It should return almost immediately. Can you show the partition table

Clarification -- the ps -ax command worked -- now I am back to my original
question -- How long do I wait with the cursor flashing for this thing to
finish initalizing the swap partition? It has been about an hour, so it may
be just a bit of impatience on my part.

Additional info:
Linux native partition starts at sector 0
Linux swap has a -q flag on it (?)
whole disk is only other partition

Am able to 'ls' and look at read-only file system, though I haven't tried to
move around in it.

probe-scsi returned normal -- as far as I can tell (and that is'nt a very
long trip) all of the settings are correct.

ok - worked after reboot
1init
2[kflushed]
3[kupdate]
4[kpoid]
5[kswapd]
29/sbin/syslogd -K -m 0
35/usr/bin/tail -f /proc/kmsg

37/bin/sh
38/sbin/dbootstrap
39 ps ax

All uid's were /root, and State was S excepting the 'ps ax' call - R.

Here is an interesting thing -- I jumped through the keyboad setup, and the
operation returned "sun:operation not allowed"

Initiated swap init checked processes

62sh -c mkswap -v1 /dev/sda2
63mkswap -v1 /dev/sda2

I assume you mean F2? You should switch to console 2 (ALT+F2), and hit
return, which will give you a shell prompt. Try doing a "ps ax" to see
the process list.

Re: (newbie) Installation interruption or impatience

2001-08-18 Thread C. Ridout
So sorry -- I realized that more info was required, but didn't want to clog
the works.

It's a Sparc IPC w/ 48 meg memory (32 ram /16 rom), 1.3 gig scsi hdd, cdrom,
tape backup . . . I'm installing from the cdrom from disks I purchased from
Debian after I had the same prob w/ floppies I made from the free disk
images at Debian -- figured it was a media prob.

I checked the log. Other than the timestamp (and therefore the system time)
being about 8 hours ahead, nothing seems to have happened.

There are two lines:

aug 18 16:05:40 (none) Syslogd Started: BusyBox v0.43
(2000.08.03-15:11*)

aug 18 16:08:22 (none) user.info dbootstrap[38]:
__

I am able to use F3 to access the shell: I can 'pwd' and get root, and I
'ls' and get 'I/O error' -- beyond that, I am unsure what to do here

Thanks for your quick response. I am interested in your interpretation.

What type of system? Note, you can switch to the other consoles to see
what is going on. Use ALT+F3 to see the log console, and you can switch
to ALT+F2 for a shell.

Try to see what's going on during this freeze.

I have read that 'a chicken' could install this
thing.

I have hit "Initialize a Swap Partition" and begun
the process -- no scan for bad sectors this time (last time, I stop-a'd the
thing after 30+ hours of scan for bad sectors).  How long do I stare at the
flashing cursor before punting.

Ahemm, how would I do that? Simply only taking the first 90 % of the file?

The box only has 16 MB RAM, but that should be sufficient, shouldn´t it?

2001-08-18 Thread Robert Waldner

Hi!

I finally got round to try installing debian on my (tnx, az) SS1, but
 it fails to boot correctly.

It seems to load tftpboot.img via TFTP correctly, but as soon as
getting the file is finished, it bombs out with "Data Access Exception".

I tried both Ben Collins images and the stable one.

Any ideas/suggestions/flames/FM´s?

I was about to suggest the same. I have an Ultra 1 at home with Debian

with no problems at all.

Can you try installing from CD ?
