OK, let's say I go for patching a good ol' stock 2.2.20 to get raid support onit. But I'm little confused where to find the right patch. Are there any for 2.2.20? If so, where to find them? Re: HELP 2.4 booting on a serial console (resend)
Ok, I go for 2.2.20, but still can't 1) - compile the stock one ($CFLAGS set to -medlow when using sparc64-linux-gcc : should be -mcmodel medlow, had to patch arch/sparc64/(kernel/|)Makefile, and then plenty of erros like this : extra tokens at end of #endif directive) 2) - get raid stuff work, at least with 2.2.20 kernel shipped with potato Debian distrib (when I'll come to have stock 2.2.20 run , I may try :) Any hint? Thanks anyway G. - Original Message - Please try 2.2 kernels. (2.2.20) As far as i know, Enterprise 2 is a 32-bit machine (correct me if i am wrong). And as 32-bit S/linux is highly unstable, one should avoid it. Many, many people are waiting for the 2.4.x kernels (ip-tables...) for sun-32 Kind regards, Hans

Guillaume Lécroart wrote: Hi, I'm trying to get a 2.4 kernel booting on an Enterprise 2 with 2 CPUs. The trick is that I'm using a serial console, and have no graphical card inside the box. When booting (either 2.4.10-smp from unstable Debian or 2.4.14 compiled on the box itself after d/l from ftp.kernel.org), boot process starts ok : Remapping the kernel... done. Booting Linux... Starting CPU 1... OK Then stops with no output and sending break doesn't fall back to the {0} ok prompt. Appending something like serial or console=/dev/ttyS0 doesn't help. Any idea anyone? I can suggest you something.. try booting a non-smp kernel and if possible a 2.2 series. I noticed some problem using the console port to monitor the boot process on 2.4 also on i386 machine. I din't investigate the problem to much since it was more for fun. Fabbione -- Debian GNU/Linux Unstable Kernel 2.4.9 fabbione on irc.atdot.it #coredump #kchat | [EMAIL PROTECTED]

G I think you should try to boot with 2.2 to see if it's a problem with the serial driver in 2.4 (like I experienced). That was the meaning of booting with an old kernel. Software raid is working on 2.2.20.. regarding other patches you can always figure out later. Dont you think is more important now to make it booting correctly??? Re: HELP 2.4 booting on a serial console (resend)
Let's just make it clearer. 2.2.20-smp works fine on the box (serial boot OK, no unaligned panic either) , but I still can't do any softRaid Stuff. Regarding raid, this 2.2.20 comes from stable Deabian release, and using the raidtools from the SAME debian release won't work. That's why I considered using 2.4.x., and probably raidtools2. I also considered 2.4.x because of vlan support, but that's not a big issue. Now the question : I can work for myself trying to patch 2.2.20 to get raid stuff work (but I think It's gonna be hard because it's already partially patched by debian maintainer) or I could work for anybody willing to boot 2.4.10 via a serial console (Anyhow, I can't beleive that nobody's using 2.4.10 on some Netra boxes. How come they do not have this problem???), and enjoy helping the community :). But for this, I'd need some troubleshooting hints. That's what I asked for in my previous mail...
