RE: help setting up X and openwin
Last night I posted a request for help finishing the setup of X11R6, and getting Openwin to work. I want to sincerely thank the people who sent me email (you know who you are). The system is at home, so I cannot implement the fixes that you people reccommended until tonight. But I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the help. Assuming all goes well with these fixes, I am going to be VERY happy with my new Debian Linux system, and finally be able to start getting some cockpit time! Re: Samba and alternatives for Linux network printing
On Wed, 31 Jul 1996, Rick Macdonald wrote: I could run a 50-foot (15-metre) parallel cable from the Linux box to the room where the notebook is located. Then, the printer would be on the Linux box running Samba. I don't know what the limit is for parallel cable lengths though. I think it is 15 feet (~5 meters) for parallel. To go the distance you would need a parallel repeater or you could go serial with a drop in throughput. The HPLJII does not resovle device contention on its ports however, so you have to configure it for one port or the other (you can't have some jobs comming in on serial and others on parallel and have the printer switch automatically). To stick with parallel on the printer end you could use a serial-to-parallel converter (cost ~$60 (US)). This plus an auto parallel switch (cost ~$60 (US)) should do the trick and serial cable is cheap. The throughput would be limited to 19200 bits/second however. To get parallel throughput (23 BYTES/second) you would have to buy more expensive cable and a line extender (a.k.a. repeater)(cost ~$90 (US)). The external ethernet lpd servers start at around $250 (US). The throughput is 10 million bits/second to the server (shared across all devices on the segment), but from the server to the printer it is a regular parallel connection. Ethernet is probably the most flexible in terms or wiring the system as well. _ Don Gaffney (http://www.emba.uvm.edu/~gaffney) Engineering, Mathematics Business Administration Computer Facility University of Vermont - 237 Votey Building - Burlington, VT 05405 (802) 656-8490 - Fax: (802) 656-8802

Re: color ls
I will add that `--color' is equivalent to `--color=yes', which is probably not what you want. If you make any aliases, use `--color=tty'. You don't want nasty escape codes if it's not a tty. Try `ls --color | less' to see what I mean. And fileutils does have a bug with regards to color-ls. It should conflict and replace with it so that it will be removed automatically. I'll file a report. Guy

Re: LILO and W95
Hi Nathan -- You said: - 95 will not 'recognize' LILO, and boots right into 95. If you installed win95 *after* you installed lilo) you have win95's mbr. To boot Linux now you can either install LILO as the boot manager, with advice from Randy Jones, or you can retain win95 as the boot manager, but allow yourself a back door to get to Linux: There are several ways to do this: -- set BootMulti=1 in the [options] section of MSDOS.SYS Then, next time you boot, just after you see the signal Starting Windows 95, hit the 'F8' key. This puts you into a menu mode, from which you can choose DOS (either 7.0 or your previous DOS) and then from there you can execute the LOADLIN.EXE command. For example, C:\BIN\LOADLIN.EXE /vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2 ro boots a linux system that has its root on hdb2. -- set BootWin=0 in your MSDOS.SYS file which will automatically bring up DOS 6.22. Then run LOADLIN from there (from an AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you like). -- create a batch file containing the single line give above, then, on the win95 desktop, create a shortcut to the batch file, and type in the name of the batch file for the command line. Then right click on it, select Properties, select the Program tab, and the Advanced button. Check the MS-DOS mode check box and click OK. Now Linux is just two clicks away. Linux openwin logo, but before the screen turns blue, the X-server exits with the message lwm: can't find library 'libolg.so.3' [.. snap ..] This is a shared library and for libraries to be found you have to run ldconfig as root after moving or installing libraries. Also make sure /usr/openwin/lib is mentioned in /etc/ldconfig. Another option is to add /usr/openwin/lib to LD_LIBRARY_PATH using export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib if you use bash, or setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/openwin/lib if you use tcsh or csh. Wichert.

Wingate/IPFWADM
I would like to make my Linux box appear to the network like a gateway, sort of like Wingate running on a 95 box. I've tried IPFWADM and had no success. Any ideas? Here's the general scenario. 192.168.0.9 is the linux box, named CURLEY 192.168.0.3 is a win95 box named CADZILLA 192.168.0.4 is a win95 box named BLOO After Linux connects, a route for my isp's gateway is added in as the default gateway. At this point PPP works on the Linux box to the internet. IPFWADM is started using ipfwadm -F -m -a accept -S 192.168.0.3/24 -D 0.0.0.0 The 95 boxes are set up in the TCP/IP setup to use 192.168.0.9 (curley) as a gateway. On the 95 box, when I try to telnet to another known good host on the 'net, I get a connection failed: timed out message. At this point, I think I'm more than a little confused. LILO boot problem (still!)
