Re: Internet with Debian & Cayman 3220 router slower than with Windows & 56K modem

2003-01-04 Thread Luca Zampetti
no no - downloads are fast, navigation is painful

DCHP is set on the router & also on Linux (I believe at least, because Linux
installed itself from Debian's FTP server using the automatic DHCP routine of
the installer ... )

Fw: Internet with Debian & Cayman 3220 router slower than with Windows & 56K modem

2003-01-04 Thread Luca Zampetti
It is a real pain there is a program for setting the pppoe connection
that shows up in some kde menu, running it leads the OS to discover it has a
eth0 (which it already knows) and to nothing else because apparently the
interface is already in use by some connection (wonder which one, I have only
one ...) ... ifconfig does not help either ...

Why does the OS overwrite the resolv.conf file with the settings it "invented"
automatically during the installation instead of accepting my ISP provider IP
address for the DNS server?

Internet with Debian & Cayman 3220 router slower than with Windows & 56K modem

2003-01-02 Thread Luca Zampetti
Dear Debians,

I am connecting to internet with Debian for SPARC and a Cayman 3220H router.

I tested the line for the n-th time today and it is slower that with a 56K
modem (!!!) under Windows 98 ... how is it possible?

The resolv.conf file contains the IP address of my router as DNS nameserver -
I presume this is wrong, it was configured automatically during installation
of the OS in this way.

I tried to edit the resolv.conf with the ISP data, but when I reboot the
computer the edited file gets overwritten with the old configuration data -
or what?

Is it possible to tune this thing better to internet?

Thanks for your attention.

Lou

32 MB RAM memory module for SPARC 5

Hello all,

I have a 32 MB RAM memory module for SPARC 5 to sell for 10 dollars ... anybody
interested?

Best regards - Lou

Re: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs

2002-12-17 Thread Luca Zampetti
Hello all,

Reading Marc's message I took out 128 MB from my SPARC 5, with which I have
been struggling to install Debian Linux from CDROM.

The installation went well - it was the 12th attempt -, although I was not able
to use consistently the CDROM during the whole process, only the first part
until DHCP to the FTP server ... dbootstrap generates error messages about
corrupt files while attempting to download from the CDROM all the time,
sometimes even from some Debian FTP mirrors ... can Debian Linux handle at all
more than 128 of RAM? I wanted to install Linux in order to learn Oracle and I
believe that Oracle will not work with less than 256 MB of RAM ...

Best regards,

Lou

2002-12-04 Thread Luca Zampetti
It is an old SPARC 5 with original Sun CD ROM device & hard disks ...
supposed to be used as a torture instrument for learning unix & linux ...
that does not help ... hello mr. Adam Di Carlo, aren't you the burner of
this thing?

What do you think about it?

Did you cook it too fast?

Re: SS20 2.4 SMP, irregular boot freezes and swapon segfaults

2002-12-04 Thread Luca Zampetti
Yes, I know that this has nothing to do with you - but I am installing
debian linux for sparc on a SPARC machine and I am getting all the time
during the decompression of the files from the CDROM error messages about
"corrupt files" like this

file: /instmnt/pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.9.21.sparc.deb was corrupt

and if you hit enter

cannot dowload dpkg

and then the installation program breaks up.

Suggestions?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Luca Zampetti
