Install Hangs

2006-08-28 Thread Chris Burwell
I am trying to reinstall Debian on a Sun Netra X1 server. The problem
is, when I get to the "install base system" portion, the installer gets
to about 6% and then it hangs.

I have to power off the server and then start over again. Sometimes I
will also get a "file corrupt" error. I have checked the CD-ROM, but it
checks out. I have re-burnt the CD, and I have even tried a version of
Ubuntu server, same results. In addition I have tried a different CD-ROM
drive, but I get the same results.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

- Chris Burwell

Sarge install hangs on Ultra2

2005-12-20 Thread Robert Franke

Hi,

I try to install Debian Sarge on an Ultra2 machine but the installer hangs
when it loads the module sd_mod during hardware detection for CD-ROM access.
Before that it beeps several times, probably to indicate that it has found
some scsi device?

Do you have any suggestions? This is my first experience with Sun machines,
so I am kind of lost.
Btw, I did not figure out how to run the expert mode install with the
official Sarge Sparc image. Is it missing?

Thanks!

Robert

Sarge CD install hangs...

2005-07-04 Thread Dale Scheetz
I have this sparc ultra 5 360 that I bought from Kachina Tech way back
when. (They are no longer in business...) The machine has been in
"moth balls" for several years while I waited on a project. Well,
Sarge was released and I bought a set of install disks from copyleft
(Thanks Phil!) and with a bit of reading (thanks for the reminders
about how to get into OpenBoot, although on my machine it is
Ctrl-Break followed by A ;-) I was able to get the install started

I'm able to tell it to boot from the cdrom and that seems to work, and
the first few screens wizz by taking all the defaults. Then it checks
hardware, the CD, some more hardware etc. and finally presents a
screen that tells me I have multiple Ethernet ports, and which one
should it use. Now I thought this was going to be a CD install, but
imagine my surprise when I couldn't even move down the list of
choices, and there were no active buttons, although the "go back"
button was partially constructed.

I seems to hang there reliably, although the number of "timer bars"
clocking various activities changes from attempt to attempt.

The Ethernet built in to the original system failed long ago (which is
why I put the machine in mothballs) but recently I came across a
fellow who had a 4 port Ethernet cart to sell at reasonable price, so
I bought it. I suspect that something about having the card installed
is crashing the installation script, but don't really have a clue. It
does seem to be able to see the CD ok as one of the timer bars is
titled "Scanning ... " with various archive pool path names from the
CD.

When I remove the card, the dialog about choosing between ethernet
ports no longer appears, and several other things occur before the
message: Network autoconfiguration failed, with a description about
how the DHCP server may be slow or the hardware not working... Again
the install is completely hung with an incomplete rendering of the
dialog box.

I'm not hooked up on any of these ports, and my expectation was that I
was doing a CD installation, so why is it looking at these ports at
all, but more important why does this hang the installation script (at
two different locations in the logic path)?

Anyone else have similar issues, or know what I should do about this one?

Luck,

Dwarf

I have the exact same problem on an Ultra 5. I have tried the forums at
sun.com but still havent found an answer. I would like to see if anyone on
this list has an idea about this.

SunBlade 100 install hangs

2004-01-17 Thread Marc Horowitz
I just tried following the instructions posted here

a few weeks ago, and I cannot make it work.

When I netboot either the 4 Dec or 5 Dec tftpboot.img from
phunnypharm, the OBP (version 4.10.6) says

Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...

Then hangs forever. If I try to use

or the 5 Dec variant, either the linux or rescue target, I get

Uncompressing image...

Decompression error: uncompressed image too long - wouldn't fit into
destination

Error loading /dists/stable/main/disks-sparc/current/sparc64/vmlinuz

mentions a 2.4.23 iso at
, but
it isn't there.

What else should I try to get some sort of install going?

Marc
