Re: help needed booting Ultra-5

2001-10-25 Thread keith
Hi Paul:

The CD's in Ultra-5's cannot read CD-RW media. However, they
can read CD-R's just fine, as I found out after some gnashing
of teeth.

So, burn a CD-R, and you should be in good shape -- it worked
for me.

Cheers,

Keith

help needed booting Ultra-5

2001-10-25 Thread paul cannon
I've got an "Ultra 5" Sparc machines here on which I am going
to install Debian. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make it boot
to any installation media. The installation notes for Sparc
imply that sun4u's don't support booting to the floppy, so that
would explain my failures there, but I downloaded and burned an
official 2.2_rev3 iso for sparc, and that won't boot either.
After I do 'boot cdrom' at the ok prompt, the process begins,
but the messages say:

Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
Boot device: /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],0:f File and args:
Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom

Can't open boot device

This is quite like the message displayed when I try to boot to a
sparc rescue floppy. The cd burn seems to have been successful-
I can mount it on other machines.

Is this a known problem, and I simply can't find any
documentation about it? Might something be wrong with the
hardware here, or is it likely I'm doing something stupid?

The CD in question is a CD-RW. Are Ultra-5's old enough that
they can't read those? I don't have any account on the machine
at the moment, so I've no way of trying to mount the CD under
Solaris.

module selection during installation.

2001-10-25 Thread Nath
Hello all,

 During installation 2.2r3 on an ultra10, I can't select a module to
load, it never works, as if the hardware wasn't there... It's not a
problem, as the modules are well installed after installation process
is over, but I'm just asking me if it's a known bug or if I'm the only
one getting that. The cd drive is an ide one, and the devices I want
to load modules for are physically installed.

Between, has anyone succeded in making a bt848-based tv card in a
ultra workstation with pci stuff ? I'm still trying to make xawtv
display anything else than a black square, and crashing my X server
when going in full screen mode.

Hm, I try to compile kernel 2.4.13 and the kernel from vger. Both compile
till the end, then following error is reported:

I experienced this on all kernels >2.4.2 if there was not another

Just do "boot net". The broadcast handles everything else. If you don't
see anything in the log file of the rarp server, then it isn't getting
the request. Are you sure the switch is capable of 10mbit?

No, rarpd does the name lookup, and sends the IP to the machine
requesting it. You should see requests in /var/log/daemon.log (btw, is
this running on an intel or sparc system?).

Yeah, you need to be able to send/recv broadcasts.

Should be right depending on the PROM version. You can create another
link without the ".SUN4M" extension to cover all basis.

So far, it looks like you understand everything pretty well. Get that
broadcast setup (the switch problem), and you should be good to go.

Re: SPARCstation LX boot problem

2001-10-25 Thread Corey Kovacs

Well I figured out what the problem with the switch I have was, bad cable.
Now
I can get to the outside world (and other machines on the switch itself)
so I should
be able to proceed normally.
With the setup noted in the previous message I give the openboot command
ok boot net ip.of.the.server
and I get errors indicating a timeout condition waiting for an RARP/ARP
packet. So
obviously, as you said Ben, this is not set up right, and I am probably
not issuing the
command correctly.
Also, the SPARC's don't seem to be talking ethernet. I don't get e link
light when I
enter the above command. Is that normal for these things?

The easiest way is tftp (which you can then use the CD for, so that
isn't a complete waste). It sounds like you have your rarpd setup wrong,
so let's try to get that working. What do you have in /etc/ethers?

Hi.

My Ultra1 sends out a RARP request with its MAC address and gets its IP
address by the RARP server. Than it does a tftp request with its IP
address (no DNS lookups by the client - this isn't possible at this
stage as the client only knows the IP address, but not the network
address, default gateways or DNS servers).

On the tftp server I have set up links from the image to ,
where is the client's IP address in hex, all upper case. No
.SUN4U or similar.

That works fine.

Re: SPARCstation LX boot problem

2001-10-25 Thread Corey Kovacs

Ben, thanx for the offer of help.
In my /etc/ethers I have this...
XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX machine.depauw.edu
where the X's are the hardware address of the ethernet card in the SPARC.
and machine.depauw.edu is the name associated with the ip I want to
give
it in dns.
The way I understand it is the machine gets it's name from the rarp
request
then uses dns to do a lookup and get it's ip address, is that right?
I also found out that the office switch I am using to connect the 10Mbps
SPARC's to the 100Mbps switch is not letting anything through so I
have
to look into that first since that is causing a bigger problem..
I have tftp working, I've verified that by comming in from another machine.
I'm not sure if the link to the tftpboot.img is right though. I have
it as
.SUN4M
where the X's are the IP address I've given it in hex. I am not
sure at all of the
SUN4M extension is right or not since I haven't been able to connect
directly to
the tftp server from the SPARC's to create any log entries for debugging.
So, the short of it is I'll be working on finding out why this little
switch is not
working, then back to rarp.
Any suggestions though would be great.

Corey.

It says that the CDrom is "not a block device". What does this mean?

Figuring that maybe my CD rom is problem, I watched all the startup messages

then it shows their bandwidth whereas my CD rom says its "asynchronus". Is
