stable / testing issue
Dear listmembers, after the recent commentary I modified the settings in /etc/apt from testing to stable to rest with sarge. However, I know that I had had upgraded several files that are not part of sarge but of testing. Unlucky me :-). After adjustment, the only thing that was installed was the sudo-security upgrade. I would have wanted that thing to go back to the old versions out of stable! Is there a way to check which files are affected and revert them to the stable versions? near death experience sunblade 100
Hi, I am not asking for anything, I realise this is not reproducible and I have little data. I am just reporting what happened in case it means something to someone. I have been running debian unstable on a sun blade 100 for about 3 years. I reformatted the disk and re-installed debian unstable a few weeks ago. Last night the machine stopped, as I see from the time displayed was ten minutes after midnight. Next morning no response to keyboard or mouse so I powered off and restarted. The prom reported it could not boot. The mac address was all ::: At the ok prompt I typed boot and it reported boot Linux then stopped. I powered off and restarted a couple of times, no luck. I tried test-all and it stopped after testing about three items (usb i think). I powered off and restarted and it rebooted correctly and now functions as before. Except it had lost my kde desktop settings, but retained mozilla settings. thanks jim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sarge CD install hangs...
I have this sparc ultra 5 360 that I bought from Kachina Tech way back when. (They are no longer in business...) The machine has been in moth balls for several years while I waited on a project. Well, Sarge was released and I bought a set of install disks from copyleft (Thanks Phil!) and with a bit of reading (thanks for the reminders about how to get into OpenBoot, although on my machine it is Ctrl-Break followed by A ;-) I was able to get the install started I'm able to tell it to boot from the cdrom and that seems to work, and the first few screens wizz by taking all the defaults. Then it checks hardware, the CD, some more hardware etc. and finally presents a screen that tells me I have multiple Ethernet ports, and which one should it use. Now I thought this was going to be a CD install, but imagine my surprise when I couldn't even move down the list of choices, and there were no active buttons, although the go back button was partially constructed. I seems to hang there reliably, although the number of timer bars clocking various activities changes from attempt to attempt. The Ethernet built in to the original system failed long ago (which is why I put the machine in mothballs) but recently I came across a fellow who had a 4 port Ethernet cart to sell at reasonable price, so I bought it. I suspect that something about having the card installed is crashing the installation script, but don't really have a clue. It does seem to be able to see the CD ok as one of the timer bars is titled Scanning ... with various archive pool path names from the CD. When I remove the card, the dialog about choosing between ethernet ports no longer appears, and several other things occur before the message: Network autoconfiguration failed, with a description about how the DHCP server may be slow or the hardware not working... Again the install is completely hung with an incomplete rendering of the dialog box. I'm not hooked up on any of these ports, and my expectation was that I was doing a CD installation, so why is it looking at these ports at all, but more important why does this hang the installation script (at two different locations in the logic path)? Anyone else have similar issues, or know what I should do about this one? Luck, Dwarf P.S. Please CC me as I am not subscribed to this list.
Re: No sound in Ultra 5 running Debian 3.1
Hello, afaik there are some issues using alsa friends. Maybe it's that kind of problem you're facing. (I don't understand what is the beep you mentionned) Sound works well on my U5 but only when I enable the sparcaudio drivers and with no soundcard support in the kernel. Moreover I use aumix and audioctl to control the mixer. And only few players do their job (hum .. xmms works only when I launch gqmpeg just before). I posted an answer few months ago for the same sound-on-u5 issue. I might be wrong and not up-to-date but I hope it will help you. For further hints ... as far as I remember I wrote some here: http://ginfo.egim-mrs.fr/article.php3?id_article=36 kind regards, Aurélien kwy wrote: Hi, I am a newbie to Debian Linux on Sparc. Recently, I successfully installed the Debian 3.1 (Sarge) on my Ultra 5. Everything seems ok except the sound. I cannot change the sound volume in Speaker icon at the top right hand side corner of the GNOME desktop. I do enable the sound server in GNOME desktop. When it starts up, I can hear the beep and it is not a hardware problem. Would somebody help me? Regards, kwy -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
