Solved: Netscape + updating
The problem was, that Netscape 4.51 from the rpm didn't run with newer versions of libc on sparc. I have made packages that are completely independent from installed shared libraries, so this should work on systems were libc 2.2.2 or newer is installed due to upgrading to Xfree 4 or to woody. Download them from http://www.uni-giessen.de/~gc1051/netscape/ Since I am not an experienced package maintainer I would be greatful for any hints on how to improve the debs. I have lost the reference to the original rpms and don't know how to give credit to the creator. Enjoy! Nils

I'd even say it's better than Netscape 4.x. yes but slower. much slower on a sparc5. anyway i installed konqueror and opera now, and they work quite well, even if it is not very ideal. but at least now we can run woody AND people can surf the web;) thx for the hints. mek -- (c) All Rights Recycled

hi guys, in our free internetworkplace we have a few old sparcs, which we just upgraded to wooody, to do bugreports and testing, but netscape doesn't work anymore, because it requires libstdc++.so.2.8 which is too old for woody. i googled around and all i found, was "downgrade"! ;) this can't be true. is it? in that case we might indeed use potato again, as mozilla is too slow for sparc5. and the recent "faster" mozilla's are not available for sparc. neither galeon. anyone advise? thx mek -- (c) All Rights Recycled

And it was supposed to be available at ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/4.5/unix/unsupported/linux20_sparc_glibc2/complete_install/. Check the list archives for details. As for mozilla, new versions are available in unstable and testing now (though I think they're still in non-US). I would suggest trying a new version of mozilla, (though you might have to upgrade to testing to do it). Newer versions support https and a lot of other stuff that wasn't in M18. -- Jim Crumley | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Work: 612 624-6804 or -0378 |
netscape 476 pkgs for sparc?
Forgive the newbie question, please :) How can I install netscape-476, or more accurately, i suppose, where do i point apt sources at to pick it up? My sources.list is as per install with... deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib deb-src ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free I can see lots of netscape 476 support pkgs on my 2.2r3 cd's and i can see the same at the ftp mirror but i keep getting complaints about dependancies on netscape-base-476 and communicator-base-476. No amount of searching via google would turn these up. I have got mozilla m18 working but i am much more comfortable in 476 and need https, which i don't think mozilla has right now Any pointers would be great! I presume you are running testing or unstable? As far as I can tell the existing version of Netscape 4.5 for Linux/sparc will not work on either, due to an incompatibility with glibc 2.2.x. Stable (potato) has glibc 2.1.3, which works fine. After learning this, I downgraded my system from testing to stable. I still don't have that set up (don't have the right SunOS libraries), but it's not a high priority for me now that I have the native Netscape running. Good luck. Kelsey -- Kelsey Jordahl
Netscape on Sparc
This newbie is having problems installing Netscape on a Sparc20. I've downloaded and dpkg'd the 2 .deb files netscape-common*.deb and netscape-navigator*.deb, but it's not working. There are evidentally "issues" with Netscape for Sparc. Can anyone kind of give me the big picture on getting it going? I'm not into any heavy duty compiling yet so just a general overview of the main issues might point me in the right direction. Netscape as usual... :(
Ok, does anyone know what is required these days to get Netscape to actually run on woody? I downloaded and installed from source for netscape 4.5, but I keep getting 'bus errors'. :( Anyone know of a fix for this? hmmm, i'm thinking I should write a 'how-to' if I ever get this working again. :) thanks --Chris
xfree86, netscape & Re: Conffiles problem xutils_4.0.2-1
Hi, I'm not quite sure but I guess I'm not using sunos/solaris emulation. I compiled the whole stuff (xfree86_4.0.2.orig.tar.gz) under Linux. Now I'm running 2.4.0 kernel together with XFree86-4.0.2 under Debian 2.2. About netscape: I found this link: http://home.netscape.com/download/index.html Here select platform gives a lot of choices: Intel Solaris 2.4 Intel Solaris 2.5.1 Linux 1.2 Linux 2.0 Linux 2.0 (glibc) Linux 2.2 MkLinux 2.0 SPARC Linux 2.0 Solaris 2.4 Solaris 2.5 Solaris 2.5.1 SunOS 4.1.3 SunOS 54 (x86) Tru64 UNIX /usr/gnemul/solaris/bin/uname -a gives me SunOS roma 5.6 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10 which is really 5.8 if I'm running Solaris. What communicator/navigator do you suggest to try on Ultra 10? The problem what I mentioned the colors of the virtual console: sometimes they change into other ones. e.g. blue/blue for ink/paper but when I use vlock as root from virtual console and I login the colors change at first to blue/blue, switching console they change back to normal white/black. It's like magic... Of course if I change back to X everything goes back to green/half brown under the virtual console when I switch back... I forgot to mention the color changing works with vlock only if I misspell the password at first. Other problems are keyboard related: the arrow keys up and left don't repeat while the other arrow keys work under X... There's no keyboard problem under virtual console. I have a Norwegian keyboard SUN with nice Norwegian letters and words, unfortunatelly so I use a modified Xmodmap to access the tilde dollar etc. I shall try to use a modified i386 XF86Config for the keyboard I guess. Gabor PS. I may have done an unfinished job when I fixed(?) the dependencies in the xfree86-4.0.2/debian/*/DEBIAN/control files. Some of them had syntactical/semantical errors. e.g. lines ended with coma. I just put libc6 (>= 2.1.2) as last dependence. I had to download the *all.deb packages separately. PPS. I shall try 2.4.1 kernel soon. PPPS. I'm interested in acrobat however I used xpdf without problems. The version number should be 4.73 now, potato was recently updated to include that maybe a few weeks ago (at least for x86). Anyway, the netscape binary is located in navigator-smotif (for just navigator) or communicator-smotif. Sorry If im repeating a past question, but i cant seem to figure out how to isntall netscape on my sparc. When select the packages, i have a dependancy on netscape-base-472 for example, which doesnt exist. I've installed all the netscape related packages, but dont have a netscape binary. Hello I would like to run netscape, communicator, or mozilla on a sparc. I saw in the archive that someone else could not find the debs. Have they been removed for good? Also, I would like to run java applets. I've tried apt-get install netscape, apt-get install communicator, but it didn't work. I also noticed that dselect has netscape-base-4 on the cdrom, but it doesn't install a browser. What's the deal with that. Confused in NC. John Davis

