Except that doesn't work; you need to provide a root filesystem
argument to the kernel. I said "to hell with it" and did a netboot
install instead.

How do you edit silo.conf on a CD? :-)

Re: kernel problem

2003-02-17 Thread Daniel van Eeden

I've got exactly the same problems.
The watchdog is indeed a piece of protectional hardware, If you disable
it your system will just crash instead of the reset.
I'm using a spartstation4 110Mhz. with TurboGX framebuffer and CS4231
soundcard.

just enter "1/boot/sparc64" to boot /boot/sparc64 from the first

I had trouble using audio with this kernel, though. The cs24231 module

at other times audio.o fails complaining "init_moduled: Input/output

There is an item on building a new kernel package in the Debian FAQ

make a bug report against the FAQ; (b) I can perhaps provide the .deb

Serial-port interaction should be no problem at all. I see only one
potential problem: I think the floppy-drive on most Sparcs are merely
decorative. Have you tried booting "net", getting the tftpboot.img?
That _usually_ works like a champ.

Your SPARC should automatically use the serial console for i/o since
there is no keyboard.

This behaviour is propably a bug in the debian installation system,
maybe it is restricted to installation by floppy disc only.
We had this discussion already: After using Ben Collins' CD-Image, this
issue has been solved for me (see the debian archives for details on
this).

First, thanks for the responses on the best OS to
install for an SS20. I was the one who had an
Apple (Sony) cdrom connected externally to an
SS20. Turns out the cdrom is NOT compatible
with Sun stuff. I got a Toshiba this weekend and
the install wizzed past the error I was getting with
the Sony cdrom. Now my troubles are all human
error since I know the hardware is ok.

Hello ,

when you have lilo prompt , you must specify to linux
where is the linux console .

In first time you must specify

Floppy Install Problem on SS10

2003-02-17 Thread Gary Parker
Hi Guys (and Gals)...
I'm having some problems installing debian 3.0 onto an SS10 (128Mb
RAM, 2xSM51, 4Gb HDD, Quad Ethernet card, SunGX). I don't have a Sun
keyboard or monitor so all interaction with the system is via my laptop on
the serial port.

Basically, the machine boots off a rescue floppy quite happily and gets as
far as asking for the root floppy, telling me to press return when I've
inserted the disc. The problem is that it doesn't respond to me pressing
return, in fact the only thing it *does* seem to respond to is ctrl-break
which brings up the boot-prom prompt, obviously.

I'm guessing that the system is expecting it's input to come from the
keyboard rather than a tty once the kernel is booted and that's why it's
not responding, so the question is: how do I get it to listen to the tty
instead for the course of the install (obviously I can telnet/ssh into it
once it's installed).

Btw I've previously installed and run RH6.2 on this system with problems
whatsoever so I'm reasonably sure that the hardware is sound.

Cheers in advance for any advice given...
