I would say the 2.2.12 kernel since 2.2.11 saw a huge sparc sync. As far as
compilers
I would suggest the gcc-2.95.1 for the sparc32 compiler. Right now egcs64 does
good
for sparc64 kernels, but some parts (notably qlogic and 3c* drivers) don't
compile,
and possible other parts as well.

I am working on rolling out 64bit support in our default gcc-2.95.1 compiler
(default
to -m32, but able to accept -m64). So far I have not had problems running a
kernel
(2.2.12 and 2.3.15) compiled with this on sparc64.

Hope to give you more info tonight, I am right in the middle of setting up this
gcc
build for the 64bit support.

which 2.2 kernel for sparc ?

1999-08-30 Thread Eric Delaunay

Hello,

I'm starting to work on a new set of bootdisks for one of the next 2.1
subrelease. Since the 2.2.9 kernel built in potato are not usable for
installation software (heavily required features left out of the kernel itself,
like iso9660 support, ...), I want to build a new one.
Could I go with 2.2.12 or do I need to stick to a previous one ?

Moreover, which compiler should I use to build both sparc32 & sparc64 kernels ?
slink or potato ?

Thanks in advance.

All future APT versions will be compiled without pthreads for the
forseeable future. At least untill someone fixes this rather serious flaw.

This is a known issue with apt-cache on sun4c systems. The apt author has
compiled
a version without pthreads and it seems to have fixed the problem. I might just
make
an NMU for this so we can resolve this problem until a permanent fix is produced
(which is a pthread problem).

Check out the release notes for 2.2.11 and 2.2.12 at
http://www.linux.org.uk/

Note the comment about GCC, and the comment about floating point
on the Alpha ...

No, the RAID update didn't go into 2.2.12 after all. It was in
some of the pre-releases.

You'd have to find out how serious the floating point bugs
for the Alpha in 2.2.12 are ..

Get APT 0.3.11.1 compiled for sparc at http://www.debian.org/~jgg - it
should fix these problems.

apt-cache hang! on IPX

1999-08-30 Thread Chanop Silpa-Anan
Hi,

I'm running slink on IPX. I just upgrade apt to apt in slink-proposed-updates.
After that apt acts weird. apt-cache will stay forever. I've read some
discussion about apt on IPC weeks ago. But here apt-get ?? work fine except
upgrade which I think it call apt-cache.

On the other hand, I have another slink on sparcstation 4. With same apt
package, it doesn't have this problem.

This is not a srange one because many people around here, running IPC, IPX,
classic, have this problems. Also if I start X like

X -indirect otherhost.

I can't swith to virtual terminal either.

BTW, I'm running slink with Xsun 8bit.

PS this also happen to RH6 sparc too.
