That is not really an option. The 2.6.18 kernel is scheduled for release with Etch. What needs to happen is that the bug is fixed in 2.6.18 in Debian before the release. For that it would be good if an RC bug was filed against linux-2.6. I see that the issue is already being worked on by Jurij with the upstream Sparc kernel maintainer: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-sparc&m=116038215730519&w=2 Cheers, FJP pgpvxgn7G2oL3.pgp Description: PGP signature

I can confirm this on my SunBlade 100 too. It appeared in 2.6.17. Last known-to-work version is 2.6.16 even if I can't make the aty framebuffer work again when compiling with gcc-4.1 (which, BTW, is default for sid as of now). I've tried to bypass the check of NVRAM by comment the functions in time.c and removing all the references. This time freezes in "Booting Linux", it seems those functions are mandatory. I've attached the commented lines. If everyone is experiencing issues with those kernel releases, maybe it's better to remove them from unstable. Where does the boot halt? right where the root filesystem should be mounted ? does /dev have static entries or was it an empty dir because devfs was creating them ? boot with an install cd to find out if /dev/* entries for your hardware exist or if you know they do then boot with kernel parameter init=/bin/bash and then 'mount -o remount,rw /' to edit your fstab. Lastly does that kernel have an initrd, does it need drivers loaded for ide? This is all the things I would be looking at in your situation, as I don't have an uptodate debian sparc box to check any of these things, my entire email might be sending you in the wrong direction. It was installed using netboot. It was installed using woody, then upgraded to sarge. Some time after that it was upgraded to etch. To intall the kernel i tried: aptitude install linux-image-2.6.17-2-sparc64 Aparently all is ok, but at boot time fails :( It complains about the hdd device. something about diferences of /dev/hda and /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 I don't remmember exactly and i don't have the box right here, till monday i go to work.
