Netinst fails for Sparc

2006-09-13 Thread Pete Clarke
Hi there,

I am trying to install a Netra T1 200 via netboot.
The machine has no cdrom so I am using a tftp server with dhcp to
bootstrap the system.
All goes well, until I point it at my local debian mirror (i386,sparc,hppa).

It gets the release file, and some of the installer files, but fails at 20%.
The log for my local http mirror is:

I have checked the files on the mirror, and
/debian//pool/main/d/ddetect/hw-detect-full_1.14_all.udeb exists, and is
readable.
I assume it's something to do with the mirror, but I don't know what -
i386 clients boot OK, and updates are not a problem - it just seems to be
whilst installing a sparc client.
If I change mirror to point to somewhere else, it works .. I have tried
removing the ddetect directory and reimaging, but to no avail..
Any pointers?

Cheers,

Pete.

Not that I know of - I believe that they use video cards without an
onboard bios - most PC type cards have a bios.

That's why you get to pay lots more for a Sun compatible PCI video card :-)

My U10's and U5's use an LSI, Sun scsi adaptor - abour £30 from ebay and
bootable.
The small SCSI/PATA boot disk is a good alternative - you shouldn't need
to boot these boxes too often anyway ;-)

Please reply to the list rather than to me personally - I do read the
posts and it allows others to benefit from your wisdom.

I never said it would be fast, I was attempting to provide an alternative
to the 120GB limit with the internal IDE. I personally use an internal
SCSI card with 72GB, 15k drives for storage - quick, not the cheapest but
works "out of the box".

The old SCSI drives are probably going to be faster than the internal IDE
- the U5's IDE subsystem is terribly slow.

That would probably be cheaper, and fairly quick - does OBP recognise the
SATA controllers as bootable devices?
I haven't played with SATA so have limited knowledge in that area - SCSI
is my "thing". :-)

It all depends on what the OP wants to use the box for - I believe that's
the question he was askingas a developer I see some good potential in
the little U5's, and 10's - a [333/440]/1GB U5/10 still makes a bloody
good development workstationquick enough for most tasks.

Pete.

Re: Debian on a Sun Ultra 5

2006-03-22 Thread Pete Clarke
I was using it as simply a second workstation while my main
workstation was
down, and one that my girlfriend could use while I had my laptop
and tablet
with me. However, I wouldn't mind putting it to more well-deserved
uses,
like an LDAP server, backup server, db server, etc. So, I was
wondering what
all the sparc experts out there think an Ultra 5 would be well
suited for :)

I was using one as a management box until recently - installed Sarge
and nagios - it was plenty fast enough for the job.

I have also used one as a slave DNS/Mail server.

In the case of a backup server, I have a connor raid box I was
considering
connecting, but I think the hardware limitation on this particular
box is
12GB, so it might not be worthwhile (I do some dv editing on my
main machine,

so I have several hundred GB's of data).

The IDE limitation is 120GB (ish) - however, this does not mean it
wouldn't be a useful backup box - stick a USB card in, very cheap
these days, and attach an external drive.
Or pick up a cheap SCSI card - about £20 from eBay and one of the 7
or 12 slot external enclosures and have yourself a nice RAID backup :-)

The Ultra 5's (and 10's) still make remarkable good workhorses in
these days of multi-core, multi-gigahertz machines they make
wonderful development boxes too...

HTH.

Cheers,

Pete.

Re: Ultra 10 processor support

2006-03-20 Thread Pete Clarke

don't get the 440. we had about 100 of them, 90+% of which failed
within 18 months.

I have had no problems with the 5 or so I have running here.luck of the
draw I guess - which applies to pretty much every component part.

the 333's, on the other hand, are still going strong.

I must admit the 333 I have feels just as quick as the 440's - all have 1GB
ram which helps enormously.

in general though, they're a pretty slow machine. the IDE controller
doesn't help either.

I would concur with the idea of getting a SCSI card - all my Sun boxes have
SCSI cards - only about £30 from eBay for a reasonable one - makes all the
difference - the U10 with 440/1GB/72GB SCSI doesn't feel much slower than my
U60 Dual 450/2GB/72GB SCSI on desktop tasks...certainly faster than it
should given it's age :-)

Re: Ultra 10 processor support

2006-03-20 Thread Pete Clarke

#I have a 333 Ultra 10. I was just wondering whether it is possible to add
#more processors. I think the max speed processor I can get is 440, but 2
#processors (or more) would be good.

This is not necessarily the place to ask this, a quick Google would answer
this particular question ... but never mind..

The Ultra 10 is a uniprocessor machine, the 440 is the fastest CPU the board
will take.

The Ultra 1, 5, 10 (the 5 and 10 share the same motherboard) and 30 were all
uniprocessor.
The Ultra 2 and Ultra 60 were both dual processor machines around at
(roughly) the same time.

So, the answer would be no - you can't add any extra CPU's to the U10 - it
only has one processor socket.

Cheers,

Pete.

Ultra 5 Issues

2005-12-09 Thread Pete Clarke

Hi all,

I have a Sun Ultra 5 which has some "issues" - I want to install Sarge on it
(I have another 2 U10's with Sarge so I am conversant with the
proceedure)

However, wen booting, the console port appears inactive - when I attach a
console

cable and no kb/mse I get nothing.
I did attach a kb and monitor and changed the input-device and output-device
to ttya (foolishly) and now I get nothing either way.

What can I do to reset these values?

Cheers,

Pete.

Re: NFS mount failing

2005-07-13 Thread Pete Clarke

Hi all,

I actually solved it by stop-starting the NFS server.
It appears that, when I re-installed "oracle" it stopped recognising it. One
/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart later and it all works fine.
I didn't think to stop-start before as the server appeared to be working
fine...

Thanks to everyone for the help,

Pete.

NFS mount failing

2005-07-13 Thread Pete Clarke
Hi there,

When I try to mount an NFS share from a Debian Linux server to a Sun Netra
T1 running Solaris 9, I get the following error:

bash-2.05# mount -F nfs adelaide:/export/backup/server/oracle /mnt/backup
nfs mount: adelaide:/export/backup/server/oracle: Permission denied

The server's syslog contains:

The exports file looks like:

Other machines can mount no problem, it's just the Solaris box that has

Any ideas?
