X drops privileges before opening the framebuffer. Do:

   chmod 666 /dev/fb*

to fix it.

Default key map for Sun

1999-03-11 Thread Orion the Hunter
Hi,

I've noticed the following problem when using the console: the shift+alt
combination doesn't work. I've traced it to the following line in
/etc/def/default.map:

keymaps 0-2,4-5,8,12

My Debian/i386 system has

keymaps 0-15

The combination shift+alt would correspond to number 9, which is not
listed in the first line. Also, the definitions for alt+percent,
alt+asciicircum (how's that for a name?), etc are not there. I can
probably patch the mapping using the Debian/i386 as a guide, but I'm
curious to know why this is so. Compatibility with older Sun's?

Thanks in advance,

X only works for root

This problem has come up here several times already. The solution seems
to be either

(1) change the permissions of /dev/fbX (but does this have any other
consequences? why are the permissions "wrong" to start with? should one
make all of these files writable, or just /dev/fb0?), or

(2) use xdm

Is there an FAQ file yet where we can put this information? I bet this
question will be appearing here again and again and again ...

This happened to me too. The problem seems to be with some
device file permissions. The following solved the problem for me:

chmod a+r /dev/fb0

You have to run it as root. Regards,

I don't believe so, I just installed slink on a SparcStation IPC (just for
proof-of-principle) with a 200MB disk (50MB for swap), but I didn't install
gcc, or netscape. I have X installed, though.

My one partition looks like this:

Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/sda1 147129 10396635566 75% /

This brings me to a question I wanted to ask the group.

I can start X as root w/o problems, but as a user, it says:

(using VT number 7)

Warning: The directory "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/" does not exist.
 Entry deleted from font path.
Warning: The directory "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/" does not exist.
 Entry deleted from font path.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Up until the "Fatal server error:" is the same as I get starting as root, so
it's not the lack of fonts that's killing me. The fact that it works as root
makes me think it's a permissions problem, but all the same files are suid and
sgid here as on my intel.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

It should be possible with some care. I have installed slink on a IPC
with 200 MB hard disk including swap. I have X, gcc togerther with
system and X headers (and of course basic stuff and run time
libraries) but no g++ and netscape. All of them takes 109 MB.

Hi, would it be possible to install slink on a sparc10 which only
has about 150MB of space? I mean install the X window system and gcc,g++
plus netscape and all associated libraries?

iraf

1999-03-11 Thread shashi
Hi, on my sparcstation 10 which has slink on it, Ive set
/etc/apt/sources.list to point to

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

and run apt-get update.

If I type

apt-get install iraf

it says package has no installation candidate and similarly if I use
dselect to do this no iraf is obtained. If I do the same on the i386
architecture, I do find iraf and everything is fine. Does this
mean this package has not been ported to debian-sparc 2.1?

Also, I got netscape for debian-sparc from ftp.netscape.com and installed
it on this sparc10. When I type netscape I get

netscape: error in loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.2.8: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

What package should I install to get this working?

I've complained about this before!

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-sparc

contains old versions!

Can it be changed to a link to

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/slink/main/disks-sparc

before more people are lead astray, please?