Thanks, but I think you missed the point of my message. I would prefer to fix the problem at its root, on the primary Debian servers, rather than grabbing debs from other locations. For one thing, I would like to keep the Sparc box and the Intel boxes I have running the same version of Netscape, since they share user home directories via NFS, and users will get an annoying license agreement window every time they move from one arch to the other if they're running different versions. I want to have 4.7 running on everything. But mostly because it seems like there *should* be a Netscape deb on the primary server. If Netscape fails to auto-build from source on Sparc, why isn't there a fail-log for it at http://marcus.debian.net/~buildd/fail-logs ? I'm just confused as to why things are in the state that they're in. Eric
Netscape
Ok, so I've read the archives, and I can see that the usual netscape packages are missing from potato and I can either get the source and compile it or get RH's rpm file, but can someone tell me *why* the debs are missing? Is there something I can do to help fix this, or is there some legal problem? Forgive me, I'm very new to this architecture. Eric

hi, i have debian slink running on a sparcstation 2 (sun4m i think) and all is as it should be, except i can't find netscape 4.5 native for it. I have: 1. searched ftp.netscape.com extensively, it seems that last year they had a sparc-linux version in their unsupported directory, but they don't appear to have it there anymore. 2. tried installing the debian package netscape-base-45. This is just some utilities for netscape, not the actual binary for netscape. 3. looked at base/web for other netscape stuff and only found the help files and support files for java, _not_ the netscape executable. 4. found an rpm package netscape-common* and netscape-communicator*, converted it to debian using alien, and installed it. However, it seems the binaries are really for 64bit ultra's, not my little 32bit sparc. (when i run it, i get "illegal instruction", maybe it is just corrupted, i don't know). I found it in the ultra subdirectory, i can't find a similar package in the sparc directory. If someone knows where i can get the binaries of netscape, could you let me know? thanks. Hello! I'm using NetScape Communicator 4.5 for Sparc/Linux, which uses a lot of resources. Provided that my system has only 40MB I would like to use a lighter version of NetScape. Does anybody know where can I find a 3.x or even 2.x NetScape versions for Sparc/linux? Thanks a lot, Angel
Re: Netscape 3.0 for Linux/Sparc
sorry, I didn't know. however you can download Communicator 4.51 for SparcLinux+glibc2 from ftp.netscape.com (in the unsupported directory) which should solve your problem without needing any emulator. bye, Jerome ALET On Mon, 12 Apr 1999, Paul Vojta wrote: > Yes, except that the SunOS emulator is disabled at the moment. > To re-enable it, apply the enclosed diff and recompile the kernel.

building netscape/sparc
I can confirm personally that netscapes 4.5.1 for sparc/linux does work properly on my (slink-based) Sun4u box. Not sure if it works for potato or not. It uses libc2.0 and libstdc++2.8. Anyhow, doogie on IRC says the source package already includes the upstream sparc version, so if someone could try to build from the potato source package, there's a good chance they'll get a working netscape .deb set. I would do it myself but I have a real slow link and it's 30MB of source. Any takers? -- .Adam Di [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.onShore.com/>

I send a message a couple of days before about Netscape problems and there was no answer. :( I will try again. :) I need to fix this problem!!! The problem is: Hi all, I installed Debian Linux 2.1 in a Sparc 4 and installed netscape too. My problem is with Netscape. When I run Netscape there is no problem. You gotta do the mozilla.org site also, in non-free there should be a DebianSparc package. --Chris On Tue, 9 Mar 1999, Daniel Urbach wrote: > Chris Trainor wrote: > > > > Try going to ftp.mozilla.org there should be a netscape sparc version > > there... hmm, also, I thought there was a package avaiable. New netscape packages
Does anyone have the new netscape debs working? I'm trying to run them on a 2.2.0 kernel, when I start netscape, starts creating the .netscape directory but hangs part way through. I've let if run for 10 or 15 minutes, and the SS2 isn't *that* slow. I've also tried it on a .netscape directory that is already initialized, but that doesn't work either. The only response that I can get is if the .netscape/lock file exists, it will give the "already in use" error box (after which I delete it of course) Any ideas? Dave Broudy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