After trying everything everyone suggested a couple of weeks ago I gave up and went on vacation. I've been back all week but now I have to deal with it. My problem is this: when booting from the hard disk I get LI from LILO and nothing else. I thought that this problem was caused by the fact that I was using a large drive in a machine with an old BIOS. Assuming that the problem was the large drive, the obvious suggestion that the LILO documentation (and several of you) made was to use the LINEAR option. That didn't seem to help. So I found the LILO documentation (which btw is excellent!). It pointed me into running lilo with the following options: lilo -v -v -v -t which produced the following output: LILO version 17, Copyright 1992-1995 Werner Almesberger Reading boot sector from /dev/hda1 Device 0x0300: BIOS drive 0x80, 64 heads, 527 cylinders, 63 sectors. Partition offset: 0 sectors. Merging with /boot/boot.b Device 0x0301: BIOS drive 0x80, 64 heads, 527 cylinders, 63 sectors. Partition offset: 63 sectors. Secondary loader: 7 sectors. Device 0x0301: BIOS drive 0x80, 64 heads, 527 cylinders, 63 sectors. Partition offset: 63 sectors. Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.0 Device 0x0301: BIOS drive 0x80, 64 heads, 527 cylinders, 63 sectors. Partition offset: 63 sectors. Setup length is 9 sectors. Mapped 1008 sectors. Added Linux * dev=0xc0,hd=1,cyl=67,sct=85 ro root=301 Map file size: 8192 bytes. I read further into the LILO technical documentation and it said the following about the LILO letters printing during startup: The boot sector is loaded by the ROM-BIOS at address 0x07C00. It moves itself to address 0x9A000, sets up the stack (growing downwards from 0x9B000 to 0x9A200), loads the secondary boot loader at address 0x9B000 and transfers control to it. It displays an ``L'' after moving itself and an ``I'' before starting the secondary boot loader. If a read error occurs when loading the secondary boot loader, a two-digit hex code is displayed after the ``L''. This results in an endless stream of error codes if the problem is permanent. Displaying these error codes is disabled if the build-time option {NO1STDIAG} is set. ... ... ... The secondary boot loader displays an ``L'' after being started and an ``O'' after loading the descriptor table and the default command line. Before loading the descriptor table, it checks, whether it has been loaded at the correct location and displays a question mark if it hasn't. If the descriptor table has an incorrect checksum, a minus sign is displayed. So my impression is that LILO is failing either during the load of the secondary boot loader or starting the secondary boot loader. In case it was the later (assuming a corrupted secondary boot loader) I downloaded a new lilo and installed (twice) with the same results. So now I am assuming that the problem occurs during the loading of the secondary loader. But why? /dev/hda1 is the first partition on the drive and is only 200MB. It can't be crossing the 1024 sector limit. Why is lilo showing BIOS drive 0x80 as having 64 heads, 527 cylinders and 63 heads (this calculates out to the about the actual drive size using 512-byte sector size)? Is this the problem? The BIOS is actually set up as type 47 (user) with 16 heads, 2111 Cylinders and 63 sectors. Any hints on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al Youngwerth [EMAIL PROTECTED]

help getting X and openwin to work?
