Most OBP only support RARP, which does not conflict with DHCP/BOOTP when on the same physical network. So netboot should still be an option, and would be *the* only option accessible to you, I fear. On a second maschine, I installed tftpd and rarpd and filled /etc/ethers and renamed the flash file. I also had to use a switch because a cross-over cable refused to work. However, I have OBP-3.31 now but the modules from the Ultra80 still won't work in my Ultra60 :-( Does anyone have an explanation for this? Re: PROM update with linux
Hi, I got OBP-3.31 (currently, OBP-3.11 is installed) but do not quite know how to proceed. There is no Solaris installed and I doubt that the OBP can read Ext3. It can not. Can I refer to the update file directly from SILO? Dunno, but maybe something to try. I haven't thought of it as I was in the same situation. I have an empty hard drive, how can I format it so that it's suitable for an OBP upgrade? [del] I'll tell you what I've tried and what eventually worked: Network boot: In the release notes of the patch, this was listed as possible installation type. I can netboot almost anything here, from DECstations to SUNs and Alphas, but absolutely nothing worked. I finally installed Solaris on a spare disk, copied the patch into the root-fs and booted it from PROM. That worked with my Ultra-2. HTH, Uli -- Dipl. Inf. Since I did never try the stuff myself, I only post the starting links so you can read the relevant part yourself: http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2004/06/msg00012.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2005/02/msg00108.html The summary is to unpack the executable from the sun-provided file (using shar) and netboot it. As far as I remember I can update my machines by starting a Solaris installation - this should check the OBP version and update if necessary. Maybe I'm wrong, didn't do that for a while. You can download Solaris for free. Thanks HS Regards, Hartwig --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I even have to specify what I will use it for in a scheme that's hard to understand. I canceled the procedere before ACKing a strange agreement. It doesn't even tell me what's necessary for an absolute minimum installation. Is Solaris 8 or 9 still available somewhere. The SUN site only mentions the latest, greatest :-/ It would have the advantage of being usuable not only for the targeted Ultra60 but also for my old SS20.
