pcmcia ethernet cont'd
OK here's what I did. I've installed the buzz-updates disks and I have a 2.0.6 kernel now and I've added the pcmcia_cs package and the modules that go with it and my system recognises the 3c589c at boot time. However, it doesn't setup the interface for some reason and my strobe light is hard on on the card's interface. So, if I execute network manually it starts up correctly I'm guessing that when I did the install the setup scripts couldn't detect the interface and so wrote the /etc/init.d/network file but didn't create the rcn.d link. Re: inews package conflicts with domestic convention
MvS == Miquel van Smoorenburg [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I found Debian inews package conflicts with Japanese domestic convention about news articles. We have embedded raw ESCs without any special encodings into articles to write Japanese, and the inews package is programmed to strip these ESCs silently. MvS I think news is not required to be 8 bit clean, so that might MvS be possible It has not been `7-bit clean' either, though RFC 1036 or RFC 822 does not prohibit the use of any control characters in body. Most of Japanese believe ESCs should pass since their use in Usenet articles is not explicitly prohibited, though I doubt if it must be true. In respect to this problem, it might be good to use some MIME encoding, but the ESC convention used in Japan predates MIME and many programs are not prepared to handle such an encoding yet:-(. I wish it would be `fixed' in the future. MvS Are you talking about inews or inewsinn? If you mean inewsinn MvS (I maintain the INN package) I could fix it. inn_1.4unoff4-2 MvS is on its way. I am not sure if it is necessary to modify INN, but I believe INN and the latest C News is already 8-bit clean. Boot disk SCSI kernel panic
Package: boot1440.bin / aic7xxx Version: Debian 1.1 I get a kernel panic on SCSI probing on attempting to boot from the standard Debian boot disk and can go no further. My system is a 486 DX2/80 with an Adaptec AHA2842 VL Bus SCSI card. boot1440.bin was obtained from \buzz\disks-i3\current on the 3 Oct 96 Debian CD from iConnect. On looking up the SCSI driver in the F4 help, I see that aic7xxx may receive the options extended, noreset. On checking the README for the driver on another Linux system, I see no reference to extended, and the correct syntax for noreset is no_reset. The latter portion of the boot sequence output is as follows (close, I hope, since I copied it by hand): aic7xxx: (aic7xxx_isr) Encountered Spurious Interrupt qlogicisp : PCI bios not present PPA: unable to initialize controller at 0x378, error 2 scsi0: Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 3.2/3.1/3.0 scsi : 1 host aic7xxx: Scanning channel A for devices aix7xxx: (aic7xxx_isr) BRKADRINT error(0x1): Illegal Host Access Kernel panic: aic7xxx (aic7xxx_isr) BRKADRINT, error(0x1) seqaddr(0x0) I had exactly the same difficulty with the Slackware 96 boot disk, write Patrick Volkering and Walnut Creek about it and never heard a word from them. It is worth noting that this same system is successfully running Slackware Linux, manually upgraded from kernel 1.2.18 which boots from a zImage bootdisk (kernel 2.0.12, or some such) made with make zdisk and the SCSI boot operation is executed with no problem. I don't know if this is a bug, a configuration problem, or a startup parameters problem, but I assume the former since I can find no documentation which might direct me to appropriate config or startup param solutions. Has anyone any knowledge of this problem and if it can be solved at my end? I'll be happy to supply additional information if necessary. How to interrupt the boot process?
Hello all, I just made a *BIG* mistake on my Debian Linux box resulting in not being able to boot that machine anymore... Some problems with lilo and a custom kernel not finding his modules (that also claim to have unresolved symbols). The machine boots until it hangs when trying to access non-existent devices, but after starting some user level daemons already. Falling back to a working kernel doesn't work since I made an error configuring lilo. Booting from the custom floppy resulted in going to the hard disk and then continuing with the normal boot process. Booting the stock installation floppy and getting a root shell didn't help since then I was unable to remount the hard disk as / where it should have been (e.g. to manipulate files with programs relying on shared libraries). Now I have some questions: - How can I stop the boot process half-way to get a single-user root shell? All I did in terms of ^C, ^Q@(#*$ and Alt-any-key didn't help, regardless of where in the boot process I press them. - Is there an equivalent to chroot in Debian Linux (I only can compare to BSD* here). - When having a set of kernels how do I manage to get them all have their individual System.map? - As a quick fix, could somebody of you please point me to a dpkg working under BSD*? I didn't manage to make the port yet, but that would enable me to read further documentation on the CD. Thank you! Regards, Toni. Re: How to interrupt the boot process?
Hi Toni, there may have been much more profound answers to your questions, bu t in case, there were none, here is what I do when in trouble: Now I have some questions: - How can I stop the boot process half-way to get a single-user root shell? At the beginning, just after your POST completes (BIOS checking the system), hit CAPS LOCK once - this is prerequisit for Lilo to prompt you for further input befor bootstraping Linux... At the Lilo: prompt, you may alter some kernel-driver parameters, as well as the init-behaviour. the keyword single at the Lilo-prompt will bootstrap Linux in single-user mode... All I did in terms of ^C, ^Q@(#*$ and Alt-any-key didn't help, regardless of where in the boot process I press them. I don't know of such keypresses, that equal the SPARC Boot Interruption...:-? - Is there an equivalent to chroot in Debian Linux (I only can compare to BSD* here). Yes there is an equal chroot. I'd better cutpast portion of the man-page :-) --- NAME chroot - change root directory SYNOPSIS chroot newroot [command] DESCRIPTION The chroot command changes its root directory to the supplied directory newroot and exec's command, if supplied, or an interactive copy of your shell. Note, command or the shell are run as your real-user-id. Note also that in the Debian GNU/Linux version only chroot(2) is called. In the original 4.4BSD-Lite version both chdir(2) and chroot(2) are called. -- - When having a set of kernels how do I manage to get them all have their individual System.map? don't know if you can...but it isn't critical during bootstraping. I've sinced learned that I should be looking at /etc/pcmcia/network and since I changed that things started work.
