Anonymous ftp times incorrect?

1998-08-11 Thread Colin Telmer
One of the machines I help maintain is running kernel 2.0.33 with 2 PII400
processors and an adaptec scsi card (debian machine with a bunch of RedHat
stuff installed on it - I can't control the owner:)). The machine
regularly crashes and I have been trying to help track down the problem
with no avail. The one strange thing that I have run across is the
anonymous ftp sessions seem to add EST to an EST clock. User ftps don't.
Does anyone have any idea why this is? Any help is gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Colin.

The only weird thing I still detect is that the anonymous

This message means something else.

You have logged into a terminal. Now chat exits and pppd starts. Then
it send LCP requests to establish a ppp connection. Since the is no
pppd running on the other side of the link, your side doesn't get an
answer.

You have to start pppd before exiting the chatscript.

Most likely you will have to specify some parameter. As I have never
done such a thing (only dial ins right into a waiting pppd, no
terminal login), I can only point you towards /usr/doc/ppp and man
pppd.

But you get the picture about the reason of this error I hope.

Maybe you would have to choose some other item from the menu? What
does the helpdesk about the procedure of dial in? They most likely
only know windows, but the menuchoices are the same regardless of the
OS.

Good luck,
Martin

To use the Matrox Mystique you need to be running the SVGA server.
There is a site dedicated to setting up Matrox cards for Linux. I don;t
remember the url, just search for it on Infoseek. To configure xwindows
use XF86Config or for a text setup use xf86config. The xf86config is
better sometimes because you can see exactly what you putting in for your
settings.

Most likely the problem is simply that ppp hasn't started--the shell is
probably just
echoing back the LCP config requests. Try going through the chat procedure by
hand and
see if you get PPP packets after you ultimately login to the Linux box.

dump and restore problems

1998-08-11 Thread Lee Bradshaw
Hi,

I'm trying to test dump and restore, and I've been having problems with
restore. I'm using a buslogin 930 controller and an HP DDS3 tape drive.
Here are some examples of my restore problems:

freefall ~ $ sudo restore -x -v -f /dev/st0 lee/wav.old/clint.wav
Verify tape and initialize maps
Tape block size is 1
Dump date: Tue Aug 11 09:14:25 1998
Dumped from: the epoch
Level 0 dump of /home on freefall:/dev/sda5
Label: none
Extract directories from tape
Initialize symbol table.
bad name to addentry ./lee/wav.old
abort? [yn] y
dump core? [yn] n

but if I do an interactive restore I can see the file:

freefall ~ $ sudo restore -i -v -f /dev/st0
Verify tape and initialize maps
Tape block size is 1
Dump date: Tue Aug 11 09:14:25 1998
Dumped from: the epoch
Level 0 dump of /home on freefall:/dev/sda5
Label: none
Extract directories from tape
Initialize symbol table.
restore > cd lee/wav.old
restore > ls clint.wav
309253 clint.wav
restore > add clint.wav
bad name to addentry ./lee/wav.old
abort? [yn] y
dump core? [yn] n

If I select the directory instead it works ok in the case:

freefall ~ $ sudo restore -i -v -f /dev/st0
Verify tape and initialize maps
Tape block size is 1
Dump date: Tue Aug 11 09:14:25 1998
Dumped from: the epoch
Level 0 dump of /home on freefall:/dev/sda5
Label: none
Extract directories from tape
Initialize symbol table.
restore > cd lee
restore > add wav.old
tore > ls
./lee:
  4097 ./
 2 ../
  .
  .
  .
309249 *wav.old/
174081 work/

When I successfully extract the directory, the files have the correct
permissions but the directories are owned by root.

In other tests, selecting directories has failed with the bad name/abort
message. The software is beta, is anyone using it successfully? Would
anyone recommend BRU2000 or any of the other linux compatible commercial
backup programs.

