No, I'm not sure. If it is using /dev/urandom then the lockups can't
be being caused by the entropy pool becoming empty, because /dev/urandom
won't block in this case like /dev/random would, right?

Look, I have a U5 with nothing running except ssh so I can login and do
kernel builds. It has never locked up like this.

Since the only difference between your U5 and mine is that your physical
hardware is not mine (meaning maybe you have memory errors, or cpu/fpu
is too hot and is producing problems) and you are behind a firewire, I'd
go with one of those problems.

The symptoms didn't look consistent with ssh not getting entropy
anyway. For what it's worth, it uses /dev/urandom (via the openssl
library).

$ strings /usr/lib/v9/libcrypto.so.0.9.6 | egrep /dev/u?random
/dev/urandom
$

It would also be clear from strace.

Hi Ayo

I have an SS20 running Debian Woody with sbus graphics, kernel 2.4.?
configured and compiled by myself. X works fine on that machine.

At the moment, I do not have access to my SS20 - if you don't have a solution
until friday, send me a mail. I can send you my XF86Config if you want.

Regards,

   Hartwig

a) Do not reply to some random thread, leaving the full text of that
   thread in the email, to ask a simple question.

b) Leave off the full page .sig from your emails

c) Send me (and the list) /var/log/XFree86.0.log. A copy of the messages
   you see on the screen would help.

I'm using a TurboGX w/o any problems on a ss4. Which Debian/XFree86
version are you using? Did you look in /var/log/XFree86.?.log ?

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and change DefaultDepth to 8.
