Those who has successfully netboot Debian, Give me a help!

2002-01-28 Thread Gavinux Li
I have a IPX 48M ram, ether net, 500M HD, no keyboard,
no monitor. I use serial console to connect to that
IPX from other linux PC.
I have tried to net boot my IPX from a redhat linux
server for 1 month, but never succedded.
It seems some persons have boot it, Would you please
give me detail steps, how to boot it?
I just used serveral hours and I got the IPX boot
NetBSD successfully, But why Debian is so difficult?
I attached a pdf of the detail steps of how I made it
boot NetBSD.

By the way, I found the debian mailling list is the
most slowest list, I post something, but it only will
appear on the list half day latter!! FUNNY! :-O

Thanks for your help.

Hi, loic
Thank for your reply again.

I check my nfs server(Redhat 6.2, 7.1) running with
portmapper version 2
nfsversion 1,2
mountd version 1,2

I can find out this server from the other
client(Mandrake 8.0) by rpcinfo -p 192.168.1.1, the
nfs can be mounted to the client also.

per to my previous post, after the sparc kernel saind
RPC error 51, it said try floppy, and ask me to insert
floppy and click enter. I ///did/// insert a floppy
and click enter, but there is no any response.
So, I think the sparc boot up with RPC error 51 means
the linux kernel for sparc SUN4CDM is not correctly
configured. Am I right?

Re: net boot linux still has problems!!!

2002-01-14 Thread Gavinux Li
Hi,

Thanks the reply.

I don't think I need bootparamd bootpd, because they
are used for bootp,

And, The HOW-TO in debian website never mentioned that
"rshd, rlogind, telnetd, ftpd, mountd, rpcbind" is
needed to boot from network, so I never installed it.
I just installed a minimium system include arp, rarp,
tftp, nfs, portmap, nothing else.
So, Do you mean I should install something else?

Why can't boot from network

I've got a null modem cable connected my Pentium75 PC
to the SPARC IPX, and I run minicom on Redhat 7.1 in
my PC, I send Ctrl+A F got into PROM console.

I installed rarpd, arp, tftpd, bootparamd using rpm
today on Redhat 7.1.
I created a /etc/ethers which contains:
sparc 08:00:20:1a:2b:3c
I added a line in /etc/hosts, which is:
192.168.10.12 sparc
I started rarpd by rarpd -a
I also issued command arp -f to make sure it reads
/etc/ethers
Then I issued arp command, it displays:
Address HWtpe HWaddress Flags Mask Iface
sparcether 08:00:20:1a:2b:3c CMeth1

Now I boot my sparc IPX and enter serial console, and
issue command:
ok boot net

BUT, I got
Boot Device: /sbus/[EMAIL PROTECTED],c0 File and args:
Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet

I spend a whole day tried to find out what wrong it
is, and read lots of documents in the internet, but I
can't find out the problem,

Please give a hand to help me out.

Thanks a lot.

how to enter boot prompt for PC's Hyperterminal?

2002-01-09 Thread Gavinux Li
I connect to SPARC IPX by reading
http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#q_5_1
23. How can I connect a machine for an installation
via a serial cable ?
Essentially, if there is no keyboard plugged in when
the Sun has booted, it will use the serial interface
(port A), By default it is set to 9600bps 8,n,1
What kind of cable should I use. I made the
conection to PC serial port and use HyperTerminal on
PC, the cable I made is:

SPARC Port A PC COM2
   RXD TXD
   TXD RXD
   GND GND
Is this the right one?///

You can force the serial console from the boot (ok)
prompt:

   ok setenv input-device ttya
   ok setenv output-device ttya
/// Does it input in the SPARC kerboard? Otherwise how
can I enter boot prompt from HyperTerminal, How to
simulate STOP A key from HyperTerminal on PC side? ///
On the other (PC?) side running any terminal emulator
will work (kermit, minicom, seyon)
/// If I use minicom in PC-Linux, Which keys should I
press to simulated STOP A key?///

Help is needed to install linux on sparc IPX

2002-01-07 Thread Gavinux Li
Hi, all,
I am a newcomer to this mailing list.
I got a sparc IPX recently, it has 48M memory, a SCSI
harddisk, a floopy, a 10BaseT network interface,
without keyboard, without monitor, without mouse.
I want to install debian-linux on this IPX, How can I
do it?
I have a Pentium 75 with SCSI interface, maybe it will
help to install linux.

Anyone who can drop me a line of how to install it
will be very appreciated!

It is a big challange for me to do it without
keyboard, monitor, CDROM. :-(

Thanks.
