Not closing the bug, as there is more to do in this area.

 - The pause after downloading is now optional. (Closes: #120873)

 - Package data moved to /var/lib. (FHS fix -- the package *ought* to
handle the transition properly) (Closes: #122334)

 - Fixed description of the comm section to show that it's not just
 faxmodems. (Closes: #121951)

Did you try the tftp boot image? It failed for me.

No. Like I wrote, we used the pre-compiled kernel from
the javastation how-to and the root.tar archive from
ftp.de.debian.com since I guessed that the kernel
included with the tftp bootimage would not work.

I just read a posting from Troy Morrison in debian.arm
that describes exactly the same problem:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, it looks like I am not the only one having problems
to install debian woody via nfs.

If the installation over nfs does not work it would
be extremly helpful if someone could create a live
snapshot of his filesystem and put it on a ftp server.

Thanks in advance,

bye lars.

  Saluti,

Thanks for the interest. I'll send out a patch file in the next day
or so. It modifies three source files:
   ffb.h
   ffb_driver.c
   ffb_dac.c
and applies to the CVS version 4.1.99.1, of about November 1. However
the three files involved are dated 2001/05/04, and I haven't seen anything
else posted which would indicate conflicting changes to the driver.

As indicated, attached source patch file puts some DPMS support into
the Sun Creator/Elite driver for XF86, release 4.1.99(.1?)-CVS.
The driver is in the Xfree source tree at (if I type all this right)
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/sunffb

In that directory, the command
patch -b sunffb-4.1.99-DPMSMode.patch
should successfully patch the files ffb.h, ffb_driver.c, ffb_dac.c;
after that just 'make' in that directory should get you a new
sunffb_drv.o (assuming you have already built everything once.)

Now, with X inactive, go to wherever your existing drivers are
(something like /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers depending on your
configuration), save the existing sunffb_drv.o, and bring in the new
one.

To play with it, make sure that the already-working-with-your-
Creator-card XF86Config file has the line
Option DPMS on
in its Monitor section, and restart X. xset q should now
report that you can use DPMS, and you can play with it. Also,
if you want, xset s on; xset s blank should now work. (If DPMS
Option is not set, the driver will not enable DPMS, but you can
change that behavior, of course.)

Also, keep in mind Jon Leonard's note I sent you. I have no way
of knowing if his remarks apply to your configuration or not.

Good luck,
Regards,
Ferris

xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/sunffb

In that directory, the command
patch -b sunffb-4.1.99-DPMSMode.patch
should successfully patch the files ffb.h, ffb_driver.c, ffb_dac.c;
after that just 'make' in that directory should get you a new
sunffb_drv.o (assuming you have already built everything once.)

Good luck,
Regards,
Ferris

Well, first of all, what do you want it to do?

Does it show up currently during boot? Take a
look at the output from 'dmesg' and see if there
is a line that makes reference to 'fd' 'fdc' or
'floppy' to be sure the kernel actually sees it.

Kaffe porting issues

2001-12-12 Thread John R. Daily
I've been doing some work to ensure kaffe's availability on the
ia64 port. 1.0.6 has yet to make it into testing, and there is
much work to be done if woody is to ship with a reasonably
up-to-date version.

I'm cc'ing the ports in question in hopes that some of these
problems can be solved by developers more familiar with those
platforms. I haven't included s390, because the failure to build
there seems to involve several missing dependencies, and I would
guess that the lack of kaffe on that platform won't affect the
package's ability to get into woody.

buildd.debian.org/build.php reports that the latest package does
not build on mips, mipsel, hppa, and sparc.

IA-64
-
I can get kaffe 1.0.6 to build on ia64 through one of two
mechanisms: using libffi to handle the arch-specific stuff, or by
using patches from Mandrake that configure ia64 correctly. (In
either case, a config.{sub, guess} update is required.)

With 1.0.6, I get a memory error when setting up the jvm; I
have yet to successfully track down the problem.

The CVS version of kaffe is much more promising. With Mandrake's
patches applied, the ia64 jvm builds and executes correctly, so
taking a CVS snapshot is attractive from the standpoint of
getting ia64 support into woody.

MIPS(EL)

On mips, the current problem with both 1.0.6 and CVS is that an
include of sigcontext.h should actually be asm/sigcontext.h; the
i386-specific headers included with kaffe properly handle this
via #ifdef, so that can be easily remedied.

The mips/CVS kaffe code, though, has another problem: mips1 and
mips2 do not support the 'movn' assembler instruction used, so
that will have to be rewritten, or the code compiled exclusively
for mips3.

HPPA

hppa is not supported at all; the only parisc configuration files
are for hpux, not linux. This may be circumventable via libffi,
or the existing hpux configuration files might be useful to
create linux ones.

SPARC
-
On sparc, struct sigcontext is defined twice, both in 1.0.6 and
CVS. This should be easy to solve.

...

Decent java support in woody seems like a reasonable goal, so any
help in resolving these issues would be appreciated, as would any
suggestions regarding kaffe 1.0.6 (1.5 years old now) vs. a
current CVS snapshot.

I'm including a table summarizing the state of affairs.

  1.0.6 1.0.6 CVS CVS
  buildexecute build execute
 ia64 w/ patch no w/ patch yes
hppa needs config n/a needs config n/a
mips(el) patch unknown patch, needs assembler n/a
   mods
sparc struct sigcontext defined n/a struct sigcontext n/a
twice defined twice

an entry for 'fd' in /proc/devices (I assume so).

What kernel, distro, etc,

the rule is that if a package has built on an architecture, it must
continue to build there. so for arches like s390 and hppa which have
never built it, there is no problem. having said that, it would of
course be nice to have kaffe build on those architectures :-)

That's not so bad; it only eliminates r3000-series processors and earlier.
in terms of which boxes, i think that eliminates everything prior to

Re: Problem Compiling Sparc64 Kernel

I had the same problem myself. The solution (for me) was to modify the
/usr/src/linux/arch/sparch64/Makefile
so that, instead of calling sparc64-linux-ld, it used sparc64-linux-ld -m
elf64_sparc. You'll also need to make
sure sparc64-linux-as ends up calling as -m64 as well.

Ack! That flag to as (or sparc64-linux-as) should be -64, not -m64

2001-12-12 Thread Christian Joensson
I have woody installed on both an ss20 and an ss5. On the ss5 I boot

Any hints on how to get silo to boot from the ss20 disk?

TIA,

RE: Problem Compiling Sparc64 Kernel

2001-12-12 Thread Ian Chilton
Hello,

I had the same problem myself. The solution (for me) was to modify
the
 /usr/src/linux/arch/sparch64/Makefile
so that, instead of calling sparc64-linux-ld, it used
sparc64-linux-ld
 -m elf64_sparc. You'll also need to make
sure sparc64-linux-as ends up calling as -m64 as well.

Glad to see that someone else had the same problem. But, is this the
correct way to fix it (if so, why hasn't it been fixed in the tree?) or
is this a hack? (if so, what is the correct way?)

Thanks

Ian

Incorrect fix. Edit arch/sparc64/Makefile and find the NEW_GAS line, and
change --version to -V. Remove those symlinks too.
