2.6.2 on SS20

2004-03-05 Thread James Whatever

Hey folks.

I'm just about to compile up 2.6 for the first time on my SS20, which
has a dual 125MHz ross hypersparc card in it. I've done heaps of 2.6
upgrades on x86 and powerpc, but I thought I had better check for
gotyas that other people might have run into - like the fact that
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y makes a powerpc machine randomly segfault processes :)

Looking forward to some advice. Thanks!

Debian on Enterprise 3500 /w Fiber Channel Disks

2004-03-05 Thread Daniel Beckman

I have an Enterprise 3500, with two disks on FC-AL. Has anyone gotten
Debian to work on one of these? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I've been Googling for the past few hours with little success.

Thanks!

Should work great, it's the same motherboard as the ultra60 and E220R.
Except that the netra 112[05] came with 440MHz processors even though those
other two have 450MHz processors available.

I installed Woody (= 3.0 stable) on some SS20 with SBUS and with onboard
graphics, never had to use a serial console ?!?

I suggest to check your openboot environment.

I don't have access to my SS20's until monday, if you still need help, feel

Newbie Sparcstation 20 question

2004-03-05 Thread James Nelson
I have a sparcstation 20 I am trying to install 3.0 stable onto, and
have a question. The system boots fine from the CD's, but it hangs with
a "no console found - try passing an init= option" error. I have a
GX-series SBus video card, and the only thing I could find after quite a
bit of Googling around is to use a serial terminal for installation. Is
there any way to pass options to the install kernel via SILO so that I
can use the Sun keyboard & graphics adapter for the system console, or
should I go buy a Sun null modem cable?

Sarge on Netra T1

2004-03-05 Thread kurt

I can's seem to find any spcific information on this. I am considering
putting Debian on a Netra T1. Will the Netra T1 accept Woody or Sarge? I
have heard that later OBP versions are not compatible with Linux. My
intended use would be for a webserver. Thanks.

Whenever I enable dma my filesystem gets corrupted. Ben suggested to
disable dma, which I did and its fine now (no corruption) but no dma.

I run woody with 2.4.21

Tried to install 2.4.24 oncde but the keyborad did not work from the
first time and I gave up. It would be nice if you can provide with the
config for 2.4.24

Thanks

Hi,

i am just wondering what do you mean by problem?

as my sunblade runs OK with kernel 2.4.18 for 12 months and 2.4.24 since
yesterday, using debian stable and testing and unstable at different times,
so if you can say what is the problem it can surely be easy to fix, as there
are many who will be happy to help :)

Reccomendations for Sun Linux

2004-03-05 Thread D Lambrou
Hi there.
We are planning to buy some new machines (Sun) to run services such as
mail ,web etc..

Nothing too fancy . Can you recommend some machines that you know that
are working fine with Debian ?
For example I have a Sun blade 100 which has a problem with dma and I
cannot use it as a live system. I want to install woody.

Thanks

Re: Building custom kernel

2004-03-05 Thread Janos Sziliczi
Jim,

Igmar and me said same thing.

The essence:
CC has to be 64 bit C compiler
HOSTCC has to be 32 bit C compiler

(Igmar has 64 bit gcc, I have 32 bit gcc, so we said the same.)
Check whether the above things is true on your computer.

Other suggestion:

The 'make menuconfig' uses the ncurses5 library.

Check which version is installed on your Sparc:
- libncurses5, libncurses5-dev
or
- lib64ncurses5(?), lib64ncurses5-dev (as Igmar wrote)

Just try the 'make config' command. If it will be start, the
problem is in ncurses.
The 'make menuconfig' uses the HOSTCC compiler.

If you have libncurses5-dev the HOSTCC, which contains 32 bit
compiler should be work.

However, if you have lib64ncurses5-dev, try to change HOSTCC to 64 bit
compiler. (I don't know whether it is work, because the HOSTCC is used in
another compiling threads also.)

Jana

openoffice linux sparc

2004-03-05 Thread Jim Watson
Hi,

i am looking for someone with sparc knowledge who would like to help with
the openoffice.org linux sparc porting on a regular basis, this involves
helping to solve any problems upstream to reduce the workload for debian
packagers.

i can do the building but need a sparc mentor to review somecode, help
interpret error messages, suggest fixes etc, as SUN people are always very
helpful but it would be nice to get some other support.

The kernel that Sarge ships doesn't support 64 bit ELF's, and that is what
GCC spits out by default.

Hi,

presumed you use unstable, installing gcc-3.3 and lib64ncurses5-dev
should be enough to make menuconfig and build the kernel. At least
it is on my U2, wich needs a 64bit kernel too.

I've just been here myself. The following works for me :

- Install the kernel source in /usr/src and symlink it

- Verify your gcc can spit out the right stuff :

test.c :

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
   return 0;
}

guru:~# gcc -o test test.c
guru:~# file test
test: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, SPARC V9, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux
2.4.18, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

guru:~# sparc-linux-gcc -o test test.c
guru:~# file test
test: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, SPARC, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux
2.2.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

If the above is the same for you, then :

- vi the Makefile, and change

HOSTCC = gcc
to
HOSTCC  = sparc-linux-gcc

- Run make menuconfig, make dep; make vmlinuz, and do the usuall install
stuff.

I end up with :

guru:/usr/src/linux# file vmlinux
vmlinux: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, SPARC V9, version 1 (SYSV), statically
linked, not stripped

After booting that, I can also run 64 bit binaries, so when you actually
run it, the above hack isn't necessary anymore :

guru:~# gcc -o test test.c
.guru:~# ./test
foo
guru:~# file test
test: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, SPARC V9, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux
2.4.18, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped
