yes, if I do "boot floppy" I get a SILO: prompt, where I type:

  linux root=/dev/sda1

  and then I'm in debian, although I have nothing but basic commands. My
main problem is that I want a SILO: prompt on boot, and don't want to
have to manually boot off the floppy. I need to be able to boot off a
new kernel, because I'm missing the necessary libraries, it's telling me
I need a new kernel, and so I can't install anything until then. Perhaps
in a case like this, dselect should have a "apt-get new-kernel" or
something to that effect.

  Any help is appreciated,

 sorry, I did. The only change was:

   File and args: 1/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9
   Illegal Instruction
   Type help for more information
   ok

  I'm trying to get a SILO: prompt ;)
  When I turn on the machine, I get this:
   Boot device: /iommu/sbus/[EMAIL PROTECTED],40/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],80/[EMAIL PROTECTED],0:a  File
and args:
   vmlinuz
   Illegal Instruction
   Type help for more information
   ok

   and so as you can see, it never gets to a SILO: prompt.

  # fdisk
  Disk /dev/sda (sun disk label): 9 heads, 36 sectors, 1254 cylinders
  in expert mode, it also adds the line:
  SUN0207 cyl 1254 alt 2 hd 9 sec 36
  which is the type it autodetected (s then ? for auto).
  Again, this is an SS10.

  It was suggested I try boot -s, however boot -s brings up the same
menu as
   boot -h does.
  # ls /boot
  System.map-2.2.9   config-2.2.9 old.b silotftp.b
vmlinuz-2.0.35
  cd.b   first.b  second.b  ultra.b
vmlinuz-2.2.9

  If that helps? I had one of the debian developers look at it
physically, but he had no idea, as he's never tried to install on a
sparc.

  Cheers,

 I believe it is, it's a sparcstation10 with 80MB ram..

SILO probs

1999-09-27 Thread Kris Constable

  Still trying to get to a SILO prompt. Now when I power-cycle, I get
the following:

 Boot device: /iommu/sbus/[EMAIL PROTECTED],40/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],800/[EMAIL PROTECTED],0:a  File
and args:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9
Illegal Instruction
Type help for more information.

 I'd like to get this setup ASAP, as I'm stuck using a PC until then..

 Thanks in Advance,

   I tried "setenv boot-device /dev/sda1" at the ok prompt, but had no
luck. How do I specify for it to use the first partition on the first
harddrive in a sparcstation10?

   Thanks in Advance,

   Umm no?

   Why would I have a sun label? Using the rescue disk I can use the
 floppy's kernel to mount the file system. Wouldn't I need Solaris
 installed to make a Sun disk label? I guess what I'm wondering is why
 I'm not getting a "SILO:" prompt when I power cycle, and why I get no
 confirmation on success after manually running /sbin/silo that is setup
 properly now.

    Thanks in Advance,

SILO problems

1999-09-22 Thread Kris Constable

  Installing on a sparcstation two, I'm trying to reboot.
  In my /etc/silo.conf:

  partition=1
  root=/dev/sda1
  timeout=100
  image=vmlinuz
  label=Linux

  I then run: # /sbin/silo
   and it brings me back to a root prompt.
   However when I reboot, I don't even get the "S" from SILO, but the
followong error message:

   File and args:
   Illegal Instruction
   Type help for more information
   ok

  Any ideas?
