Serial PCI ports
I am trying to install debian on a SUN CP1500 board. It contains an UltraSPARC-IIi 270MHz. The ethernet and the serial ports are exported via the PCI backplane. We have an hw adapter board connected providing an interface towards the ports. Ethernet works fine and the installation system starts ( network boot ). But something seems to go wrong in the port setup process because the system keeps going Bummer, can't open /dev/tty4 every few seconds. Anyway, I have been able to go through the whole installation process, even though the error messages thrashes the output ;-) When I start my installed system, no serial devices are working. Is there something I can do in the install shell to fix this problem? 2 logs below... /Thomas Lange/ --- From HD boot: - SILO boot: Uncompressing image... | Remapping the kernel... done. Just did an apt-get update;apt-get upgrade on an Ultra1 from frozen. Havn't done one in about two weeks and some thirty packages were updated. Re: potato install on AX and AXi
Are the AX/AXi like the AXe (ps2 system)? Yep. They support both ps2 and sun keyboards. I assume this is with a Xsun. I think I have a solution to make the Xsun server try /dev/gpmdata initially before trying /dev/mouse. This will assume that you have -Rraw enabled on gpm which works for my Mach64 Ultra 5 (ps2 mouse though). I'll test that when I get home. binfmt_elf.o is actually 64bit userland support, which doesn't really work on 2.2.x anyway. The reason I did not compile it into the kernel is that it acts as more of a DoS (running 64bit programs) than anything useful :) binfmt_elf32 is compiled in obviously. Ahh of course. Just so long as kmod doesn't insert it automatically :) One more thing... why does setserial do stuff during bootup? Anton

Jason Pock wrote: Uh...ah... I don't know whether there is a bootable image, but... Does it have a floppy drive? If so, you can boot -floppy, and install from CD, for sure. That sounds good...but how do I make a bootable floppy? I'm kind of new at this UNIX stuff, sorry. Are you familiar with ftp, cd, get? If not, you may want^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hought to use the links in the Installation Instructions pages at www.debian.org. Even if you're familiar with ftp through the Microsoft ftp client, I'm guessing that perusal of those pages would be good for you. In fact, review of those pages myself show that there is a bootable CD image. Have you obtained such a CD? In that case, just boot -cdrom at the ok prompt. The image for the boot floppy, a.k.a. the rescue disk, can be ftp'ed from ftp.debian.org /debian/dists/frozen/main/disks-sparc/current/sun4u/images-1.44/resc1440.bin. also get drivers.tgz in the same directory. Well, don't tell any of my LAN administrators, but, if you know one of the addresses served up by DHCP, one not in use at the time -check by ping'ing the address- preferably, one that has a low chance of being leased out anytime really soon, like one you know was just used by something now shut down, or if you know the IP of something you can temporarily disconnect for a short time, you use that IP address until you get dhclient, or equivalent, installed. I have a DSL modem - that's what my DHCP thing is. Can I really borrow one from that? Could I just put something like 1.0.0.5 in as the IP address? Hmmm. I didn't expect this (an example of what happens when one bends the rules ;-). I'm not an expert on DSL connections, not (yet) having one myself, but I'm more familiar with the users of those being given a static IP address range by the ISP, typically 16 IPs. In this case, is the DSL modem external, and actually your DHCP server, as well as your router? In that case, you are your own LAN admin, and can borrow at will any of the IPs in the range given to you. Or are you oppressed by having dynamic addresses assigned by your ISP at connection time? (I find it hard to believe this is the case, and if so, you probably ought to renegotiate with your ISP, since DSL is/can be always on, and you should be able to host your own DNS server, as well as other services.) Thanks a ton for your help!! Oh, glad to help. Sorry for being so slow with it.
Re: potato install on AX and AXi
One more thing... why does setserial do stuff during bootup? I have no idea, I have worked my ass off trying to get rid of setserial being installed on sparc's period.
