working usb-card?

2006-09-06 Thread Martin Lemmen
hi all!
i have a sun sparc with debian etch, kernel 2.6, running, and i want a usb
port.

i have found some hints what to buy (opti) and what not (VIAUSB20 VIA VT6212)
in older posts (http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2004/04/msg00164.html) to
this list.

however, this discussion is 2 years old. so, i would appreciate newer
experiences with working or not working usb cards. another thing, is there
anything to look for in buying usb hubs?

regards, martin

Re: Problems on Blade 1000 after etch instalation

2006-09-06 Thread Luis Martinez
I have noticed that the problem of the xserver had to do with a bad
configuration of afbinit.

How can I make that the root file system is mounted on the blade1000?
The qlogicfc module is not loaded on the boot process even though it is
 in the initrd.img file.
I have modified the initrd.img and added to the modules file the line
qlogicfc, now the disks are detected and the system boots.

Which is the difference that makes the Ultra60 not to load when
specifying the initrd file when this file works on normal booting?
I have to add the root=/dev/sdxy to the boot string when specifying the
booting string. (I think that this is normal).

Now the system is booting but I have some more problems.

1.- The system stops while trying to run the cupsys daemon. I had to
take this out from the booting process.
2.- xwindows do not work. The blade is running with a creator 3D M3
adapter, afb code is loaded OK. The x screen starts for 1 or 2 seconds
and then dies with signal 11 saying that connection is reset by peer. If
I move the mouse while starting the xserver then the x screen lasts less
 time.

The keyboard (sub type 6 spanish) is set like this.
 Driver kbd
 Option XkbRules xorg
 Option XkbModel pc105
 Option XkbLayout es

The modules for the sunffb (cfb and cfb32) are also included in the
 xorg.conf
 Any clue?

3.- The fans of the blade 1000 are runing 100% speed. Is there a kernel
module to control the fans out there to solve this?

 Thanks and best regards,

 Luis

oldinit when I try to boot with boot:1/vmlinuz initrd=1/oldinit I
have the same problem than with the blade 1000 (initrd.img found and
scsi module loaded but wait for root file system message and finally

   Hello,

I have been trying to install Debian Etch on a Blade 1000 using a
   netboot image.

The machine has 2 FCAL disks for storage.
After the instalation the machine loads silo and when the system is
booting it finally stays for ever with a message that says waiting for
   root filesystem.
I have checked the initrd and it has in the module tree the qlogicfc.
The qloficfc controller seems to be detected on boot but at the end I
have a lot of messages regarding qla2xxx that I dont know if they should
   be there.

   Thanks in advance,

Hello every one,

Is there any kernel module for to control the temperature sensors and
thus the fans for the blade 1000.

Regards,

Luis

CONFIG_BBC_I2C=m
in your .config file builds the bbc module, and it is supposed to do
what you are asking. But last time I tried it, it had a horrible side
effect: it took over the system completely for about 2 seconds out of
every 5. That was with a 2.6.15 kernel, though, so it might do better
with something more current today. If you build the bbc module, of
course you can play with it and see how it does today.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Ferris

Almost certainly not. I don't think any sparc developers have
specifications for it; there is no kernel support; a driver would be a
major effort with small return.

Ferris

i've buyed a low brand (Trust) USB2 PCI card, i don't remember well the
chipset (i think VIA) but works like a charm on my Ultra 30. ;)

Re: working usb-card?

2006-09-06 Thread Chance Platt

I've used NEC-based USB cards with perfect success under both 2.4 and
2.6 kernels, on an Ultra 60 and SB2000. I believe one was an
Adaptec card I picked up from a local retailer.

IIRC, I had less success with the VIA-based USB cards. It worked
perfectly in 2.6, but not in 2.4 (which at the time, was my goal --
works perfect with both).

>From my few experiences with USB on Sparc, just about any PCI card that works on x86 with 2.6 kernels will work on sparc on 2.6.

The issues that may arise are PCI initialization that would require an
x86 BIOS. This is usually troublesome with PCI video cards, but
seems to be essentially a non-issue with PCI USB cards.
