Different PCI chipset. You basically have either PSYCHO, which has 32K
entries in IOMMU TSB, or SABRA, which has either 8K, 16K or 32K (depending
on which box this is). You can either set 8K or 64K granularity in this
translation table. 2.2.x uses 64K and sets 1:1 mapping of all memory in this
table, which means you can have at most 2GB (resp. 1GB resp. .5GB) of OS
usable memory. 2.4.x does dynamic DMA mapping (so this is history).

That's strange. We have an Ultra60 with 1.5 gigs running under 2.2.17-pre20
with no problems. Why the difference?

2000-12-15 Thread Jonathan D. Proulx
Hi,

just trying to get my first Debian Sparc install done on a
Sparcstation20, but it won't boot from disk, and it has no floppy.

I got it up with the install CD (freshly burned from my rdist
collection) and chrooted to /target and installed man-db so I could
man silo, but I can't see what's wrong.

I know this isn't much to go on, but any ideas?

TIA,

Hmm, I found the auto partitioning method will simply create /dev/sda1 as /
(Linux Native - type 83), /dev/sda2 as Linux Swap (type 82), and /dev/sda3 as
Whole Disk and I'm unsure of the type right now. I don't particularily care for
a single root partition to hold /usr, /var, and /home... evil. I ended up
partitioning manually making /dev/sda3 first to use the Whole Disk. Then I made
/dev/sda1 as /, /dev/sda2 and Linux Swap, /dev/sda5 as /usr, /dev/sda6 as /var,
and /dev/sda7 as /home. You don't necessarily define them as /, /usr, /var, and
/home at this point... that's done when you Initialize the partitions... after
partitioning. Hopefully someday someone will file a wish-list bug report to
have a more robust auto partitioning scheme. Good luck.

Hi,
I'm trying to install Debian/potato on my Sparcstation 5 / 110 mhz,
I' not very successful, I'm having troubles to get the partition
working ( i had it working erlier but then when I rebooted for the
first time started the system I got too many errors when downloading
pacages, so I was forced to restart and then I had to boot from the
CD again, just to realize that the installation process hangs and now
for the x time I realize that the partitioning wont work it gives me
error messages when I tries to partition sda2, then claimes that it
doesnt know if the /root is at sda1 or not but it so presumes, then
it wont work any more.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestion to what I may do to get it
to work again?

Which floppy drive

2000-12-15 Thread Andreas Tille
Hello,

because I'm not able to burn a Debian sparc boot CD just now I wonder
if I could insert a floppy drive into my brandnew E250 server to
install Debian from floppy.

Any hints if I could use normal PC IDE hardware?

Kind regards

  Andreas.

Hmm, than I really, really hope that 2.4 becomes stable soon!
I do note hope that I would have to stay with Solaris because Linux
doesn't support all memory. I expect to go into production after about
5 or 6 month.  Hope to get kernel 2.4.x with x >= 5 or so because I
don't trust even 2.4.[0-4].

Kind regards

Andreas.

Problem solved. I've restored the factory default (with set-default), and
instead of modifing the disk alias, i've set the boot-device to be disk1.

Now /proc/openprom in linux works and the machine boot.

I've not understood why i cannot modifiy disk alias (was a system alias?),
but now works! :)))

Most distributions available for SPARC should work (to some extent) on
an ss5/170... but don't expect stability with any of them. The issues
are with kernel support for it...

Debian On Sparc

2000-12-15 Thread
Hi all
I have a Sparc 5 Model 170 and I wish to install Linux onto it, could some
one confirm that the Debian version is a good path to go down for this
Machine.
It has been said that the Model 170 is not very good with Linux because of
it's Turbosparc chip. I would also appreciate any tips regarding this
bearing in mind
that I am new to Linux and Sparc workstations.

Thanks

Paul.

This is expected and known... your only options are to use only 512MB of
RAM with 2.2.x or to have all 1024MB with 2.4.0-testX kernel.

Getting started via serial line connection

2000-12-15 Thread Andreas Tille
Hello,

I've got my fine E250 machine, but run in trouble before thinking about
installing Debian.

There is no graphics card in the machine and I have to connect via
serial line. I found a searial cable which I used to connect a laptop
with a desktop years ago and adapted it via gender-changer and
25pin to 9 pin adapter to a Linux laptop. There I started minicom.

But after switching on the E250 server I can't see anything on my
laptop minicom terminal. Is there any document to read or any starting
help. I really don't know what is installed in the Sun and I'm
looking for a way to get the console output.

Another way would be to insert a graphics card. I've found a PC
Matrox G200 card in our shelf but don't know if it works.

Any hint how to start up with this beast is really welcome.

Kind regards

 Andreas.

Debian problem on UltraSparc

2000-12-15 Thread Tommy Wu

  1. I've 1024MB RAM on my box. But when I use kernel 2.2.18, it won't boot
correctly
except I add a append="mem=512m" to let kernel use only 512MB. Is there
any
configuration that I miss ? (I've try 2.4.0-test9 to test12, they will use
all
 1024MB RAM correctly)

  2. Does anyone use iptables on a sparc box ?
I've try to use iptables on my space box for kernel 2.4.0-test9 to test12,
but
all of them don't work. When I load the ip_conntrack, ip_tables,
iptable_nat
modules, it will display a kernel bug message in my console like:

bug: kernel timer added twice at 0110052c.

And the NAT, Filter function for iptables won't work.
The script I've used in my i386 box, it's ok and work fine.

 How to solve it ?
