RE: Netra X1 install problem/oddity
I've still got a few Netra X1's running. From my notes: First thing after booting the tftpimage jump to a shell and: modprobe -r dmfe modprobe -r tulip modprobe tulip Then you can continue the install. After it reboots to the new system: echo 'blacklist dmfe' > /etc/modprobe.d/dmfe-blacklist If all else fails you could track down and delete dmfe.ko but you'd have to remember to do that after every kernel upgrade. The above method worked fine on my production boxes. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: netra X1 tftp boot..and install
Oh! And remember that the tulip driver will discover the ethernet port in reverse order. Net1 on the server is eth0 and Net0 is eth1. That ones bit me a couple times.
RE: netra X1 tftp boot..and install
Nevermind. The image at http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-sparc/current/images/ boots fine. I'm doing an install right now.

>From memory (and a quick look back at this thread http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2002/debian-sparc-200210/msg00198.html), the problem with installing on a Netra X1 is that the drivers for the ethernet port isn't compiled into the kernel and there is no way to copy the drivers over after the system boots. I went through a lot to get a working image (which I still have somewhere... I hope.) The steps to make it work were here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2002/debian-sparc-200210/msg00203.html

Re: Re: Sparc netinst
What have you done so far? You said you have a TFTP server (which one are you using?) Do you have an RARP server? If not, you can find one at http://www.panix.com/~perin/#rarp (look near the bottom of the page. It's supposed to work on Win2k but I can't get it to work on my XP box.) What I normally do when I'm trying to net boot a new system is: 1. setup arp and rarp per the Debian docs. 2. try to netboot the machine. 3. check the TFTP logs to get the correct name for the bootimage (I never get it right until I look at the logs.) 4. copy/rename/link/whatever the bootimage so it has that name. 5. try to netboot the machine.
Re: starting Linux through tftp
It looks like it's supported (sort of), but I've never tried it. Section 6.8 at http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/sparc/ch-partitioning.en.html has a small amount of info.
Re: Netra X1 install?
I got it to work. I installed binutils-sparc and while it doesn't appear to work for the version of vmlinuz in kernel-image-2.4.19-sun4u_27_sparc.deb (same sun4cdm error from tilo), I did get it to work with the vmlinuz-2.4.18 and modules that got installed on this Ultra 10. Thanks for the help. Now I don't have to load Solaris on these X1s. :)

I've got debian installed on an Ultra 10 and I still get this with everything I try: Root image packed size = 1161538 nm: vmlinux: no symbols Converting vmlinux (sun4cdm) to a.out: PT 0 Entry: Loadable to 0x40[0x36d4e8] from 0x0[0x2c62c0] align 0x10 Compressing vmlinux.raw: vmlinux.raw: 56.1% nm: vmlinux: no symbols Sizes (sun4cdm): raw size = 2892480 packed size = 1268728 root address = ERROR: Original size and root address must be specified for Sun4c

I think TILO may be assuming sun4cdm when I try this on a Sparcstation-5. I'll try to get Debian on an Ultra and see if I can get it to work there.

So I tried to do this: # zcat vmlinuz > vmlinux # tilo root.bin vmlinux I get the following: nm: vmlinux: no symbols Converting vmlinux (sun4cdm) to a.out: PT 0 Entry: Loadable to 0x40[0x36d4e8] from 0x0[0x2c62c0] align 0x10 Compressing vmlinux.raw: vmlinux.raw: 56.1% nm: vmlinux: no symbols Sizes (sun4cdm): raw size = 2892480 packed size = 1268728 root address = Root image packed size = 1191009 ERROR: Original size and root address must be specified for Sun4c I've checked 3 times to make sure I'm using the vmlinuz from the sun4u directory. I'm going to assume that this is because I'm trying to do this on an SS5. I don't have any sun4u machines running linux. Any ideas? If nothing else I'll try to install Debian on an Ultra 5 that's not doing anything sometime next week.

The latest image I've tried was dated 05-Oct-2002 from http://auric.debian.org/~bcollins/disks-sparc/current/sun4u/tftpboot.img ifconfig -a only shows the loopback interface and I don't see the anything listed in the dmesg output about ethernet ports. I didn't realize that the small image is newer. I'll try that real quick too.
Netra X1 install?
None of the tftp images I've found so far seem to have support for the Netra X1 ethernet controllers compiled in. This leaves me unable to do much more than format the drive. Does anyone know where I can find an image that will let me do a network install?