I had no luck getting X to run on my first installation of Debian 1.1 from the Gold cd from I-connect. So I completely re-loaded the distribution, taking extra care to resolve the dependency conflicts. When I got to the configure packages section, I noticed in the error message dpkg - Configure returned error exit status 1 that there were still a couple of things not installed right. So I went back and fixed that, and everything configured fine except the X server setup. After fixing a problem with the mouse in XF86Config, I got X up and running fairly well. I think it is giving me fvwm as the default window manager, and the middle mouse button doesn't work right ( the menu flashes a lot and I cannot select anything on that menu). I really prefer running openwin, so I created the directory /usr/openwin and copied all the stuff from my Slackware system over to there (bin, lib, etc.) I can get openwin to start, display the Linux openwin logo, but before the screen turns blue, the X-server exits with the message lwm: can't find library 'libolg.so.3' That library exists in the openwin/lib hierarchy, so I think there must be a link missing somewhere, possibly between /usr/X11/lib and somewhere. XFree86 3.1.2[DE]
I am using a Mach 64 card (ATI Winboost, as far as I can tell) that seems to hang when I run the XF86_Mach64 server. From various postings to this list I gather that there is hope I will be able to run it successfully with the XFree86 3.1.2E Mach64 server. My understanding is that the currently available Debian X11R6 packages are from XFree86 3.1.2 and to upgrade I will need first to install the 3.1.2D distribution from ftp.xfree86.org then to install the upgrade files for 3.1.2E. RE: more info on PPP problem
I just finished fighting something similar. I think what's happening is that the 'chat' section is not getting started. To test it, use the following command (but insert your info in the right places) pppd -connect 'chat -v ATDT5551212 CONNECT ogin: yerlogin word: yerpassword' /dev/cua1 38400 debug modem noipdefault netmask 255.0.0.0 Use /dev/cua0 for COM1, /dev/cua1 for COM2. Replace 5551212 with your ISP's phone#, and change it to ATm0DT if you want the modem not to raise cain when it connects (mine's loud as heck!) When it's done, and looks connected, issue route add default gw 123.123.123.123 Replace 123.123.123.123 with your ISP's gateway address. If you don't know it, they can give it to you. This should work for diagnostic purposes, but sure is a pain to do each time. I set up some scripts to do it all for me, works ok. Let me know if this helps, if something needs clarification, let me know. Good luck! Tim BTW, let me know if it works on your system.. - I am Pentium of Borg. Division is futile. Re: Wingate/IPFWADM
Hi Tim -- I have succeeded in making ipfw going by doing 2 things: 1. Set up ipfw in the kernel. To do this, I set these networking options (all other networking options were not set, i.e., their value=n). --- CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y CONFIG_NET=y CONFIG_FIREWALL=y CONFIG_NET_ALIAS=y CONFIG_INET=y CONFIG_IP_FORWARD=y CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE=y CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG=y CONFIG_IP_ALIAS=m CONFIG_IP_NOSR=y CONFIG_SKB_LARGE=y CONFIG_NETDEVICES=y CONFIG_DUMMY=m CONFIG_PPP=m CONFIG_NET_ETHERNET=y CONFIG_NET_VENDOR_3COM=y CONFIG_EL3=m --- I suspect I didn't have to set all of them, particularly CONFIG_NET_ALIAS, but setting it doesn't seem to hurt much. 2. I have a line like yours in my /etc/ppp/ip-up script. Mine says: ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -P all -S 192.168.0.2/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 where 192.168.0.2 is the IP address of my husband's Windows machine. I suspect the differences between your line and mine don't matter very much. Other than that, all I had to do was to set up the appropriate databases on the Windows machine. Then it just worked. If this is any help, let me (really, the list) know. I think a lot of people are wondering how to do this. Good luck, Susan Kleinmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Ipfwadm
This message is in reply to the one just posted by Susan Kleinmann: I tried something similar to what you said, but I could not get it to work. What did work for me was what Bernd Eckenfels mentioned earlier (Thanks, Bernd). Essentially, ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.0/29 -D 0/0 Which will masquerade host 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.7 I tried it and it worked. As we type, I'm looking in the man pages still trying to gain a better understanding (seeing as I'm a bit of a Linux newbee). Just one more thang... I know ping wont work through this, but is there something I can do to make FTP operational from all the other machines besides the Linux box? Thanks, I hope this helps everyone else out as much as it did me. Tim - I am Pentium of Borg. Division is futile. You will be APPROXIMATED! - Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've got perl and will try it this afternoon (uk time). By the way, there seem to be a project to develop a proxy version of the Perl socket package (in the list of perl modules). That could also be a solution (see on the perl web). Anyway, it would be nice to have a proxy ftp method in dselect in addition to the ftp method (you can't just replace ftp...). You need it to install the system, gcc and co, so even before being able to compile a socks version of perl (chicken and eggs ?). I will keep you informed of my progress... Thanks for the help... 50% Performance lose
I have recently upgraded to Debian 1.1 from 0.93R6 and have noticed a big performance drop when using the f2c program to run FORTRAN programs. Here are the numbers: 24 secs execution time when compiled and run under 0.93R6. 30 secs execution time when compiled under 0.93R6 and run under 1.1 36 secs execution time when compiled and run under 1.1 I'm not sure about version numbers but the shared library version number for 0.93R6 is 0.11, and for Debian 1.1 the version number is 2.1. Obviously 0.93R6 is aout and 1.1 is elf but i don't know if this is relevant. There is no performance loss with C programs. Any suggestions welcome.

