Re: Problems with Driver Disks
Ok, I made the disks from those .bin's. When it asks me for the driver1 disk, i still get the same message: "This is disk 1 of 2 in the drv14-sun4cdm series of 05-Jan-2001 19:17 UTC. Wrong Disk. This is from series drv14-sun4cdm. You need disk 1 of teh driver series." is my root.bin messed up ? what's going on here ? I've been able to install debian on this box before. Problems with Driver Disks
I've been trying to install potato my Sparc 10. In the setup when it asks for the driver disks, i feed it my rescue.bin disk, it installs it fine. Then i feed it the driver-1.bin disk, which i downloaded form the /stable/, it rejects that disk saying: "This disk is from the series drv14-sun4dcm. Wrong disk. Please insert disk 1 from the driver series." I've tried downloading other disks, same thing happens. I've veryfied the disk "cmp /dev/fd0 driver-1.bin". anyone encountered the problem ? tia, Jim

Gannon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [010222 10:11]: > Got the sparc utils package, installed it, no error, but should audioctl > be an executible now? if so where was it installed and how does it work? Well, it's it's installed, you make the /dev/audioctl device (if it's not already there - "mknod audioctl c 14 7") and load the module... if it's not already loaded. Then you do a "audioctl -a" and get a long listing with entries like: play.rate=44100 play.channels=2 play.precision=16 play.encoding=linear_be play.gain=136 play.balance=32 play.port=0x1 (speaker (0x1)) play.avail_ports=0x7 (speaker (0x1)|headphone (0x2)|line out (0x4)) So then you do something like "audioctl -w play.port=3" to have it come out on both the headphone and the speaker at the same time... or "audioctl -w play.gain=150" to raise the volume, etc. Of course, if it's not installed, then just grab the source (it's tiny, just 1 C file, 1 manpage, and a Makefile)... and "do it yerself" for it.

FAQ anyone?
Hi folks, This is probably none of my business, but I would like to make an observation, and follow it with a silly question. I subscribed to debian-sparc on September 13, 2000. At the time I was having problems with my ELC. After that I had a problem with a netwatch bus error which Anton Blanchard helped me with - I haven't fixed it yet - too many distractions - don't give up on me yet Anton! Since that time, I have seen many questions visit through with lots of similar answers: - How do I boot my xxx? - My xxx doesn't boot with silo! - How do I make X work on my xxx? - My mouse doesn't work on my xxx? - How do I cross-compile for my xxx? - How do I make audio work on my xxx? These questions are written off-the-top of my head. I subscribe to 20-odd mailing lists (probably more :-(, so these questions came past often enough to be burnt into my cortex. (There are 1161 messages in my Debian-Sparc mailbox) I haven't seen anyone ask for a FAQ, or point anyone to an FAQ, or even the archives, or other cool resources. Sooo, here's the silly question(s): Is there a sparc-debian FAQ, where is it and why doesn't its URL get posted here on a regular basis? Before you respond: "Hey Onno, feel like maintaining a FAQ?" realise that I use i386 Debian everywhere and that I have a little ELC sitting spare in the corner that I thought would be cool if it also ran my favorite OS. (I also dabbled in PPC Debian, but that's a story for a rainy day.) The ELC is turned off, has no drives at the moment and hasn't booted for at least four months - eg. Debian Sparc is not an active project for me, but I figure that since Anton helped me, I should at least attempt to listen and even offer assistance if I can - so far, I think I understand some of the questions :-) If you are offering to provide me with content and need someone to make it look like English... tempt me. PS. You may well be one of the people who answers lots of questions - (thanks Ben, Joshua and Gabor) - I am not intending to insult your amazing efforts. I just wonder if you could get more cool stuff done if there was a FAQ. Not that it's any of my business how you spend your time, but I hope you get what I mean.
