Re: Reccomendations for Sun Linux

2004-03-05 Thread D Lambrou
Whenever I enable dma my filesystem gets corrupted. Ben suggested to
disable dma, which I did and its fine now (no corruption) but no dma.

I run woody with 2.4.21

Tried to install 2.4.24 oncde but the keyborad did not work from the
first time and I gave up. It would be nice if you can provide with the
config for 2.4.24

Thanks

Reccomendations for Sun Linux

2004-03-05 Thread D Lambrou
Hi there.
We are planning to buy some new machines (Sun) to run services such as
mail ,web etc..

Nothing too fancy . Can you recommend some machines that you know that
are working fine with Debian ?
For example I have a Sun blade 100 which has a problem with dma and I
cannot use it as a live system. I want to install woody.

Thanks

Well you can use any kernel from kernel.org
So the latest is 2.4.24 or 2.6.1.
I would say you try 2.4.x since 2.6.x requires a somewhat later gcc.
Unless you are running unstable or testing (you might be ok).
Anyway on woody I need to upgrade to later gcc (or egcs64?? ) which I
really dont want to do right now .

Neither SBUS nor PCI (again)

2004-01-08 Thread D Lambrou
I am trying to compile and install 2.4.21 on SunBlade100 patched with
the mremap bug fixed.
Compile is ok.
But I get Neither SBUS nor PCI when loading kernel.
This error was appearing when I was trying to install from old tftboot
as well.(phunnypharm image worked fine)

Is there a specific Option that I should include or leave out?
I found the following relevant options:

CONFIG_SBUS=y
CONFIG_SBUSCHAR=y
CONFIG_PCI=y
CONFIG_PCI_NAMES (tried yes and no)

Looking in the src I found
./drivers/sbus/sbus.c
if(!pcibios_present())
Looks like it is looking in a pci_list but does not find PCI devs??
But this is as far as I can go.

Thanks in advance

I think image limit is 2.6 M
Check if the image is bigger. If yes try to strip it and gzip it again.

Error loading /vmlinuz
>
> Image not found try again

I would recommend to check silo.conf and make sure that
the right image is specified in silo
Also you might want to try at the OPB prompt:
> boot disk image_label -p

Maybe you want to specify disk at OPB to make sure it points to the
right place.

Hope this helps a bit

Invalid ELF header

2003-12-30 Thread D Lambrou
I really dont know what it is . It might be that my machine (hardware)
is not ok (SunBlade100)
The problem is quite random so it might be the disk or the memory. On
the other hand it is only happenning with libraries and modules (so it
could be the memory).
I get Invalid ELF header . If i reboot the problem moves to another file
:-/ some times.

Any ideas??
I tried intsalling from Net (installation OK)
>From mini iso (Some retries for extracting packages and installing base
system)
and The CD image which says it can not find reiserfs progs.

Any pointers are appreciated.
Thanks

No Trouble installing Debian on a SunBlade 100

2003-12-29 Thread D Lambrou

Thanks to this mailing list here is what you do:
Maybe you want to try installing the new image fisrt(Step 2). If it does
not work do 1 and then 2 and you are cool.

1) Upgrade to latest OBP
Full instructions and patch :
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunBlade100/SunBlade100.html

2) Follow instructions:
http://www.de-brauwer.be/docs/debian_on_sun.html

And then download new image from instead from the location the
instructions say:
http://www.phunnypharm.org/pub/for/sparc-folks/disks-sparc/

I used tftp image and all the old problems where dissapearred.
Luckily this phunnyfarm site appeared and looks like that all the latest
sparc, from auric , are there now.Since auric is down.

I had many problems with SunBlade100. Now most of the probs are solved.
Beware of how you will partition your disk. SILO has some probs with
boot images located after the 1G point .
So I have a /boot at hda1 (20MB) and / at hda2 (800MB) and the rest all
over the disk.

Hope this helps

Upgrade of OBP was succesfull!
But I think you should tell me where I get the updated image for debian.
I used
http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-sparc/current/tftpboot.img

But I get
>Neither SBUS nor PCI found
>Program terminated

Oh and CDROM install gives same error again
>Fast Data Access MMU Miss

thanks

Openboot 4.5.9

2003-12-22 Thread D Lambrou
Hi there
Any ideas where I can find a patch for upgrading the firmware to
v. 4.5.9?
It looks like 4.5.9 solves an issue I have with installing Debian on
a SunBlade 100.

Thanks
