Re: kernel problem
I've got exactly the same problems. The watchdog is indeed a piece of protectional hardware, If you disable it your system will just crash instead of the reset. I'm using a spartstation4 110Mhz. with TurboGX framebuffer and CS4231 soundcard. Frank Van Damme wrote: Hello, I just installed Debian on a sparc laptop. When I try to use the kernel, I get - a message 'uncompressing image) - a few messages about bootmem etc (passes quickly) - an error "Watchdog reset" and I go back to the boot prompt again. just enter "1/boot/sparc64" to boot /boot/sparc64 from the first partition. Afterwards edit your silo.conf. This behaviour is propably a bug in the debian installation system, maybe it is restricted to installation by floppy disc only. We had this discussion already: After using Ben Collins' CD-Image, this issue has been solved for me (see the debian archives for details on this).
The End Of the Story - so far.
First, thanks for the responses on the best OS to install for an SS20. I was the one who had an Apple (Sony) cdrom connected externally to an SS20. Turns out the cdrom is NOT compatible with Sun stuff. I got a Toshiba this weekend and the install wizzed past the error I was getting with the Sony cdrom. Now my troubles are all human error since I know the hardware is ok. charles.

Sparc installation
Hi, I ha a Debian 3 NONUS Sparc64 cd with which I'm trying to install a Ultra 5/10 (sun4u) machine. When I boot from the cd SILO works fine but when I at the boot: prompt press enter I get the following error: Cannot find /boot/sparc64.gz. I checked the cd and noticed that there is no sparc64.gz file in the boot folder, only a sparc64 file. According to the SILO file the sparc64 file is only used for resque. Hmm, do I have a bad CD or what am I doing wrong? Kim

Floppy Install Problem on SS10
Hi Guys (and Gals)... I'm having some problems installing debian 3.0 onto an SS10 (128Mb RAM, 2xSM51, 4Gb HDD, Quad Ethernet card, SunGX). I don't have a Sun keyboard or monitor so all interaction with the system is via my laptop on the serial port. Basically, the machine boots off a rescue floppy quite happily and gets as far as asking for the root floppy, telling me to press return when I've inserted the disc. The problem is that it doesn't respond to me pressing return, in fact the only thing it *does* seem to respond to is ctrl-break which brings up the boot-prom prompt, obviously. I'm guessing that the system is expecting it's input to come from the keyboard rather than a tty once the kernel is booted and that's why it's not responding, so the question is: how do I get it to listen to the tty instead for the course of the install (obviously I can telnet/ssh into it once it's installed). Btw I've previously installed and run RH6.2 on this system with problems whatsoever so I'm reasonably sure that the hardware is sound. Cheers in advance for any advice given...
