OpenOffice.org is the code equivalent of a nuclear submarine built
entirely from popsicle sticks.

It has arch and OS specific asm code in it. Don't look at it too long,
or you will go insane.

As far as I'm concerned (having looked at the OOo code base and patched
it into building for Aurora), "The Shrink" deserves a medal. At the very
minimum, he deserves his sanity back. ;)

2003-06-12 Thread Nate Campi
Not that this is much help, but I've had all kinds of problems getting
debian installed onto netra t1's. I just do all my installations on a
UE2 and move the disks over to my 220Rs, 420Rs and netra t1s. It always
works perfectly.

In fact I have a E6500 I might ship out a woody disk to the datacenter
it's in and ask them to boot it while I sit on the console port
remotely. I would be pretty cool to see 20-some processors on a debian
linux box ;)

Oh yes you can. There's nothing platform specific about TFTP. Just set up TFTP
and rarpd on some unix/linux box and serve up the files. I think I even remember
hearing about someone using tftp from an NT box, or maybe that was something
else.

Do you not have another *nix box to install from?

Why is a userspace app like openoffice hardware dependent? It normally works
on Solaris/Sparc doesn't it?

Have you tried it as neither a master nor a slave? That really ought to

Re: CDROM error at 99% of install - video card driver problem

2003-06-12 Thread Pete Ballasy

Ben,

No scratches.  I tried reburning disc 1, no go.  I tried downloading (with jigdo) and burning an image from another mirror, no go.  Still get the error. FYI:  The orginal CD was from a 6-CD set ordered from Cheapbytes.com.

What I ended up doing was using the Stop - i command to kill the process which, to my amazement, brought me back to the first screen of phase 2 of the install.  I then checked all packages to be installed (most were already in place) and chose cdrom for media type.  Would not read ANY disc 1, even the download versions. (!!!)  I may have a dead cdrom drive, but until I get a SCSI cdrom test drive, I am considering it inoperable.

I started phase 2 again and chose ftp for media and let it go.  Install is complete, Debian is set as default OS through open boot and boots to the linux shell.

My next problem is upon entering the X windows environment, I get a discolored half-screen of pixels and it returns back to the shell.  It does this three times, then the Debian diag window pops up and wants to check video card configuration (this is getting fun!).  I run through the config, but not being a linux expert, did only what I could do.

Will modifying the XFConfig -4 file help?  I'm looking into this, also.

Now, I do recall when I sent my first message to the group and you replied back that the Raptor GFX PCI card might not work.  The only options I had for an X server video driver during installation were:  ati, glint, fbdev, suncg3, 6, and 14, sunleo, sunffb, suntcx and sunbw2 ( I did look these all up through a google search to help define what each one was ) so I chose fbdev, with my fingers crossed. Well, I guess it's not going to function with that choice.

I searched freshmeat.net and google, but not many hits on raptor GFX video drivers on sparc.  Still looking...

Any ideas? Thanks,

It's not an IDE thing, it's a CDROM thing. Some just don't want to be
masters. I don't know why they even have jumpers. Others are OK being
masters. I think most recent drives can handle being masters, but I
could be wrong. In my experience it's pretty much a toss-up whether a
given drive will work when jumpered as master.

I doubt it will build. There was a port of openoffice.org 1.0.3 to
Sparc/linux floating around that a guy know as "The Shrink" did for
Aurora. I made a patch from his source and posted it to the Aurora
Sparc list. Here is a link to it:

http://www.dslextreme.com/users/tomduffy/openoffice-sparc.diff.bz2

Once applying this patch, you should be able to build 1.0.3.
