Looks like I lied earlier - I can't ping anything, including localhost! I
keep on getting Network is unreachable errors. Ifconfig says that both
eth0 and lo interfaces are up, so I'm getting more confused...

Have a look at the routing table `route -n`, also try
 `ifdown -a; ifup -a`.

So I do apt-get source libssl0.9.6. Where does the source get put?

clue #1: man apt-get

Where

This makes much sense. I use SCSI on all the important Intel boxes.

FWIW, my Ultra5/IDE box experienced frequent disk troubles even when
it wasn't stressed much (desktop). It kept randomly changing
characters in files, leading to visible problems say once per 2-3
months[1]. When stressed more (mini-server for 4-5 people), the bug
visibility raised to about one per 2-3 weeks, and eventually led to an
unusable system. Both under Debian pre-woody and Solaris (I tested
Solaris in order to see whether it would improve, but nope -- my
impression was that it became even worse).

So, I think you would be probably better off with SCSI even for
desktops.

Re: Installing Debian on a Sparc Classic

2002-07-25 Thread Yann Marigo
Hello folks,

Hello!

Is it possible to install Debian on an old Sparc Classic Workstation ?

Yes, I've two Classic running Debian Potato

If yes, what for version of Debian ?

I do not have tried Woody yet, but it will probably work fine.
Use 2.2.20 or 2.2.21 kernel, more is a bit flawless ;-)

Is it possible to buy a set of CD ?

Yes, I think... look here:
http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/#ch

I've just a little connexion with a 56k modem.

I know the problem, less than one year ago, I were in the same case.

Ultra5 with woody and XFree 4.1

2002-07-25 Thread Igor Támara
Hi I upgraded to Woody from 2.2r6, there are plenty of packages useful
for that machine, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find a
solution for the problem of setting up XFree, I went to an address where
someone in the list found a solution with the framebuffer, but it was
broken :( .

I give info that can be useful for finding a solution.

uname -a gives
Linux gnu02 2.2.19 #1 Mon Apr 2 14:21:55 EDT 2001 sparc64 unknown

lspci gives

I also attach de XF86Config-4 that I'm using, I commented many items
that some prior messages in the list recommended to do, I also turned to
false UseFBDev , but without any success.

If all the /var/log/XFree86.0.log needs to be attached, I can send it
too, I thought it was a long one, apparently I didn't see any other errors.

Thanks in advance, guiding me where to read about the problem, an
XF86Config-4 file working on a machine like that, a link or whatever can
be useful to get a solution or somewhere to learn about that.

You need either a 2.4.x kernel, or the 2.2.20 Debian sun4u kernel.

Woody, Ultra 10 Creator3D

2002-07-25 Thread Chris Wren \(Sparc-Debian\)
Hi Guys

I'm having a problem getting X to work, now that I have upgraded to
Woody. running through the config, I set the card as sunffb but then
asked for the video cards bus identifier.

I understand that the Creator card in not PCI but UPA:

Jul 26 01:28:24 i03sw0034 unix: SUNW,ffb0 at root: UPA 0x1e 0x0
Jul 26 01:28:24 i03sw0034 unix: SUNW,ffb0 is /SUNW,[EMAIL PROTECTED],0

The config is requesting I enter the details in the following format:

PCI:nn:nn:nn

hm well I'm stumped and can't find any further details in the forums...

Cheers

Chris

Leave it blank. You only need that if you are doing multi head. Also, it
would actually be SBUS:xx.xx.xx, or whatever. Starting the X server will
show the cards that it probes, FYI.
