Re: netra LOM serial port

2005-05-29 Thread Rich Halfpenny
AFAIK the LOM isn't OS dependent.. it's simply a small cpu that sits
between Serial A and the console "port" on the motherboard. When you send
the magic sequence (usually #. but this can be reconfigured) Serial A
switches from the system console to the LOM processor.

If you can get hold of a standard cisco (rolled) console cable and a
matching DB9 convertor (make sure it's DTE not DCE) then you shouldn't
have a problem. I would guess that your cabling is wrong as you should at
least get the system console output.

My Netra T1/105 is running fine with Woody and the LOM is very useful for
the rare occasion I need to power cycle it remotely. I usually leave it
sat at the LOM> prompt and not the console as the terminal server it's
connected to isn't break safe.. the LOM will catch the break instead of it
halting the box.

Hope this helps,
Rich.

The last time I tried (almost 2 years ago) the LOM serial port was
not supported by Linux. Actually, LOM was not supported at all by Linux
(I'd be interested to hear if it is now).

I used the regular serial port. If the machine is set up to do a
network boot it does not always respond to a break: you may need
many break attempts before one succeeds.

You can find the pinout for the cables on page 38 of

Hi Tom,

You need to use a rollover cable instead of a null modem cable. I use
the ones that came with my Cisco gear, but they're easy enough to make
if you don't have one lying around.

netra LOM serial port

2005-05-03 Thread Tom Vier
I got a rack mount netra off of ebay recently, but i can't seem to get into
the firmware console. I have an rj-45 <-> db-9 adapter and a db9<->db9 null
modem cable. I'm using 9600 8n1, and i've tried w/ and w/o flow ctrl. I
tried sending break and hitting enter and it doesn't respond, even when it's
powered up. I've also tried a attaching to the rj45<->db9 a cable with and
w/o a null modem adapter.
