netscape 476 pkgs for sparc?

2001-07-16 Thread Howard Glynn
Forgive the newbie question, please :)

How can I install netscape-476, or more accurately, i
suppose, where do i point apt sources at to pick it up?
My sources.list is as per install with...

deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb-src ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib
non-free

I can see lots of netscape 476 support pkgs on my 2.2r3
cd's and i can see the same at the ftp mirror but
i keep getting complaints about dependancies on
netscape-base-476 and communicator-base-476.

No amount of searching via google would turn these up.

I have got mozilla m18 working but i am much more
comfortable in 476 and need https, which i don't think
mozilla has right now

Any pointers would be great!

Re: new install on ultra1/creator - cannot get video going

2001-06-20 Thread Howard Glynn
Many thanks for all the notes

As per various responses, the simple solution was to install
sun 24 bit xserver. My (wrong) assumption was that as a
fairly standard Sun box it would install from the CD without
any intervention on my part - I was choosing the "simple"
option and picking the X packages. Clearly too used to
Solaris or getting lazy :)

After that, a glorious looking Debian logo in 24bit colour
appeared on my 21" Sun Monitor running WindowMaker :-)
I'm really impressed

I suppose I can rebuild my S10 and S20 now as well :-O

Cheers

Howard

new install on ultra1/creator - cannot get video going

2001-06-19 Thread Howard Glynn

I'm attempting my first sparc/linux install on an ultra 1/167 w/Creator,
256Mb, Quad Ether card, 2 x 9Gb. I'm using Debian Sparc 2.2r3,
dated 27/04/01 (potato), I have a 3CD set from a linux vendor.

Thing is, I have installed this 3 times now, with reduced number of
packages each time, and each time it gets to the video configuration
during CD1 I get the message

"Your video card was successfully identified. The (( Cannot open
/proc/bus/pci/devices. You probably have an old kernel. Support for
the old Linux PCI interface should be coming soon )) server will
be installed"

[ double (( )) speculatively added by me ]

Linux installs correctly aside from the video config. I can't run X in
any shape or form. Can anbody suggest what I am missing. I am
a Solaris guy normally, please forgive my newbie question... :-)

I'm frustrated as I went through the archives and saw specific
posts about ultra 1 / creator on debian, so i assumed there would
not be a problem, it is a familiar configuration of machine

The only thing that was slightly weird during install was that I had
to specify my CDROM as /dev/sr0 rather than /dev/cdrom. Even
weirder is that I installed an old RedHat 6.0 SPARC on the
machine for the hell of it and the X server came up just fine???
However, I really want the up to date Debian release!

Help! :-)

Howard
