serial port question Re: [debian-user] Newbie comments & queries

2001-12-04 Thread Brenda J. Butler

On a thread in the debian-user mailing list, an answer
came up regarding the serial port. It reminded me of
an unasked question I had on that topic, which should
probably be asked in debian-sparc rather than debian-user:

Mine looks like:

Sparc Zilog8530 serial driver version 1.41.2.6
tty00 at 0xffede004 (irq = 44) is a Zilog8530
tty01 at 0xffede000 (irq = 44) is a Zilog8530
tty02 at 0xffedb004 (irq = 44) is a Zilog8530
tty03 at 0xffedb000 (irq = 44) is a Zilog8530
Sun TYPE 5 keyboard detected without keyclick
pty: 256 Unix98 ptys configured

but I don't have any devices /dev/tty0[0-3]

The modem goes out /dev/ttyS0 according to wvdial.conf

Actually this is what's in my /dev directory:

seal:/var/spool/exim/input# ls -la /dev | grep "4, 6"
crw-rw-rw-1 root tty4, 60 Feb 20 1999 tty60
crw-rw-rw-1 root tty4, 61 Feb 20 1999 tty61
crw-rw-rw-1 root tty4, 62 Feb 20 1999 tty62
crw-rw-rw-1 root tty4, 63 Feb 20 1999 tty63
crw-r-1 root dialout4, 64 Dec 4 21:43 ttyS0
crw-rw1 root dialout4, 65 Jul 15 2000 ttyS1
crw-rw1 root dialout4, 66 Feb 20 1999 ttyS2
crw-rw1 root dialout4, 67 Feb 20 1999 ttyS3
seal:/var/spool/exim/input#

There are 64 tty#, with # from 0 to 63 (yes, 0, not 00).
And then there are 4 ttyS#, with # from 0 to 3, and minor
numbers continuing after the tty# series.

Why doesn't the dmesg output tty0[0-3] match the entries in
the /dev directory?

I was having a similar problem with the sun4cdm tftpboot.img. When I
used linux-a.out to boot, and used an NFS-mounted root, it books and
enters the Debian install without any problems (though you may need to
expicitly tell it to use NFS; boot net root=/dev/nfs
ip=my-ip:nfs-server works for me on my IPX).

Can someone recompile a security fix for arm and for sparc?
Neither architecture has a working rbuilder or a debian.org
machine running potato so I can't compile security fixes
for those two architectures.

Please reply to me directly and I'll tell you what to compile.

That happened to me with the high-end video card. It actually booted,
but with no display. So take it out if you are using that card. So
far, the outlook doesn't look good with that card.

This was my impression that something went really wrong inside the
kernel. UNfortunately I have neither time nor enough knowledge to
track down the problem into the necessary detail to file a reasonable
bug report. Anybody have a suggestion which package (kernel-sources
or nfs-kernel-server) would be appropriate and what information is missing
(/etc/exports, strace-log, ???)

Hmm, you suggested the option 'nfsroot' but it is not mentioned on
this manpage.

Not really but thanks anyway. At least I found somebody who shares
my frustration a little bit ;-).

Installation problem on netra t1

2001-12-04 Thread jochen005
Hello,

I am trying to install debian potato from the official CD for sparc on
a netra t1 105:

Netra t1 (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.25 ME, 1024 MB memory installed, Serial #14302846.

However, the installation program always assumes that I have screen
and keyboard on the t1. I get the following messages:

[lines omitted]
EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
init started: BusyBox v0.43 (2001.04.13-16:23+) multi-call binary
modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies file
/lib/modules/2.2.19/modules.dep(No such file or directory)
cannot create /dev/tty4: error 19
Bummer, can't open /dev/tty1

The "Bummer"-line repeats over and over. Installation can proceed
up to the reboot. After the reboot init cannot start the next
installation step and the machine hangs. I have tried different
settings of input-device and output-device in OBP, but this made
no difference. The latest boot image (Nov 14) announced by Ben worked
fine, but cannot install the potato CD.

Any hints appreciated,
JSt

This worked so far even if I wanted to try LVM :-(.

So I have to wait again for a kernel which fits my needs.

But all my hope for a working NFS vanished again.
Sorry, I'm loosing my nerves and I have to say: I HATE, I REALLY HATE
BROKEN NFS!!!
(Sorry, it was necessary to calm down and I just report my ever and ever
coming up problem once more.)

# cat /etc/exports
/ wr-linux02(rw,no_root_squash)
/var wr-linux02(rw,no_root_squash,nohide)
/usr wr-linux02(rw,no_root_squash,nohide)
# /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart
Stopping NFS kernel daemon: mountd nfsd.
Unexporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...done.
Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...wr-linux02.rki.ivbb.bund.de:/:
Invalid argument
done.
Starting NFS kernel daemon: nfsd mountd.
# grep NFS /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.16/.config
CONFIG_NFS_FS=y
CONFIG_NFS_V3=y
# CONFIG_ROOT_NFS is not set
CONFIG_NFSD=y
CONFIG_NFSD_V3=y
CONFIG_NCPFS_NFS_NS=y

I once fought hard to solve this problem on i386 plattform and now the
problem vanished there (more or less mysteriousely by moving some lines
in /etc/exports up and down), but I can not get access to the Sparc
machine via NFS since I use 2.4 kernel series. With 2.2.18 all worked
fine with the very same /etc/exports. I guess it depends from the
phase of the moon while compiling the kernel if you get a working NFS
or not.

Kind regards

Andreas - out of hope to get NFS working ...

BriteLite IPX keyboard troubles with 2.2/3.0 boot floppies

2001-12-04 Thread Lee Cremeans
I just got a RDI BriteLite IPX as surplus from work, and I've been
attempting to get Debian going on it, but I keep running into problems
with the keyboard with the install kernel. I can boot it from
rescue.bin or linux-a.out from the sun4cdm/ directory, and while it
detects the keyboard as a Sun4 without keyclick (which is correct),
none of the keys work, not even Stop-A, making it impossible to use
the install program -- I have to power-cycle to get the machine back.
I've tried both the 2.2 and 3.0 boot floppies, and they behave the
same way.

Installing the system from the serial console seems to work, but it's
not practical because I only have a Mac printer cable at the moment
(DIN-8 to DIN-8), and the lack of handshaking on the Mac side makes it
very hard to use.

Is there a magic incantation to get the system keyboard working, or
will I have better luck getting a proper cable to connect the serial
console to my (Debian-running) PC?
