sparc32 vfork has been broken until very recently. It should be fixed

That card ain't that nice either: it ONLY supports 24bit visuals and any program
that only supports 8bit (aka pallet) pseudocolor (?) doesn't work :(

It was working fine for me (except that I couldn't get 24bits color :)
Anyway... it had some crashes from time to time... I hope they disappear
now with Xsun... I'll let you know...

Done! Xsun24 was taking 5436kb and Xsun takes 3648 right now... not
sure if it depends on the load it has (although I'm runing nearly the same

I'll have to warn you, though... I have an SS20 in front of me
at work right now (my desktop machine here), and I have it
dual-headed with a Turbo GX and an SX (the SX in 24-bit mode).

The SX is so slow in 24-bit mode than I wouldn't (and don't)
run anything more than Netscape and dtmail on it. This is
permormance in Solaris BTW... I haven't tried Linux on this
machine (nor do I think I will ever get a chance to)... and
I wouldn't expect Linux's performance to be any better with
it. If you don't mind slow (like cg3 slow) 24-bit graphics,
then go for it.

One other thing... I can't seem to find it now (maybe it's
been fixed/updated), but I remember seeing somewhere that
the cg14 (SX) was supported "in CG3 mode", or something like
that... which may mean an expensive and slow 8-bit card if
this is so...

It's not an issue. I just mean that xterm eventually needs to be
patched and recompiled for all platforms. (I've pretty much given up
hope on X. It seems that Branden may have gone back to working on
3.3.2.3.)

This isn't the problem. modprobe is locking up. Whenever a module is
autoloaded, the system locks up. The last thing modprobe does is:

  SYS_66(

Which should be a 'vfork()'. I'm not entirely sure what is going
wrong here. In the kernel vfork calls exactly the same code as fork
(although the entry code is different in sparc64). I would suspect a
kernel problem, but the older version of libc works.

Re: 24bits and colors

I had to look no further than the two characters "GX"... you
have a CG6, which is accerelated 8-bit framebuffer, not capable
of doing 24-bit graphics.

Finding a 24-bit framebuffer that'll work with Linux and
Solaris would be a chore. I personally also have a CG6,
though a Turbo GX, which is a bit faster (I've not done
any benchmarks). I also have a CG3 (slow 8-bit which is
sitting around collecting dust because it was too slow).

My advice? Live with it (still a decent framebuffer), and
run netscape with the "-install" command-line option to give
it it's own colormap...

Hmm... well I don't have the autodetect or user devices

Perhaps 664 is more appropriate... I'll try it when I get

Heheh... yeah, I've always sort of liked booting to the console.
Also, I think the 128x54 you get on the console of an S/Linux

I know, I've been telling people this. But there are a few apps that
manually acquire pty's instead of using the libc functions, so they
end up with oldstyle one - it works, but isn't aesthetically pleasing.

Maybe we need to get a preinst script that checks for this?

I have a better solution already, I wrote an init script that deals
with mounting devpts if the kernel supports it, or removing /dev/ptmx
if it doesn't.

Re: getting pppconfig to work right

1999-03-31 Thread Jake Griesbach
I tried to use ppp on my Sparc 1+ and was fairly disappointed at the
performance. Maybe you will want to reconsider using your Sparc box as a
ppp dialup box... The serial code in the linux kernel is somewhat less
than ideal, since any baud rates greater than 9600 baud give plenty of
kernel serial input overrun errors (even more when the box has significant
load). This is also due to the serial controllers on the Sparc 1+ being
fairly outdated. (However, I didn't have any problem running SunOS 4.1.3
at 38400 baud rates.) You may just try playing around with minicom some
before trying pppd just to see if you experience the same thing that I
did.

Good Luck,

Jake Griesbach

The exact same symptoms I have on my LX. I'm wondering if the Glibc
(for some odd reason) needs to be built on a regular sparc or if this
is just a kernel issue. I used the sparc kernel headers and the latest
egcs from potato, but built it on my Ultra since building it killed my
LX at the same point in the build everytime with an instant reboot.

Can you try this new patch I have (sparc32-chown.dpatch) and build on
the sparc 20? I've tries building this against 2.2.5 headers from vger
cvs and still had the same problems, so this is either not a kernel
issue or it's one that isn't fixed.

That's interesting, given that /dev/fb* were all mode 664 root/root for me
already. Is your /usr/X11R6/bin/X setuid root? (Not the X server itself,
but the wrapper therefor.)

I use xdm instead of startx, though.

Hmm... I see no mention of them in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt, and even then
my devices seem to be correct:

[2:43am] sparcy:~> ls -l /dev/f*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 0 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 32 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 64 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 96 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 128 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb4
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 160 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb5
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 192 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb6
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 29, 224 Feb 20 15:36 /dev/fb7
brw-rw 1 root floppy 2, 0 Feb 20 15:21 /dev/fd0
brw-rw 1 root floppy 2, 1 Feb 20 15:21 /dev/fd1
crw--w--w- 1 root root 1, 7 Feb 20 15:21 /dev/full

This is after I ran "chmod 666 /dev/fd?" of course... and
/dev/fb7 is listed to be minor 240 even though 224 looks right
to me. Whatever, not like I'm gonna touch it. :) I did
nothing else special (besides the link to /dev/mouse).

Don't know what to say other than "it worked for me". I'm
new to Debian and new to Linux on a Sparc (but not new to
Linux or Sparcs), and figured I'd share what worked for me...
... good luck... :)

MAKEDEV isn't work well...

You must make also /dev/fb[01]autodetect and
/dev/fd[01]user[0-7]. And set right permission.

Hi, I've installed slink-sparc to SS20 yesterday.
I've got same problem. It must link to /dev/sunmouse.
and needs to mknod some frame buffer devices.
Kernel documents(devices.txt ...) are good guide.

Yeah, as root, you have to "ln -s /dev/sunmouse /dev/mouse".

Also, I wasn't able to run X as a non-root users until I ran
"chmod 666 /dev/fb?" as root as well, and you may have to do
the same. Took me a while to figure this one out, along
with the fact that strace would segfault when I'd try to run
"strace startx" either as myself or root.

Good luck. :)

Just braving the world of X11 with the Sparc but it doesn't want to find
/dev/mouse - is this meant to be a symlink to elsewhere?

Cheers,

I know, I've been telling people this. But there are a few apps that
manually acquire pty's instead of using the libc functions, so they
end up with oldstyle one - it works, but isn't aesthetically pleasing.

My SS20 seems to have locked up. (After I installed the deb's I cd'd
to /proc/openprom and typed "ls".) This may just be a kernel issue,
I'll have to wait till I get to work to find out what's wrong. (Ping
works, tcp connections are established, but nothing comes back.)

Glibc 2.1 has a problem with having the /dev/ptmx device present and
devpts not being mounted. If /dev/ptmx is presend then create /dev/pts
and mount devpts there or it wont work right.

Do you have a non Ultra system to test this on? My ultra works fine,
but my LX doesn't reboot (as reported by some one else aswell).

I've installed this on an Ultra5. Seems to work fine. Survived a
reboot. Some minor problems that need to be fixed in other apps
(xterms end up using ttyp? instead of pts/?). BTW, the pts stuff is
enabled for sparc in the 2.2.5 kernel.

On the plus side - ssh works on the sparc with glibc 2.1.1-0.1.1 but
not on the x86 with glibc 2.1.1-0.1 (SIGPIPE) - go figure.
