I doubt it will build. There was a port of openoffice.org 1.0.3 to
Sparc/linux floating around that a guy know as "The Shrink" did for
Aurora. I made a patch from his source and posted it to the Aurora
Sparc list. Here is a link to it:

http://www.dslextreme.com/users/tomduffy/openoffice-sparc.diff.bz2

Once applying this patch, you should be able to build 1.0.3.

AFAIK, there is no version of openoffice.org that works on sparc/linux
yet. Please correct me if I am wrong (and point me to the packages!)
There was one guy on the aurora list who said he managed to get RedHat's
version of OO.o to compile (with hacks), but it crashed on startup...

Well, I am able to send a break signal on the serial console, hit the
prom, and go from there.

I don't use a keyboard on my blade 100, but I thought that this might be
at least a good data point. And you can use a serial console if needed.

I wonder if it because I am upgrading from a previous version of

As far as I can tell, the type 6 keyboard is actually just a standard PC
keyboard. I can plug it into a USB on a PC and it works fine. Looks
like you are coming from France, so I dunno about the French layout, but
the U.S. layout for PC's (standard 101) works fine with that keyboard.

The other option if you cannot get the CD to boot is to use the
tftpboot.img and do a net boot. The UltraSparc FAQ does a good job of
explaining how this works. You will just need another linux box (sparc,
ia32, whatever) attached to the same subnet (maybe same switch?) as the
Ultra 5 you are installing onto...

well, you can set the input-device in the prom to keyboard, but I think
it fails over to serial console anyways. don't know how to stop it...\

this webpage has a bunch of info about openboot:

http://www.itworld.com/AppDev/616/UIR951001openboot/

you can get rid of these messages by simply removing the associated
lines in /etc/inittab 1:234:blahblahblah... for 1 through 6 and that
should get rid of the respawn messages. if you use a serial line, make
sure to uncomment the S0 line.

I would just recommend hooking up a serial MUX to your cluster and have
serial consoles on all the boxen. you can also use a vt and walk around
with this to plug into your machine when needed...

you will need to install using the debian woody distro. potato will
*not* work on the blade 100

and right now, the installer is broken for woody as well. what you
really want is an older (early summer) tftpboot.img to boot off of that
and go from there. that is how I have been installing on my blades.
the other option is to install woody on some other sparc that works (a
ultrasparc 1, 2, 5 or 10 should be fine) and then copy the disk over to
the blade...

I can email you copy of the old tftpboot.img because I don't think it is
accessible on the Debian ftp site anymore.

this is a big mess right now and until Ben gets his new sparc64 woody
images out, you will need lots of workarounds. once that disk goes out,
it should be way easier to install woody.

ls and du and that kinda stuff work ok. still have not gotten any X
apps working...always errs saying cannot connect to display :0 or some

uname is cute to run :)

the docs are sparse, but correct. all fell into place for me once I got
the right libraries and directory structure into place (used solaris 2.7
stuff).

If you look in the kernel source code, only about half of the solaris
sys calls are implemented, so don't expect anything too complicated to

yes, fdisk (and thus the debian setup) can create a SunOS compatible
disk label from scratch. use the "s" option and choose "custom" -- you
can normally accept all the defaults, and have a sun disk label when you
are done.

make sure you have a sun partition table. make sure partition 3 is a
"Whole Disk". and that swap is not on partition 1. other than that,
you can configure any sizes you desire.

if you let fdisk auto partition the disk, it should stick / on part1,

well, the version of the package (11.1) differs from the version of the
library. gnucash wanst libgtkhtml14 package version 11.1 or more.
libgtkhtml14 will install version 14 of the library. libgtkhtml15 will
install version 15 of libgtkhtml which has a different abi than 14 and
that is why it is in a different package. you should be able to install

yeah, you really wnat to compress the vmlinux to a vmlinuz...you can do
this by issuing the command

gzip -c vmlinux > vmlinuz

otherwise, the image will probably be too big and silo won't be able to
load it into memory. silo is *very* picky about how big the kernel
image is. in fact, trying to compile frame pointers, xfs, or many
drivers into the kernel (not as modules) will push it over the maximum
size. I really wish this would be fixed...

well, this symlink seems to be pointing to wrong kernel. or was that a
typo? (2.4.7 should be 2.4.9 if you installed that package).

