structure error in make menuconfig in kernel 2.6

2004-04-15 Thread Marcos Vinicius Lazarini
Hi All,

I have an old Ultra 1 running Debian with the original 2.4.18 kernel that
came in the installation CD. I had some difficulties trying to install a
brand-new 2.6 kernel, but this problems will be addressed in a specific
mail. Now I just want to report a problem (well, at least I think it is
wrong).

Tested in 2.6.4 and 2.6.5 and both have the same behavior.

do: make menuconfig

choose: Graphics support  --->

I had the following situation:
[*] Support for frame buffer devices
[ ] SBUS and UPA framebuffers
[ ] Virtual Frame Buffer support (ONLY FOR TESTING!)

When I selected "SBUS and UPA framebuffers", we got:
[*] Support for frame buffer devices
 [ ] BWtwo support
 [ ] CGthree support
 [ ] CGsix (GX,TurboGX) support
 [*] SBUS and UPA framebuffers
 [ ] Creator/Creator3D/Elite3D support
 [ ] TCX (SS4/SS5 only) support
 [ ] CGfourteen (SX) support
 [ ] P9100 (Sparcbook 3 only) support
 [ ] Leo (ZX) support
[ ] Virtual Frame Buffer support (ONLY FOR TESTING!)

Either BW2, CG3 and CG6 options should be inside "SBUS and UPA
framebuffers" or should appear all the time. To me, the tree structure is
not right.

If I'm wrong, please someone help me understand the situation.

Thanks in advance,
Marcos Lazarini

Re: SS20 boot problem

2004-04-15 Thread Eric Brower
It is possible that your disk is external or is not in the primary SCSI
disk slot. Stop-A, as you have been doing. Type 'probe-scsi-all' to
see where you disk is located. Type 'devalias' and find the matching
alias (i.e. "disk1"). Set a new default boot device with "setenv
boot-device ". Then "reset" and all should be
well with the world; well, depending upon where you installed SILO

If you are worried that other OBP settings may be incorrect, you can
hold down Stop-N during the boot process to reset your NVRAM parameters
to defaults.

I don’t have that option. Autoboot is set to true, and it tries to boot to

net by default. Of course I can stop + A. If I remember correctly, I need to
specify to boot to the hard drive. I know how to boot to the hard drive, but
not set it as default. Also, my device path to the hard drive seems to be
incorrect.

actually when the OBP boot: prompt comes up just hit enter

when you try "boot disk" you have to provide the device and the boot image
(iirc)

I have an SS10, SS20, and Ultra 5 all running debian. I never provide
parameters to the OBP prompt unless I want to boot from the CDROM or floppy

Hi Lorenzo,

You can make the partitions in a normal PC with fdisk or cfdisk. Once
you get the metadata written in the harddisk, kernel will detect
the right geometry information and passing them to the fdisk.
After that you can make any partitions you want in your debian-sparc
installation.

Nevertheless, I have some problems running big harddisk with the
RAID which will be my question in my next email.

Cheers,

You have to increase the number of heads or sectors. Alternatively, if it
is not going to be a boot disk, you can make a DOS partition table (maybe
in a x86 PC). Linux/Sparc handles it with no problems (see "Advanced
Patition Selection" in the linux kernel).

Debian + HardDrive 250GB

2004-04-15 Thread Lorenzo
Hi everyone,

I've an Ultra10 workstation with Debian on it.
I just bought a new Hitachi Deskstar 250GB an install in it.
Here is wat i get in my logs :
...
hdb: HDS722525VLAT80, ATA DISK drive
hdb: 268435455 sectors (137439 MB) w/7938KiB Cache, CHS=266305/16/63, (U)DMA
...

My problem is that it only recognise a maximum of 30GB (glurps !! :-) after
setting up with fdisk utilities.
I tried different specifications in fdisk but no success, i'm stuck with the
number of Cylinders : the drive specifies 266305 and fdisk don't let me
specify more than 65535.

Does anyone have an idea/suggestion/tips to help me ?

Thanx.

Lorenzo

Certainly works for me, thanks a lot.

But it is my opinion that a warning message should be displayed when
installing/upgrading, I've googled the first time the screen went blank,
after that I hope that after a couple of days the problem would be fixed
(unstable attitude ;-) ) but after that the machine just stood
idle here until this post. So I think that many other users that are
confronted to this problem won't find a quick solution either.

Greetings and thanks a lot for this post