I just looked, and haven't found a mouse problem. after a normal startup, it
ran for a couple of hours, then suddenly stopped working and spewed the
following:

Fatal server error:
Hung in ApmSync()

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages

additional attempts to launch yield:

Due to the way xdm crashes (the blink-thing), i have to telnet in to kill xdm

Yes, but it won't create past /dev/sd15. The last time I installed
Debian I had put 16 partitions on my brand new 9.1GB SCSI disk and then
found I only had sda devices numbered up to 15. I read the manpage for
/dev/MAKEDEV and found it pretty useless as well for this problem. They
really should tell you how to do things like this, or at least have a
more intuitive way (i.e. /dev/MAKEDEV /dev/sda16). Heh heh, some very
interesting things happen when you try cp on a disk device (after trying
everything else I tried copying sda15 to sda16 thinking it would just
copy the tiny little file... very strange what starts to happen).

Fortunately though it's not life-or-death that I have 16 partitions so I
was able to just cfdisk 1 away and move on.

Didn't you read the documentation? There is no SB 16 compatible card on the
market. Either you have an original SB, or you don't and the card ships with
crappy software drivers that try to achieve SB compatibility under DOS and
windows (well, there is an exception for 8 bit cards, so if you have one,
you may have luck).

So, you can't blindly activating options in the driver and hope that it
works.

Read the Sound-HOWTO and the Readmes under /usr/src/linux/driver/sound
carefully, be sure to have full name of your sound card at hand, and then
answer the config options very very carefully, following the various
documentations on another console.

Come back if you still encounter problems, ,but be sure to provide us with
more information about the type of your card (there are many Aztech Galaxy
cards),

This is how it is supposed to be you can install several different
versions of communicator with one deb package file. Just put the tgz
communicator file in /tmp and make sure it is owned by root.root and
'dpkg -i netscape*'. The installer will extract the tgz to a temp
directory and run the netscape installer and put all the files in the
correct place and keep track of it all. If you want to remove it then
it removes all the files that netscape installed. Very slick if you
ask me.

I'd try reinstalling X, then getting the Netscape installer
deb package (there used to be one, you have to grab netscape
off a Netscape site then install the .deb).

You can reinstall packages by having the .deb file available
(in the current working directory, or append the path to the
file name) then using dpkg -i .

My guess is you will need to reinstall xbase and your xserver.

hmm, okay i haven't actually used this for a year or so... i checked my
old config files and this used to work, but i guess it doesn't anymore.

> Use ServiceSwitchFile (/etc/service.switch if your OS does not provide
> its own) instead.

so i'd do this. i noticed that in your nsswitch file you had a line like
this:

hosts: files dns

you might need to change this to:

hosts: files

because you never want it to try to use dns. however since you really do
want it to do dns when you are connected to the net and have access to a
nameserver. if you use the top version and make sure that your smarthost
is listed in your hosts file then you should be okay. it's been a long
time since i set this up and i normally did it with uucp so you didn't
have to worry as much about this stuff.

one other point is that if you just list a smart host it probably will try
and deliver to that immediately. there is a sendmail.mc option which will
make it automatically dump stuff into the queue, and then you can do
something like in your /etc/ppp/ip-up file:

/usr/sbin/sendmail -q

which will force the queue to be run as soon as your ppp connection comes
up.

> I might be doing some errors with back and forward single quotes ???

i'm pretty sure that's not an issue.

> I am appending my current sendmail.mc, my nsswitch.conf, my hosts and my

other then the things above, it mostly looked okay. your .mc file was
very simple. i've attached the one i use on my servers for you too look
at if you like... it's not at all the same situation but i thought it
might be useful or interesting.

one other thing is that i notice that you are using the nullclient option.
when you are using the nullclient macro i believe it disables a lot of the
other features. i would suggest getting rid of the nullclient option and
using the smarthost option as well.

also as a general rule you should list all you the defines before you list
the FEATURE stuff. the reason is that the defines sometimes modify
variables which the FEATURE's use.

netscape binaries aren't included in the official Debian CD. This isn't a
bug, but a feature. You must get them from Netscape. The .deb is a
installer. It sets the proper location of libraries, environment
variables and allow the deinstalation in an easy way.

I just installed one new version of communicator today using this way; it
works very well. Put the .tgz file in the /tmp directory, get the
installer (.deb) for your version (n3 ou n4) and go on.

I've had to stop the auto-start of xdm. After a couple of hours, it

AFAIK there is no deb for "the wrapper" butmy system seems to use
a wrapper script (my xserver isn't SUID)

You installed xbase? and the proper xserver? what versions? is this from
2.0 or unstable?

