BTW, does anyone here know where to find cheap memory for it? I burned
half the memory of mine (which had 256M) and it is too slow to be
usable.
I'm living in Europe (Belgium and Luxembourg) at the moment, but have
people I trust in Germany and Spain if delivery is cheaper or easier
there.

Thanks

I have to agree, my Ultra10 (440MHz, 1GB RAM) is plenty fast enough for
normal desktop use. I popped a Promise Fastrack TX2 Ultra100 IDE card
and a 100GB 7200rpm hdd in it for some big, fast, cheap storage and it's
given it a new lease of life. Admittedly the Promise card is a bit
shoddy and throws timing errors if you try to drive it over ATA-66 but
it's still a darn sight faster than the onboard IDE controller.

fwiw, whilst trawling through my bits box I also stuck a USB-2 card in
it and now use my nice Microsoft trackball in X rather than the nasty
old Sun compact1 unit.

don't get the 440. we had about 100 of them, 90+% of which failed
within 18 months.

I have had no problems with the 5 or so I have running here.luck of the
draw I guess - which applies to pretty much every component part.

the 333's, on the other hand, are still going strong.

I must admit the 333 I have feels just as quick as the 440's - all have 1GB
ram which helps enormously.

in general though, they're a pretty slow machine. the IDE controller
doesn't help either.

If you're looking for Linux performance improvements in a U10, your
processor is already pretty good. Getting the box up to 512M or 1G
memory, or replacing the IDE hard drive with an ultra/wide SCSI one
(along with a bootable PCI SCSI controller), could improve speed also,
depending on where your bottlenecks are. The internal IDE controller is
not very fast, and if you're using a lot of swap due to not having much
memory you're paying a double penalty.

If your applications would benefit mainly from dual CPUs, and if you
don't need PCI, a 2x296 MHz Ultra 2 might be acquirable at a low price.
I got one for US$69 once with 256M RAM, Creator graphics card, and CD.

Also you need to check the main board and OBP revision levels for
compatibility with faster processors. Memory speed is also an issue with
400MHz processors.

The 333 MHz processor is one of the fastest due to a large internal cache.

#processors (or more) would be good.

This is not necessarily the place to ask this, a quick Google would answer
this particular question ... but never mind..

The Ultra 10 is a uniprocessor machine, the 440 is the fastest CPU the board
will take.

The Ultra 1, 5, 10 (the 5 and 10 share the same motherboard) and 30 were all
uniprocessor.
The Ultra 2 and Ultra 60 were both dual processor machines around at
(roughly) the same time.

So, the answer would be no - you can't add any extra CPU's to the U10 - it
only has one processor socket.

Cheers,

Pete.

Ultra 10 processor support

2006-03-20 Thread Chris Andrew
Hi, all.

I have a 333 Ultra 10.  I was just wondering whether it is
possible to add more processors.  I think the max speed processor
I can get is 440, but 2 processors (or more) would be good.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Chris.