I would make sure that your silo package is also up to date. and what
does your /etc/silo.conf look like?

what does "wont reboot" mean? what is the error...how far does it get?

also, are you on a sun4u arhictecture machine? if you are on a 32bit
machine, you should stick to the 2.2 kernel for now.

well, I would suggest nuking the partition table and created a new sun
label...choosing the defaults for custom will create 1, 2, and 3. then
you can delete 1 and 2 and make them the correct size for you, maybe
adding part 4.

if you have data on these drives, then you could try to match the
numbers up exactly and try to remount the partitions once you
reconfigure. I would backup your important stuff before attempting
this, though :)

the r flag means the partition is mountable...not an issue. you can
turn it off and on using the "c" option in fdisk if you do not like it
there. i don't think it is used under linux.

you can go into expert mode (x) and verify (v) the partition table is ok
maybe?...

The whole point of having the third partition being the "Whole Disk" is
that it should be the whole disk. Make it go from 0 to 16706. Don't
mount this partition.

Then create a /dev/hda4 with the rest of the space > 8842 and use that

kernel panic from loadkeys

2001-08-07 Thread Thomas Duffy
I accidently told the debconf tool to use the uk sun type 5 keyboard
during install (of latest debian unstable today) on a Sun Ultra10.

This has caused the dpkg --configure of console-common to fail with the
following error:

Setting up console-common (0.7.3) ...
Looking for keymap to install:
sunt5-uk
/usr/sbin/install-keymap: line -32: 269 Killed

ok, don't know why loadkeys is failing, but if I try it again, I get a
kernel panic (taken from the logs as I don't have a serial console
hooked up right now):

I don't think loadkeys should cause the kernel to panic and I would run
ksymoops over this, but it seems the System.map from the debian kernel
(2.4.7) is not installed under /boot/System.map-2.4.7 where it is
looking for it (is this a bug in the package?).

So, first off, how do I get the configure of console-common to not want
to load sunt5-uk? I have tried running "install-keymap NONE" but this
does not work...

Secondly, how do I stop this from panic'ing?

thanks,

first off, make sure you have tftpd and rarp on in your server machine
(inetd on some distros, xinetd on others).

then, you will need to have the mac address of the blade correspond to
the ip address you want to give it in your /etc/ethers

the blade will get the ip address based off its mac address and then
request a file from the server based off its IP address in HEX. this
file should be in your configured tftpboot folder. so, if my IP address
is 10.2.4.194, the file the blade will request on my setup is
/tftpboot/0A0204C2 which I have as a symlink to tftpboot.img from ben
collins current directory.

at the ok prompt, you would type:

ok boot net:10.2.4.191

where 10.2.4.191 is the IP address of the rarp/tftpboot server.

email if this does not work for you...

serial console on blade100

2001-07-27 Thread Thomas Duffy
I am having a little trouble getting kernel messages to print to the
serial line on my blade100.

I am used to x86, so I might have to do something different on sparc so
that is what I am asking. On x86, if you pass (at the LILO prompt)
"console=tty1 console=ttyS0", it will print kernel messages to both the
VGA and serial lines. The last console= message it gets will be where
the /dev/console will print to, so initscript message will get sent
there.

I have tried this on sparc and it only prints out messages to the VGA no
matter what order I pass the console= messages to. If I only give it
one console=ttyS0, the boot hangs very early in the boot sequence.

Maybe this all has to do with how the openboot figures out what is the
console...if there is a keyboard plugged in, it throws messages to the
VGA, and if not, to the serial. In that case, is there a way to change
the prom to print out to the serial line (so, like SILO gets printed
there as well) as well as the VGA?

thanks,

should work. I slapped in my blade about a couple of weeks ago. I use
debian testing as stable does not work. so, you will need to do a net

Debian 2.2r3 on Sun Enterprise 3500

2001-06-21 Thread Thomas Duffy
I have an Enterprise 3500 machine that I am trying to install Debian on.

Unfortunately, it does not seem to be able to access the scsi drives
during install. It sees the CDROM, but none of the six scsi drives in
the system. No errors about unrecognized scsi controller or anything.
I can boot it with nfs root, but this is not ideal.

The same thing happens on SuSE 7.1 and RedHat 6.2.

Anybody had any luck getting Debian installed on a 3500?

Thanks,