The netscape .deb is an installer (we are not allowed to actually
put netscape into a package for install and distribute it)
you need to get the netscape originals and place them in /tmp
THEN use the netscape .deb to install...it will take the files
from /tmp and install it debian "properly"

1998-08-11 Thread Jeremiah Cornelius

I just installed Debian 2.0 on my new Dual PentiumPro box.

IMHO, It's got some real plusses, and some definite minuses as cmpared
to RH 5.x...

My real problem right now, is that X seems to have installed itself
without Xwrapper, and only root can launch X! I don't want to setuid
the xserver, and I can't find a .deb for the wrapper.

Also, the Netscape .deb packages from contrib seem very broken. They
will not install, complaining that original .tgz files must be named
specifically, located in /tmp, and owned by root. I suppose I could
get the originals from NS, but that sort of defeats the purpose of
maintaining a package system.

I used alien to convert RedHat's Netscape 4 .rpm's to .deb. These
installed with dpkg, but do not function. The executable exits,
reporting it will not allow execution as root (!). Is this related to
missing Xwrapper? I have su'd as a regular user (as non root cannot
launch X) and Netscape barfs, unable to copy files to the home
directory ("* not found").

All in all, I was interested in the technical superiority touted for
the new Debian (particularly the management of legacy libs), and have
been inclined towards a more "GNUishly blessed OS. I hope someone can
help here, otherwise I slink back to RedHat...

Thanks,

Lee,
I have the same kernel (2.0.34) with the same options and my IBM
Thinkpad 760XL powers off.

Could it be that you are not using the kernel compiled with these
options ??

I personally like to use the following sequence:

cd /usr/src/linux
make [x|menu]config
make-kpkg --zimage --version myhost.1 kernel_image
dpkg -i ../kernel-image-2.0.34_myhost.1_i386.deb
shutdown -r -t0 now

make-kpkg comes from the kernel-package debian package (section misc).

use /dev/psaux in your XF86Config or make /dev/mouse a symlink to it:

ln -sf /dev/psaux /dev/mouse

you can double check what we say by issuing dmesg | less and seeing a

I don't use vim either. I rather use xemacs. Sometimes I use joe at

joe freezes as well.

It is C-s that causes this (Maybe *S*top or something).

I can't really help with this specifically, but I'd definately
recommend that if you're building your own kernels under Debian you
learn to use the make-kpkg utility (it's part of the kernel-package
package in the "misc" section under dselect). It's very easy to use
and it's the Debian Way (TM) to create and install your own custom
kernels. It basically creates a kernel-image*.deb file that you
install just like you do with the official Debian kernel-image*.deb
files. It puts things in their correct place and offers to run lilo
for you. Might be a good idea to look into it!

Quick steps:

1) Unpack the kernel source (either in the form of a Debian
kernel-source package or raw kernel source)

2) Go into the directory where the source was unpacked, e.g.,
/usr/src/linux.

3) Do one of "make config", or "make menuconfig", or "make xconfig"

4) Build the kernel package with make-kpkg (which compiles everything
for you, no "make zImage" & "make modules" required)
make-kpkg --revision mykernel.1 --zimage kernel_image

5) cd ..

6) dpkg -i kernel-image-2.0.35_mykernel.1_i386.deb

You're done!

Sure thing. If you didn't know, dselect is a front-end to a program
to dpkg, and you can use that directly to install, remove, configure
packages directly (as opposed to working on a collection of packages,
requiring a package list).

Use "dpkg -i filename.deb" to install the package of your choice from
the floppy.

By the way, you can avoid floppies altogether by mounting your Win95
partition under Linux. If your Win95 partition is /dev/hda1 and you
want to mount it at /mnt/windows, type this:

"mount /dev/hda1 -t vfat /mnt/windows"

If you have vfat compiled into your kernel, then you can access those
downloaded .debs directly. Try "man mount" and "man dpkg" to find out
more about these two programs.

Take a look at the "wvdial" package - very handy. You'll need PPP
installed and configured as well, but it would help if you had a try
first and told us how far you've got.

Good luck!

