Hello,

I'm experiencing problems with the icons and windows decorations of
window manager. It's not quite that they seem 8-bit color, but just
all wrong colors. I'm sending the paper clip icon as an attachement.
The contents of every window show the correct colors.

I haven't installed other window managers yet. Once I figure how to
do it I'll post more. Thanks

boot-floppies 2.2.17:

  base-config_0.33_i386.deb
  debconf-tiny_0.2.80.17_all.deb
  libc6_2.1.3-13_i386.deb
  locales_2.1.3-13_i386.deb
  makedev_2.3.1-46_all.deb
  task-x-window-system-core_1.2_i386.deb

Porters, please try to replicate this list.

Porters, is anyone working on boot-floppies 2.2.17 for non-i386 ?

I have a sun4 machine running 2.2. There is currently no bootloader so it
netboots the kernel. You will have to install the OS on another machine
because there are currently no boot images with sun4 support.

what is the support in the kernel for sun4 at this moment? I ask because
I have gotten hold of a SPARCserver 330. Is there anyone I should

Hi Jeremy,

I'm running RedHat 6.2 on my Ultra 10, and there was a native SPARC version of
Netscape
communicator in the distribution. It is version 4.51.

You should be able to go to RedHat's FTP site (or any of its mirrors that
support SPARC),
and download the RPMs. If you can't find them, let me know, and I'll see if I
can grab
them off of the CD for you.

Also, here's the relevant portion of my XF86Config, that seems to work just
fine:

# To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.
#XkbDisable
# To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the
# lines below (which are the defaults). For example, for a non-U.S.
# keyboard, you will probably want to use:
#XkbModel"pc102"
# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
#XkbModel"microsoft"
#
# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
#XkbLayout "de"
# or:
#XkbLayout "de"
#XkbVariant "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#XkbOptions "ctrl:nocaps"
XkbRules"sun"
XkbModel"type5_unix"
XkbLayout "us"
EndSection

It's fairly straightforward to get the needed netscape packages from slink.
However, if you have an Ultra, I suggest trying Mozilla (=>M17).
The available Netscape 4.51 is really flaky on sparc, but mozilla is too
heavy for our SS5. (therefore I use w3m or links...)

I have seen memory leakage in atleast netscape, up to 60 megs sometimes. I
usually don't ever run it more than a day at a time.

SILO boot problems

2000-10-05 Thread Gabor Zoltan Csejtey
I configured SILO for two images. When I boot The SILO starts but
after it stops and looks for the following file:

/platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/unix

which is in the boot-file setting. It's fine for Solaris and for Linux
I made a symlink to the /vmlinuz and it started then. But I
cannot use the SILO to choose a different image to start.

The other option is the remove the symbolic link and use SILO and
live together with this small stop error.

Is there a solution for this problem?

Gabor
PS.
I can use STOP-A to stop the boot process and choose a different disk
and image file of course.

My configuration:
I have two disks, one for Solaris(disk0) the other for Linux(disk1)

My silo.conf

You're correct... he clarified this for me in private email... an
xdpyinfo showed that applications are indeed showing up 16-bit and
that it was windowmaker's icons (and other wm stuff) showing up as
8-bit... but that could be explained by windowmaker only having
8-bit graphical icons (which I'm not sure if this is the case).

So things work, but there's a piece that's not fully explained yet.

This way I see no reason why the display would be limited to 8bpp.

Definitely.

Low-end sparcs like IPCs, IPXs, etc., are capable to display only 8-bit
graphics. You should use a wm with low color allocation requirements.
For example, I use Icewm on my machines, and I'm very satisfied with it.
It does not usually show color swapping when I jump from one X application
to another, and it is also quite fast.
Also fvwm works great on IPC/IPXs.

Avoid Afterstep or similar window managers: they are color-hungry.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I've yet to see these happening on the SS5 here, but on my personal
i386 machine with 2.2.17 it's happened twice. My guess is this
is prolly related to this kernel. (never happened with .14 or .15)

Try downgrading to .16 or going up to .18prex
