Updating OBP without Solaris

2006-10-23 Thread Mark Morgan Lloyd
I've been playing over the last couple of days with booting Sun's Standalone
Flash PROM Update Utility over the network using rarp and tftp, to good effect.

As a general question, does anybody know whether the OS can check the state of
the write protect/enable jumper (and/or front panel keyswitch as appropriate)
for security purposes?

I'm not sure about the jumper, but there are experimental
(out-of-kernel) drivers for SUNW,envctrl (E450) and SUNW,envctrltwo
(E250) that are able to read the keyswitch position. Other platforms
could likely be supported as well. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,
E

Thanks Eric, I've not got a 250 or 450 but am hoping to lay my hands on a 4500
as soon as we can get a van up to the seller. Otherwise the only machines I've
got with keyswitches are 1000Es, and since those are like nothing else on Earth
I doubt your code would apply :-)

I'll be in touch once I've got the extra machine if it turns out to be a useful
hacker platform.

Greetings! What machine can I use to investigate and hopefully fix a
sparc-only bug in one of my packages?

Take care,

Sun Ultra 10 for sale

2006-10-23 Thread Earl Violet
I don't know if this is the proper place to list this or not but here
goes.

I work for a charity in Tucson, AZ called World Care. Part of what we
do is refurbish computers. Right now I have 2 Sun U10s with 128 MB
ram, IIi 300 MHz Processor and 4 GB IDE hard drive. They have Creator
video cards (not 3D) each has a Sun SCSI card installed. I installed
basic Debian on one and Basic netBSD on the other so I know the CDROM
and hard drive works.

If anyone is interested, we are asking $20 + shipping for them. As
this is for charity, it is deductable. Please contact me at
