Fresh New potato boot disks from the 2.2.6 boot floppies
Today I tried the 2.2.6 boot floppy build of Sun4cdm Rescue.bin on an LX. I have the exact same "Caught in an endless loop!" as described for the SS1, Sun4c below. The LX I tried has a floppy, SUN+ external CDROM (Sony CDU-561), ROM Rev 2.9 + 32Mb RAM. 850Mb Quantum HD. The large fonts look good here. Re-tried on Sun4c again with the same result. Will download boot floppy images again to see if I have a problem with the disks themselves. Any suggestions? Peter Myers Quick test only: Sun4c disk install SparcStation1, 16 Mb Ram, Boot Prom version 1, 540 Mb IBM HD, framebuffer cg6 Compared to last 2 versions of potato very smooth install till "Install Operating System Kernel and Modules" Asks for Rescue.bin, then Driver-1.bin then "message saying analysing next step" which sends me back to "Install Operating System Kernel and Modules". Caught in endless loop! Didn't have time to play more. Pages load at same very slow rate (16 seconds max) with large font as reported before. Small fonts may be better. BLOCK Cursor consistantly one line high at menu selection. Peter Myers
Re: Fresh New potato boot disks from the 2.2.6 boot floppies
I'm having this problem also. My machine is a SS1+, 28 MB RAM, CG3 fb, ROM Revision 1.3 using a serial console (no monitor or keyboard attached). I get "Data Access Exception" errors when trying to boot tftpboot.img over the network, but booting the sun4cdm/linux-a.out (the 2000-02-04 version) works OK (providing nfsroot= and ip=, of course). The install process goes smoothly up to the "Install Operating System Kernel and Modules." At this point I select NFS as the method to install the files, configure the network, enter the server address, and tell it to "list" the possible directories containing sun4cdm/disks-1.44/rescue.bin. It finds the correct directory, and I select it. Since it's over NFS, rescue.bin is copied over to local first, then installed. As this dialog box disappears and the next one is about to appear, an error flies by containing something like "ioctl: LOOP_CLR_FD: Device or resource busy." The process is continued with the next dialog box displayed saying that /instmnt/debian/sun4cdm/drivers.tgz is being installed. After this is complete, I'm returned to the main selection screen and the next step is still "Install Operating System Kernel and Modules." `dmesg' doesn't show anything unordinary. If I choose the NFS directory "manual"ly, instead of "list," a little more information is revealed. During the rescue.bin and drivers.tgz installation, a dialog box comes up with the title "File error!" and contains the following text: "There was a problem installing the Drivers from <15>Oct 25 23:33:41 dbootstrap[17]: ioctl: LOOP_CLR_FD: Device or resource busy /drivers.tgz" (Yes, my clock isn't set correctly. :) Choosing returns to the main selection screen as before, of course. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks! I forgot to add that the rescue disk for sun4c from 01/15 had a problem after mounting the root file system which doesn't show in this new set. -- Hermano Cabral

If you didn't have problems before, then check to make sure I didn't > break anything :) Machine: Sparc 1+ w/ fbtwo frame buffer rescue disk for sun4cdm: Loads and uncompress the kernel, but hangs after displaying the message "Booting Linux...". This is the same behavior as for the set of disks from 01/15. rescue disk for sun4c: Loads and uncompress the kernel, and boots ok. Installation seems to be ok (I didn't proceed further than mounting the swap partition since this machine is my work machine and I didn't want to mess up with it). I think the problem is with the support for the fbtwo frame buffer. I remember I had to recompile the kernel 2.2.14 with a different console font (the only modification to the config file /boot/config-2.2.14) to make it boot. The original kernel didn't work (it would also hang with the messsage "Booting Linux..."). In another sparc 1+ equipped with a cgthree frame buffer, the same rescue disk for sun4cdm as above loads and uncompress the kernel ok but still has a problem after booting, although it no longer hangs. The problem happens after mounting the root system, when init is starting. There are a couple of oops, and "cannot handle kernel paging request" messages, but the instalation process continues anyway, although I no longer have access to any virtual terminal other than the first one. The rescue disk for sun4c seems to perform flawlessly in this machine too. As a last attempt, I mounted the rescue disk for sun4cdm and wrote the custom compiled kernel on the top of the one originally there. The kernel now is uncompressed and booted, with no oops whatsoever. The instalation proceeded smoothly. As an added bonus, the screen updates are much faster than with the other rescue disks, albeit with a smaller font. I hope this provides some useful information. Cheers, -- Hermano Cabral

Not too successful here on an IPX; the tftpboot.img gets as far as "Booting Linux..." and stops cold (I have to power-cycle the box, since it no longer responds to keystrokes). I also dd'd the sun4c rescue.bin to a floppy, but the IPX doesn't want to have any, and complains: Can't read disk label. Can't open Sun disk label package Can't open boot device Remade the floppy with a block size of 512 bytes, and this time it got as far as the "Welcome" screen and "Press to boot!", but then failed with Read error on block 73 Unknown /linux image format Same result with the 4cdm image. Tried the tftp image with a Sparc Station 2; it stops just as the IPX had done, at the "Booting Linux..." message. Also tried copying the 4c rescue.bin to / and booting it directly, but it fails with the message "Unknown /rescue.bin image format". (I don't know whether this is even intended to work, but gave it a try anyway.) Same with the 4cdm rescue.bin image. Sorry! John Chapman[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Here's a new set of boot disks that fixes quite a few problems with the older set. Anyone who had problems before, check these to see if they fix them. If you didn't have problems before, then check to make sure I didn't break anything :) ftp://marcus.debian.net/pub/debian/disks-sparc/2000-02-04 http://marcus.debian.net/debian/disks-sparc/2000-02-04 You will have to play some path games since this doesn't quite follow the normal setup of the real archive. -- ---===-=-==-=---==-=-- / Ben Collins -- ...on that fantastic voyage... -- Debian GNU/Linux \ ` [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ' `---=--===-=-=-=-===-==---=--=---'
