RE: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
Morning All, I have an ss5-110 (200MB ram) with the default cdrom drive (4x?). I kept on getting errors when trying to read from the cdroms, but managed to get a rudimentary install going. talking about unfriendly though :/ I kept having to un-mount the cdrom when the installer tried to mount it incorrectly, and the boot floppies were no fun (when/if they worked). But booting from the cdrom worked a treat (when it would read it properly). I've been tempted to link the sparc to my wintel box via scsi, and use the faster drives on that... but trying to get the box to install stuff properly has been the main hassle. Regards, William Law

Hello all, Reading Marc's message I took out 128 MB from my SPARC 5, with which I have been struggling to install Debian Linux from CDROM. The installation went well - it was the 12th attempt -, although I was not able to use consistently the CDROM during the whole process, only the first part until DHCP to the FTP server ... dbootstrap generates error messages about corrupt files while attempting to download from the CDROM all the time, sometimes even from some Debian FTP mirrors ... can Debian Linux handle at all more than 128 of RAM? Re: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
Hi list, hi Marc since a while I follow this thread because I have an old SS20 with 128 MB running. The installation (woody) went well with no problems. I used an old external SCSI-CDROM-Drive (with Caddy). Later on I tried to install a second SS20 with the same set of CD's and I got also the same error as you did. First I thought the CD-Drive would be the problem (a newer one). I used the same old one as on the other SS20. But the problem was still there. Later I managed to install the SS20 with boot floppies. The Boot-PROM version of both SS20's is exactly the same! The only difference is, that in the first installed SS20 I have 128 MB and one the later one only 118 MB (I don't even know if this is possible). I didn't open the machines to check, I just believe what the system tells me. So it looks like this is a confirmation of your theorie. Your error is reproducible. If your solution is reproducible I don't know, because I finished the installation with floppies. Dietmar (Debian newbie) Am Montag, 16. Re: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
I got my ss20 to boot the install cdrom! I had 4x32mb memory modules in the machine. On a lark, I pulled two of them out, hoping to affect the memory allocation algorithm, and it worked. If anybody else out there has an ss20 they've been unable to boot off cdrom, try pulling memory until it's got only 64mb, or perhaps anywhere than 128mb. I'm curious if my solution is reproducible. There's still a bug here, but this is a sufficient workaround for me. When I'm done installing, I'll put the memory back in. Marc

The "initrd extends beyond end of memory" error indicates that my initrd image ends at 0xf811adbd. This looks like a random number, but 0x11adbd == 1158589, which is the size of the root image: -r--r--r--3 root root 1158589 May 18 2002 dists/stable/main/disks-sparc/current/images-1.44/root.bin So, the kernel is apparently looking for the root image right at the end of memory. The boot loader seems to load the ramdisk (at least, it spends some time doing something between the second and third lines above). So, either silo is writing the root image into nowhere, or silo isn't passing the address of the root image into the kernel peoperly. I took some look at the silo code, but I don't know nearly enough about the sparc to know what to do to fix this. Marc
Re: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
Hi, thanks for answering. AFAIK is a SS20 a 32Bit-processor, but the image=/boot/sparc32.gz with all the other options doesn't work. Also with the initrd=/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-sparc/current/images-1.44/root.bin option. so I don't think that this is the point. Do you have any other ideas? TIA, Christophorus
Re: cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
I have the same problem with my SS20 and I have no floppy attached. I tried all the hints listed here, for example the "image=/boot/sparc64 initrd=/debian/dists/stable/main/current/images-1.44/root.bin" option but it always fails the install process with "..can't mount root fs...". Any clues? TIA, Christophorus

I had to use the boot floppies to startup the install. After the system got up and running it picked up the rest, kernel install and base install, from the CD. Nico

cd boot fails: kernel can't find root fs
I have an ss10 with a cdrom drive and no floppy. I used jigdo to download and burn a 3.0 cdrom image, which worked without a hitch. When I put the media in and boot it, SILO loads, and I hit enter to load the default kernel image. the kernel boots, then things stop working so perfectly: scsi : 1 host. The kernel appears to be seeing and loading proper drivers for the cdrom drive. But it's loading the root fs from the wrong place. /boot/silo.conf has an initrd line which points to a file which contains a compressed ext2 fs root image, as I would expect, but the systme doesn't appear to be loading it. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks! Marc
