I am barrister Steve Okolo ( attorney at law), I represent Alhaji
Ishmaila Gwarzo estates. Alhaji Gwarzo was the chief security advicer of
the then military leader of this country(Nigeria) in the person
of Late General Sani Abacha who died on the 8th of June 1998. With the
advent of a new democratic dispensation in the country under the
leadership of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd), my client has come under
severe persecution due to the sensitive position he held in the last
military regime, presently he is under house arrest restricted only to
the confines of his village.

The main purpose of this mail is to intimate you of a business proposal
that might be of interest to you. My client has informed me of the
existence of funds deposited with a security company abroad. This fund
came about as part of security votes that were allocated to my client's
portfolio during his tenure as chief security advicer to the then
president. What happened was that he had part of the funds transferred
from the vaults of the Central Bank Of Nigeria to this security outfit
with the aim of purchasing arms and ammunitions for the personal
security outfit of the then president. But before the purchase could
take place the president died. my client has deceided to keep this for
himself as all his properties has been confisticated by the present
regime. But due to his incarceration he cannot travel out and effect the
change of possession to his benefit.

I have been mandated by my client to source for a foreign partner that
can help him facilitate the change of possession. the deposit

The funds in question is USD33.6M (Thirty-Three Million, Six Hundred

interest to you, you can reach me through my e-mail address so that we
can go through the rudiments of this endeavour.

I remain most obliged.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone on the list knows of any statistics that
show LINUX's growth as a server VS Micro$oft Windows. My VP who is a rare
management type (he really does do some thinking) wants to push to get LINUX
as our default server configuration, but is having trouble with the brain
washed executive staff that is true to the mighty Microsoft monopoly. I
would appreciate any information.

I was in the same boat and discovered a very surprising fix on my Sun4m
configuration, I do not guarantee it will work for Sparc10 systems:
At the OK prompt I tried "boot cdrom" 20-30 times with all three install
disks
and got similar results to you. What finally worked made little sense, but
it
worked. I changed the default boot command to "cdrom", and simply typed
"boot". I
know, I know, this is "the same thing", but it worked the first time with
the
cdrom as the default device. All I had to do was choose "s" for scsi when
the
prompt came and I got the install screen instead of init errors. Of course,
I did
have to take the cd out and reset the default to disk on reboot. I have a
second
600LM and it reacted exactly the same way...

Good luck.

I've never seen one that has trouble with non-SUN OS's. Never heard of
such a thing.

I suspect you just need to read the documents from the install images.
Quite simply, you need to do "boot cdrom".

As I said before, if you explained specifically what you have done, the
end result, and the result you expected, then you might get some help.

None of these explain the problem you are having. If you expected your
problem to be generic and for ppl on this list to magically deduce the
cause, then you were mistaken.

Here's what I use to generate CDs nightly (with a local sparc mirror,
you probably want to use apt-spy to find a nearby mirror if you don't
have your own). The following snippets would generate woody-sparc-1:

#!/bin/sh
cd /some/local/directory/for/jigdo/files
wget --mirror --no-parent -q --no-directories -Awoody*-1* \
  http://us.cdimage.debian.org/jigdo-area/current/jigdo/sparc/
/usr/bin/jigdo-mirror

and in ~/.jigdo-mirror:

jigdoDir="/some/local/directory/for/jigdo/files"
imageDir="/some/local/directory/for/cd/images"
tmpDir="/some/local/directory/for/jigdo/tmp"
debianMirror="file:/home/ftp/debian"
nonusMirror="file:/home/ftp/debian/non-US"
exclude='_NONUS'
jigdoFile="jigdo-file --cache=$tmpDir/jigdo-cache.db --cache-expiry=1w
--report=noprogress --no-check-files"
maxMissing=100
filesPerFetch=10
wgetOpts="--passive-ftp --no-directories --non-verbose"

...where all the directories mentioned are on the same partition.

I have take all your advice and decided to try Debian for Sparc, I
download the 6 sprc jigdo files and then I get stuck what do you enter in
this prompt:
The jigdo file refers to files stored on Debian mirrors. Please
choose a Debian mirror as follows: Either enter a complete URL

People keep asking this question and I have always kept my mouth shut
because I feel, as Joshua apparently does, that it is a fairly loaded and/or
political and/or subjective question. But this morning I have decided to
speak my mind. Please indulge me in a bit of history; I feel it's crucial to
the point once I actually get there :)

In my larval days, like almost everyone else at the time, I ran Slack on x86
hardware. But for the past several years I have completely eschewed Intel
hardware completely, using various SPARC, PPC, and m68k machines to get my
work done, and I have run Linux on all of them.

My first non-x86 install was Debian Slink on a SPARCstation LX, and I have
run Debian on every machine since then, but I have also played with RedHat,
Yellow Dog, SuSE, and NetBSD.

With the exception of Debian, every other distro felt distinctly
"second-class", with some packages being unreliable compared to their x86
cousins, or just missing entirely. Installations were often rough and/or
freakish compared to x86 (and I know this is largely inescapable (especially
on old-world PPC) but Debian always felt dang smooth in comparison).
Sometimes things just wouldn't work, and there was no sense from the
documentation that it ever would.

In short: Debian rules, given that you are the sort of person who doesn't
want to be coddled by a shiny install/management system (which I personally
feel is a waste of time and misguided effort) but instead wants to get work
done, can read and think for yourself, and wants a distro that "feels" the
same on any given piece of hardware.
