Re: sparc-newbie questions

2000-10-05 Thread Derek R. Pizzagoni
Hi Jeremy,

I'm running RedHat 6.2 on my Ultra 10, and there was a native SPARC version of
Netscape
communicator in the distribution. It is version 4.51.

You should be able to go to RedHat's FTP site (or any of its mirrors that
support SPARC),
and download the RPMs. If you can't find them, let me know, and I'll see if I
can grab
them off of the CD for you.

Also, here's the relevant portion of my XF86Config, that seems to work just
fine:

# To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.
#XkbDisable
# To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the
# lines below (which are the defaults). For example, for a non-U.S.
# keyboard, you will probably want to use:
#XkbModel"pc102"
# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
#XkbModel"microsoft"
#
# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
#XkbLayout "de"
# or:
#XkbLayout "de"
#XkbVariant "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#XkbOptions "ctrl:nocaps"
XkbRules"sun"
XkbModel"type5_unix"
XkbLayout "us"
EndSection

It's fairly straightforward to get the needed netscape packages from slink.
However, if you have an Ultra, I suggest trying Mozilla (=>M17).
The available Netscape 4.51 is really flaky on sparc, but mozilla is too
heavy for our SS5. (therefore I use w3m or links...)

Slink had the binaries for the sparc-linux 4.51, but they were never built
into .debs. I can do this and make them available, if people are
interested (I use mozilla now-adays).

There is a Netscape 4.51 (IIRC) which is not available from Netscape
anymore. I extracted my copy from Redhats SRPM.
