if its md5sum (minus its first two lines) matches the one in a list of
md5sums of previous Debian releases. This will reduce dpkg prompting
 on upgrades (Closes: #71083).

   * New upstream source
 - fetchmail now has a fallback MDA strategy for when it cannot connect

procmail just because of fetchmail, we use /usr/sbin/sendmail as the
fallback strategy (works with exim, sendmail and postfix. Other MTAs
   not tested)
   * Patched to allow user to choose fallback strategy
   * New conffile for initscript, /etc/default/fetchmail. This allows for
a default --daemon and --syslog behaviour, but will get in the way of
the clueful people who did the right thing and used set daemon and
set syslog in /etc/fetchmailrc (closes: #89343)

Changes:
 licq (1.0.3-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version, despite the fact that it has yet to be announced
 on the main web page.
   * The README for the console plugin no longer makes reference to its own
version number. The Debian patch that updated that version number has
 been removed.
   * The plugins now depend on an unversioned licq | licq-ssl, in
preparation for separate licq-ssl packaging. I have the nasty feeling
that removing the version from the dependency is going to come back to
bite me in the ass, but no simple method for handling an
=source-version type dependency that won't force licq-ssl to strictly
match every single release that I make comes to mind...

XServer Sun24 keeps crashing (Creator3D)

2001-03-13 Thread Peter Becker

Hello,

has anybody else experienced XServer crashes with the 24bit Sun XServer
from Potato on a Ultra10 Creator 3D? I have a lot of reproducable
crashes in KDE plus running Acroread remotely. The window is at least
partly visible but then the server is gone.

One way to get this is:
 ssh -X otherMachine
 acroread

and that's it. If the user never started Acrobat Reader before it will
display the licence notice but after the main window is displayed (even
with PDF if given from command line) the server will vanish without any
comment (at least I wasn't able to find it).

The same applies for a local KDE installation. A bunch of programs
crashes like the filemanager, the control center and some of the smaller
apps.

Any idea what goes wrong? Any idea how to fix/workaround it?

Thanks,
  Peter

2001-03-13 Thread Gabor Zoltan Csejtey
Hi,

If you look at the archive around dec. 12 you'll find some discussion
about gpm and xsun24. gpm won't propably work together with xsun. I
tried to use them separately i.e. you're running X then you don't have
gpm or stop X and you can use gpm from the virtual console.
Therefore I installed the xserver-xfree86 4.0 package but I can't use
the virtual console after I started X. The colors under console go
wild e.g. light green, yellow etc.

iBCS

2001-03-13 Thread lars . johansson
Hello!
I'm trying to compile iBCS for kernel v2.2.18 on a sparc32.
My aim is to get SunOS/Solaris emulation to work.
As I understand, the built in emulation only works on sparc64.
(I tried, but it get segfaults. I have the SunOS/Solaris binaries)
My problem is; iBCS build scripts doesn't seem to do verry much. They
definitely does not install any modules anywhere.
I have supplied the kernel source tree, with a just used configuration
(the kernel works allright).
My questions are; does it requier extra magic?
Should the SunOS binary emulation option be on or off when compileing
the kernel? (I had it on)

Thanx!

A few, but you don't need kernel 2.4.x to run woody.

2.4.2-ac18 would not compile on sparc/woody . Do other

Abstraction (Was: Re: Potato-Woody)

2001-03-13 Thread Onno Benschop

Ok, ok, I'll bite.

In order to further my understanding of my place in the world (that is, ask
silly questions, see what happens), I feel the need to ask this (from
blissful ignorance, so be gentle).

Let us imagine an operating system that is built from a whole lot of
different modules that all talk to each other. Sounds a little like Linux -
no? So someone comes along and invents a new file system. The developer
community says Cool and life moves on.

The question is coming, be patient :-)

So in the scheme of things, some bright spark wrote the bit that speaks to
the disk drive - known as a driver. This person's goal in life is to make
their little driver be the fastest, bestest, smartest, tiniest piece of
code you can imagine. This is what they do in life, this is why they get
out of bed - you get the picture. Their driver takes all the hassle out of
writing bits to disk.

Question just over the horizon...

Then the inventor of the new file system just writes their little module,
so it talks to the disk-driver. So when someone else comes along and writes
a disk-driver for their blue-spangled-magneto-laser-disk thingy, the new
file system still talks to a disk-driver, and it all still works.

So, then someone asks, how come reiserfs doesn't work on sparc.

I wonder what am I missing?

This is what's known as bad, non-portable coding. You see, on different
architectures, things are, well, different. We have big and little
endians, and we have 32bit and 64bit. When you code something, and don't
have the foresight to work with these nuances, you get problems down the
road.

You see, someone thought it would be easier to just get it working,
sort out the portability later than to think now, do it right, and save
mind later. Of course, Linus once said that Linux would never work on
anything other than i386 too :)