Re: XFree86 3.1.2[DE]
Hi! My understanding is that the currently available Debian X11R6 packages are from XFree86 3.1.2 and to upgrade I will need first to install the 3.1.2D distribution from ftp.xfree86.org then to install the upgrade files for 3.1.2E. Can anyone confirm this? I would prefer an unnecessary upgrade. I use an ATI Win Turbo with Mach 64 Chip (I think). Therefore I needed XFree86 3.1.2E (release D is expired). This is what I did and it might also work for you: 1. Install Debian as usual, with all X stuff and the Mach64 Server. 2. Install the XFree86 3.1.2E Mach64 Server Binary (this is only the /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64 file!) over the old server. Using the new server with the old libs/binaries works fine. I think it is the best way to first install the old server and then overwrite it, so debian thinks that the depencies are correct. Otherwise it will complain about not having a X server installed. Hi all, I noticed 1.1.3 up on the master debian ftp site. Where is the doc that states the changes from 1.1.2? As far as I see it, its just a link back to the Debian-1.1-fixed (just like 1.1.2 had) Jim === Jim Gerace Senior Systems Engineer email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] www: http://www.kasinet.com
Re: Ipfwadm
Hi, Just one more thang... I know ping wont work through this, but is there something I can do to make FTP operational from all the other machines besides the Linux box? you can eighter use passive FTP from the PC (Netscape does this for example), or you need to load the ip_masq_ftp module. (With depmod ip_masq_ftp, or by inserting a line into /etc/modules and reboot). Greetings Bernd

dpkg-ftp or installing via FTP
Hi guys, I grabbed and installed dpkg-ftp. But I see no mention of any ftp usage when I run dpkg --help. Is there supposed to be a separate binary called dpkg-ftp? Because I can't find any... I'm trying to download the latest Debian distribution via FTP, but I've had problems both with ncftp and with dftp. I was hoping dpkg-ftp would be a better solution... Another suggestion was to mirror debian. How much space is required to mirror? Can a mirror be partial? Lastly, once I've gotten all that's required from FTP, is dselect a good method to use for performing the install? Thanks, Ricardo

Using the new server with the old libs/binaries works fine. I think it is the best way to first install the old server and then overwrite it, so debian thinks that the depencies are correct. Otherwise it will complain about not having a X server installed. A better way would be to install the new server somewhere in /usr/local. Then edit the file /etc/X11/Xserver so it refers to the new server. It's best to install local software in /usr/local and not in /usr. I'm not sure, but you may need to install the package termcap-compat for the XFree beta servers to work. Guy

jave applets don't work in netscape 3.0b5a
i have two hosts, a and b, running debian 1.1. in a that i upgraded from debian 0.93, java works fine in netscape 3.0b5a. in b where debian 1.1 was installed from scratch, java applets don't work. not even the java console shows up. there are no error messages. i suspect that the problem is with X, since java works if i'm on a and start netscape remotely on b and doesn't work if i'm on b and start java remotely on a. any idea what might be going wrong? in a X runs in 16 bit mode and in b in 24 bit mode, but i have also tried 16 bit mode in b. ldd output is: lohi:~% ldd `which netscape` libXt.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0 libSM.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6.0 libICE.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6.0 libXmu.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6.0 libXpm.so.4 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.7 libXext.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6.0 libX11.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.0 libdl.so.1 = /lib/libdl.so.1.7.14 libc.so.5 = /lib/libc.so.5.2.18 -- juha
mail-delivery-agents?
