Solaris 8 vs Debian Ultrasparc: running tinydns on netra t1 105 on the same box (tinydns compiled with gcc 2.95 on both OS's with no special flags, just 'make && make setup check') Linux exactly doubled the number of queries/sec as measured with "queryperf" from the BIND9 tarball. This is probably the extreme since tinydns does a lot of context switching (stat the db once for every query answered), and linux is reportedly much better at context switching than solaris. Of course in solaris's defense, I've upgraded heavily loaded 220R's running solaris 8 to 420R's (just move the disks to a box with 2x the memory and processors) and the CPU utlization and load average exactly halved as a result. Solaris scales just about linearly with more processors, where linux (2.4 anyways) does not. Best tool for the job I always say ;) That said I've moved a lot of my infrastructure from solaris/sparc to debian linux (both x86 and sparc) and never looked back. In fact UE2's and other older boxes seem to be able to do a hell of a lot more work running linux. -- Nate Campihttp://www.campin.net

The commerical products I work on use 64-bit kernel drivers and 32-bit user-mode as well. For most situations 32-bit user mode is probably better due to the smaller memory requiements. > runs on the Ultrasparc? It *feels* a lot better working on the machines. One other thing. I've heard that the performance of Ultrasparc Linux is not expected to be as good as Solaris because user-mode Sparc binaries run in a 32 bit mode. How do you feel about how well Linux runs on the Ultrasparc?

In fact, I didn't put it first. It's third because that's where solaris put it. I don't have the machine, so I cannot reprint it here. I know that I only had two partitions, 1 and 3. 1 is most of the disk and 3 has about 1G for swap. The only other thing I can think of trying is the tftp image you suggest. Re: Debian 3.0 on Netra X1, installs but won't run
Not that this is much help, but I've had all kinds of problems getting debian installed onto netra t1's. I just do all my installations on a UE2 and move the disks over to my 220Rs, 420Rs and netra t1s. It always works perfectly. In fact I have a E6500 I might ship out a woody disk to the datacenter it's in and ask them to boot it while I sit on the console port remotely. I would be pretty cool to see 20-some processors on a debian linux box ;) On Thu, Jun 12, 2003 at 09:43:37AM -0700, Marc Singer wrote: > On Thu, Jun 12, 2003 at 09:28:25AM -0700, Patrick Morris wrote: > > Have you tried it as neither a master nor a slave? It's not an IDE thing, it's a CDROM thing. Some just don't want to be masters. I don't know why they even have jumpers. Others are OK being masters. I think most recent drives can handle being masters, but I could be wrong. I've done more exploration. Someone suggested that the problem is that the CDROM is an IDE master. When I change the CDROM to a slave, the Netra X1 refuses to recognize it. In other words, the Netra *requires* that the CDROM be an IDE master. I notice that both activity lights on the network interfaces flash when the driver is loaded. Is this expected behavior? Nope, it's not a Sparc thing, it's an IDE thing. Maybe it depends on the motherboard, but just last week I was building a OpenBSD box out of spare parts that wouldn't boot because the CD on the second IDE was jumpered as a master. Hi, [del] >I think it is strange, too. I'm not sure that it is a kernel issue. >I'm thinking it is some sort of odd hardware problem. Perhaps, >something triggered by the reboot. [del] It may not help you, but I had the same symptoms once with a SGI Indy: It could netboot, install (ext2) and everything was fine. When I rebooted to finish the install, the bootloader found nothing to boot or crashed right away. In this case it turned out that I had jumpered a CD-ROM to parity ON on the same SCSI-bus as the local harddisk I was installing on. This caused massive corruption, 'cause the controler was switched to parity OFF. (before I found out I had already pulled out *some* hair...)
