Re: sparc meeting requirements for etch
Getting auric up is just a matter of turning it on and doing an install. The problem isn't anyone's fault but my own, so don't go making the admin team out to be ignoring you. The buildd maintainers know that it's on me to get that machine reconfigured. I'm in the middle of a move, so after that (1 maybe 2 weeks), I'll get on it. Email me directly to remind me if you want (would be appreciated). Since previous offers of hardware (not just from me) have been ignored or refused, this is not a matter of hardware availability but of the debian-admin team not doing anything with the offers. Again, I am offering my help and hardware to help fix this problem. If hosting is available within 50 miles of Los Angeles, California, USA, I am willing to act as local system administrator. (I can supply and install the machine.) I am willing to act as a buildd administrator. If desired, I could join the debian-admin team. If nothing better is available, I could even host a machine on my DSL line, and give it a static IP. Contact me at my debian.org email address (same user name) if you want to discuss any of these offers privatly. vore is currently the only active buildd machine, and it is unable to keep up with the desired 98% durring the middle of the release cycle. However, it is close and the release team might be willing to accept two machines of this class as meeting the N+1 buildd requirement. auric (a faster machine) has been down for a long time with problems on its raid controler. I suspect that one of the disk drives could be taken out of the raid array and mounted internally, giving it more than enough storage to run as a buildd and developer accessable machine. Alternativly, I could supply an external or internal drive. kubric is not worth fixing, and should have been removed from the db.debian.org list of machines years ago. Ben Collins offered to replace vore and auric with a bigger machine. However, this would not meet the N+1 requirement. Sparcblade 1000 systems are available for about $600 now. Unless the debian-admin team explains what help it needs or fixes the situation reasonably soon, I'll have to consider this as an silent exercise of their veto power over an architecture. -- Blars Blarson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.blars.org/blars.html With Microsoft, failure is not an option. Help with sarge and some new workstation and server
Hello All, I need to test debian on a Sun Blade 2500 (UltraSparc III) and Sun Fire 6800 (UltraSparc IV). Currently I have a Sun Blade 1000 for testing. I tried many ways to install and run debian with no success. As said on many messages on the list, CD boot install does not work. I tried with a netboot install based in the latest development tftp image and its works but I can´t boot. My questions are: Is there a restriction on witch partition must be the boot linux partition with SILO ? (like first 8Gb for PC based machines) Is there a way to create partitions with fdisk with netboot ? How can I check if SILO was successfully installed ? How can I create partitions for linux installation from Solaris 10 Installation wizard ? Will debian run on the platforms first mentioned without any issues ? If there are issues, can any give a list of common problems on boot, running and stability of debian ? Thanks, Alejandro Galue.

It is Ultra 10 with an UltraSparc II 333MHz, 256MB of RAM and 60GB of disk. It already has sbuild running on it with woody, sarge, etch and sid chroots. So turning it into a buildd is only a question of having access to wanna-build. I would prefer to keep it at home on my DSL line, as I am also using it as a development machine from time to time. It does not have a public IP address, but that should not be a problem, I am already running a kfreebsd-i386 build daemon that way. -- .''`. Account on sparc machine(s) wanted
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, I am a member of Debian kernel team, working (to the extent of my abilities) on sparc-specific bugs. Recently I have moved and thus was forced to get rid of all my sparc hardware which I used for d-i testing and kernel work. The plans to get some new machines are on the way (Blars Blarson has a sparc32 box waiting for me and Andres Salomon is planning to ship an Ultra 5 my way), but it will take at least a few more weeks before I can lay my hands on them. In the meantime I can't even do test kernel builds or any basic testing/porting. If you have a possibility to open an account for me on a sparc box for this purpose, I would really appreciate it. If the box can be rebooted remotely or accessed via the serial console, that would be a huge plus.
