I'm trying to boot from floppy by typing boot floppy (at the new style
prompt) or b floppy (at the old style prompt). In both cases I get the
same error message.

As you request, here you have a couple of lines before the SILO line:

ok boot floppy
Boot device: /fd File and args:
SILO
Fatal eror: Cannot read partition

--- or ---

Are you trying to boot from floppy or hard drive? Did you type "boot
floppy" at the PROM prompt? Can you include a couple of the lines

The 0setserial script seems to include the lines:

${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/ttyS0 irq 4 port 0x3F8 skip_test autoconfig \
${STD_FLAGS}
and
${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/ttyS1 irq 3 port 0x2F8 skip_test autoconfig \
${STD_FLAGS}

which probably don't work too well on machines which assign the serial
ports IRQ 12 and addresses 0xffeeb004 and 0xffeeb000. IRQ 3 is, moreover,
already assigned to the SCSI bus. Shouldn't be hard to fix :-)

I am subscribed, but I would prefer for efficiency that any request to
change the release notes or the installation manual (for sparc, or
otherwise) is sent to or filed as a bug
against boot-floppies.

Excellent.

I'd be happy to add this stuff to the release notes, but I need more
information. Or I'd also be even happier just to point to Jules' area
on the web site. Guidance, please!

sd> The /dev/mouse link has to be created: "ln -sf sunmouse

Should this be added to the release notes? Errata? Enrique (the
boot-floppies maintainer) thinks it's a xserver-xsun bug, btw (bug
submitted by me just today).

Same goes for the rest of the info Steve very helpfully summarized.

You'd need an NFS server for the Win95 box. To boot from that you'd
need a TFTP server and BOOTP or RARP, which seems unlikely for Win95.

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly. Either a bad sparc
interaction or a bad kernel 2.2.x interaction. I'll ask if anyone on
the Debian sparc list shed more light.

I got the same problem. It is about a week before the release of slink
(9 Mars) and I haven't check if there is a new nis package since then.
ypbind just hangs. This happens when trying to instsll the package and
also when launching ypbind by hand.

I've seen that too, with non "sun-compatible" SCSI CDROM,
(well I'm using a PowerLite laptop..said it was full sun compatible...)
I tried 4 differents CDROM :

- Sun CDROM (2 x) : recognized as a Sony one...no problem
- HP CDROM (2 x) : recognized as a TOSHIBA model...doesn't work properly ( scsi
bus reset ...)
- Sony CDROM (32 x) : no problem
- Panasonic CD-R (4 x) : same as HP

As far as I remember, I've seen the same problem while installing Solaris (
That was 2 years ago)
that's why I supposed it was a Sun problem.

Hope this help,
maxime.

There is no xserver-configure for the xserver-xsun line AFAIK. There
is no configuration required on the systems supported by those
servers.

The default X servers for other sparc machines (such as my matrox64)
assume that /dev/mouse is valid. I don't see why it shouldn't be.
It is valid for x86, right?

Correct, not a boot-floppies bug. I say at least a normal bug. Sparc
is important as x86 (or should be). I'll make sure the bug is

Hi,

now that the Sparc port is a released, supported version of Debian, we need
people to recompile the stuff that lands in proposed-updates (security
updates, etc.) We'd need people who read their mail often and have access
to a machine running Debian/Sparc, as the turnaround time is important,
especially for security-related updates.

Can you please send addresses our way? And for recompiling, please start