The current way I manage my e-mail involves using popclient to get incoming e-mail from my ISP (mail.polaris.net) to dwarf's incoming mail folder on my machine (dwarf.polaris.net), outgoing mail is handled by Pine using SMTP. I would like to try some other mail readers like elm and emacs but none of these seem to be able to do SMTP and so require the presence of a mail-delivery-agent. I know I have heard pro and con discussions about smail vs sendmail but am still confused. Also I hear hints that qmail (?) will soon be a Debian package. I am a complete idiot when it comes to mail systems, so please be simple and clear in your answer ;-) What do I need to understand to install and use any of the available packages? If I am going to go to the trouble of learning to install a mail-delivery-agent I will want to be able to filter mail to various mail-folders based on the source of that mail. If that is not available in the mail-delivery-agent, then point me to a package that will work with the target mail-delivery-agent. problems with talk and ytalk
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not so I'm not reporting it as one yet. 1. Both ytalk and talk work talking on the same machine. 2. Neither ytalk nor talk will talk to other machines. 3. talk just sits (no talk request is transmitted), ytalk prints an find_daemon: recv() failed Connection refused sendit: recv() failed Connection refused sendit: recv() failed Connection refused 4. mesg has been set to `y', so that's not it. 5. I can receive talk requests from other machines, but cannot accept them. 6. The machines I am trying to talk to are an OSF/1 2.1 machine, a Solaris 2.4 machine, and a Linux box running RedHat 3.0. The RedHat box also has the same problem. Either I'm clueless or something is wrong with Linux talk. I'm aware of the various flavors of talk, but ytalk should be able to talk to most of them. Actually, Linux `talk' should be able to talk to all common flavors of talk. Dan -- Daniel Quinlan Member of the League for Programming Freedom [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: unreliable service of I-Connect
I want to let you know how bad the service of the Debian/Linux Distributor is. I include a copy of our correspondence with I-Connect. ... Sorry for the delay. It all started with bad Linux kernel and then a huge backlog. We will process your order today or tomorrow. I, too, had some frustrating interaction with I-Connect, but Simon explained the situation with the bad kernel or whatever, and when he finally told me that it was being shipped I received it in a timely fashion. LILO vs LOADLIN (was Re: LILO and W95)
Hi The DOS+LOADLIN solution is in my opinion a very practical and safe one. I read much safer than LILO somewhere and some time ago, but I cannot recall why nor if it has changed with the last versions of LILO for which horror histories abound. Anybody knows? There is however at least one situation that none of LILO or SYSLINUX can cope with: The Compaq boxes with a PCI SCSI and or Ethernet card on board. The problem is that Linux cannot address the PCI services on them (Ref: Linus Torvald). This is the case, at least, for the Compaq Deskpro and the high end XL series. There was a page on the WWW for Linux on these last. But...DOS+LOADLIN can cope with it: Compaq provides a DOS driver (luckily Novell Netware has the same problem as Linux :) called MOVEPCI which re-addresses PCI services and exits. Then one can load via MS-DOS LOADLIN. A CONFIG.SYS on top of MS-DOS 5.0 that worked for me is: - Cut here DEVICE=\MOVEPCI.SYS SHEL=\LOADLIN \vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6 ro - Cut here This and all the variants you can imagine like(take them alone or combined) LOADLIN from AUTOEXEC, within a menuitem (DOS 6.xx), many different kernels and/or root on different partitions, with the kernel image on HD or FD (yes, two moderatly large kernels + LOADLIN + MOVEPCI...fit in one FD!) and you can of course pass old the boot parameters you one in a line or (if too long for DOS) in a file. And if in a floppy is readable/transportable from/to any DOS machine around (the same good point of Syslinux used on Debian). I think LOADLIN is a good (and versatile) choice. I prefer it to LILO unless somebody can show me a good reason to not. P.S. Yes, I know that with Syslinux you can fit 3 kernels on one floppy + a tiny editor (I have DOS screen editor of size=4096 bytes!) __ Reply Separator _ Subject: Re: LILO and W95 Author: debian-user@lists.debian.org at cclink Date:02.08.96 07:26 On Thu, 1 Aug 1996, nathan work wrote: ok, i just loaded linux after w95 for the first time. i know very little about linux or unix for that matter and i'm having a real problem - 95 will not 'recognize' LILO, and boots right into 95. i didn't have this problem with 3.1. what i need is for someone to be gracious enough to take me by the hand and show me how to overcome this (to keep w95 from controling what's booted). please email me if you'd like: What I have done is similar to what Susan suggest in using LOADLIN, but I have setup a menuitem in config.sys to handle it. The line I use in the config.sys file is: shell=c:\loadlin.exe c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 ro This assumes my root file system is on hda6. This way when I boot I have the option presented to me. It is very much like LILO, but is all done through DOS/WIN95 utilities (when I started using linux, I was more comfortable doing it this way). --- Kenny Wickstrom | gnu - a new generation in s/w devel/support [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Linux - a much improved Un*x clone (847)740-4008 | Debian - a Linux distribution setting the #include std-disclaimer |standard for future distributions
