You need to setup a RARPD to assign your U5 an ip address and also a tftp
server to serve it the upgrade file.
If your other system is a debian one then this couldnt be much easier.
`aptitude install rarpd atftpd`
Create /etc/ethers with the syntax shown in ethers(5)
Put the sun openboot upgrade image in /tftpboot and link to it with the name
coresponding to the ip address you gave in /etc/ethers except in capitalised
hex format. e.g.
127.0.0.1 == 7F01
10.20.0.1 == 0A140001

Now this is set up you can power on teh U5, STOP-A before the bootloader or
whatever is started and type
`boot net`
The U5 will make a rarp request and the other machine running rarpd should
respond immediately (although it did take many attempts to get the response
on one occasion)
Then the U5 will load and execute the image.. Eatch the logfiles for debugging
info
Hope this helps, YMMV

Hi David,

Just read the posting you had with regard to
upgrading openboot. I am having similar problems with my Ultra 5. Being fairly
new to Sun systems, I wondered how I might try the netboot option that was
suggested. Simple instructions for the newbie please.

Cheers

You could netboot the prom upgrade via RARP/TFTP.

Upgrading openboot

2004-03-27 Thread David Leggett
Hello Debian/Ultra5 users (and silo developers?)

I have been attempting to upgrade my ultra5's openboot to the latest version
which i downloaded from sunsolve (patch 106121-18). Aparently the version of
openboot that is currently installed into the prom is 3.15

ok .version
Release 3.15 Version 2 created 1998/11/10 10:35
OBP 3.15.2 1998/11/10 10:35
POST 2.3.1 1998/08/07 16:33

This doesnt support net booting with dhcp which I require for some testing
with diskless sparcs.
However when i try to boot the flash update utility (following
http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=fpatches/106121>
i get the following output:

boot: /flash-update-Ultra510-latest
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x4000 for kernel
/
Fatal error: Multiple loadable segments in your ELF image
Program terminated
ok

Can i upgrade openboot with silo or do i need to use suns bootloader, whatever
that might be?
