The sparclinux builds appear on ftp.mozilla.org fairly soon after a release.
Im even compiling them on a debian machine now :)

install kernel-package and read the docs under
/usr/share/doc/kernel-package

it is the easiest way to compile a kernel (although kernel-package doesn't
help with the kernel configuration part of the kernel compilation, you
still have to do that yourself). AFAIK SMP works fine on sparcs.

sparc-utils is a small set of programs which you will rarely need, but it
has prtconf if you miss it from Solaris. It is small enough (155k), so you
can affort to keep it around in case you need it someday...

bin86 is an 386 assembler which is used by, for instance, the kernel
compilation, to, for instance, create 16-bit bootsectors. Sparc doesn't
have a replacement because it doesn't need one. Kernel compilation on
sparcs generates a vmlinux file which is an elf executable which is loaded
directly to memory by silo (i guess). If you really want to, you can
gzip it (and call it vmlinuz if you are so inclined :-) and silo won't
complain. But unless you are producing a floppy or are really space
impaired, the only visible effect is to slow down the boot process :-)

which brings me back to kernel compilation: don't try to 'make zImage' or
'make bzImage'. A simple 'make' is sufficient and will generate
vmlinux. But you don't need to worry about those mundane details if you
use kernel-package.

You will, of course, need binutils for kernel compilation.

No need to CC to me (or the list) anymore - I am subscribed now.

I am just Debianing for about 2 days now, but I really started liking
it. I am still a little confused about dselect, but "apt-get install"
works fine - and even if I have to figure out many things that are
different from my good old SuSE it is going to be "learning-fun"
BTW - if you have any short RTFM-Links on how to do a new kernel on
debian/sparc (as I found a SparcStation20 with two processors on campus
(- is smp supported for sparcs?)) send them by PM... ;)

On the mozilla.org site, you'll find the M17 binaries for Linux sparc,
ready to download on a tar.gz... They've been there for quite some time.
No .deb package, though. But it works quite well (albeit slow).

There was a bug in the source that prevented proper building on sparc.
That's been resolved now, so expect m17 to be in woody RSN.

I've been running it for a day or so now, and it works really well :)

You've gotten a copy of the bad ISO. You need the new 2.2_rev0_CDa images,
or use one of the other boot methods (netboot, tftp).

The CD is fine for other than booting.

ooops !
Sorry for that question, I forgot to update the modules config !
Thanks for the tip anyway !

Does someone know if Netscape will appear on potato for sparc one day.
Mozilla crashes very often on my machine and I don't know if it is possible
to use the M17 on 'woody' distribution.
I tried to compile it from the sources but the linker crashes (bug ?).

Anyway lynx is so efficient.

How must I compile a new kernel on DEBIAN/SPARC?

2000-08-29 Thread Iggi
Hello SPARC friends,

what is the normal approach to compile a new kernel on my U10? I am a little
bit confused according the right order of doing things. What I have done so
far doesn't seem to work as I would like to. :-(( Here is what I have done
so far:

- Installed the kernel sources 2.2.17pre6-1 (placed in
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.17)
- Installed the kernel headers 2.2.17-sparc (placed in
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.2.17-sparc)
(Q: Do I have to create a link from the headers into the source, or copy
them into the source
folder? What about the generate-asm.sh script inside the headers folder?)
- Installed the egcs64 package.
- Used config xconfig and make-kpkg to configure and build a new package.

So I configured, saved and built a new kernel, but the the modules for
"video for linux" and "bttv" are not installed in /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc,
else I selected them to be build.

My other question is, how can I include the isdn support to be build also as
a module? Specially the HiSax driver for my PCI based ISDN card? I have no
selection on xconfig or menuconfig to select any ISDN support (as I can do
on PC).

Thx and bye