I don't use vim, but I'm pretty sure that ^s and ^q are software flow
control characters ... ^s means "stop sending" and ^q means "start
sending". If you type a ^s and the screen quits "working", type ^q and
all should be well again.

(I always thought these two characters did the reverse, but I guess my
memory is poor).

Sound Cards (again)

1998-08-11 Thread Mark Panzer
I know the subject of soundcards comes up all to often, but I was
wondering if the users on this group could recommend a good quality card
for around $30. I would also like to use this card in Win 95 for games
like Fighters Anthology and others. I currently have the 2.0.34 sources
for the kernel installed. I also remeber hearing some users complain
about a problem with iso9660 support. Thanks for your help again.

1998-08-11 Thread Shaleh
Try typing the word "reset" -- yes it will come out looking like
gibberish but type it anyway and hit return. This USUALLY works. I am
known for letting grep go through binary files. Has the same effect as
you describe. Also try ^o^u or ^u^o (I forget the sequence). This
seems to help when nothing else does.

I use vim, but never tried the control sequence you gave. Sorry.

Nuking damned scrambled consoles.

1998-08-11 Thread Christopher Barry
Hi,

Every now and then I do a little goof-up that scrambles a virtual
console and I'm sure we all do sometimes but lately I've been doing a
little programming and if I accidentally gib a string argument then it
corrupts the console every single time so I quickly run out of all 6
consoles and am forced to reboot.

Now, there has GOT to be a way to recover a scrambled console, right?
Why isn't there protection for this in the first place? I don't see why
this would ever be desired behavior, unless this property is somehow
essential for 'correctness'?

Anyways, any help appreciated.

Also, if there are any vim users reading this what does ^x ^s do? I
sometimes accidentally type this when I mean to save a file (bad habit
from using ae), and this seems to lock up vim pretty hard.

Actually, you can. But of course it's better to set this up automagically.

hostname no. IP address, DNS servers (two), WINS servers (two) yes. You set
these as
pppd options. The IP address will be set with the :
option, DNS
with 'ms-dns X.X.X.X', and WINS with 'ms-wins X.X.X.X'. Had you read the pppd

you would have discovered this.

If you are talking about the xhost feature implemented on user side by
the xhost command this is normal and the first stage of security to
protect your xserver.

You can read more about access control in the manual pages of the

The solution is quite simple, put the fqdn first, i.e. the line should read:

127.0.0.1 etok.etik.com.ph etok

You can check the result by using "hostname -f" (or hostname --fqdn).

The easy answer is no. Different binaries, libraries, Operating Sytems,
etc.

HOWEVER there is a project called WINE. This is a project to allow
WinOS apps to on X. It is both an emulator for the binaries and a
re-write of the M$ libs. Some things work, many things don't. Give it
a shot. Seems to work best if you install the apps from withing
Windows, then reboot and run them with WINE.

[Q] Writing Debian CDs with Windows software

1998-08-11 Thread Arifi Koseoglu
Hello everyone,

I hope this is not a FAQ.

I downloaded the Debian CD images, and unsuccessfully tried to write
them to CDs using the following applications:

HP SureStore cd writer software
Adaptec EZ CD-Writer

Although I changed the .raw extensions to .iso, the software listed
above did not recognize them as ISO9660 CD images and attempted to
just copy the file to the CD, which is of course useless.

The MD5 checksums of the files are correct.

I will appreciate very much if anyone here could shed some light
on the problem.

Thanks in advance,

First, use dpkg to install those packages you got; something like 'dpkg
-i packagename.deb'. However, once you get internet access working on
your Linux system, use 'dselect' or 'apt' to automaticly download files
from ftp.debian.org for example, instead of manually doing it.
I suggest getting the latest versions of dpkg, dselect, and apt from
either the hamm (Debian 2.0) and slink (next version of Debian, 2.1).
Then use the 'apt' access method in dselect and put something like

deb http://ftp1.us.debian.org/debian hamm main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp1.us.debian.org/debian slink main contrib non-free

in your /etc/apt/sources.list.
Once you've got this working, keeping your system up to date is trivial
(well, once you get used to using dselect, anyway).

FWIW. Just to give an example of a simpler setup (in fstab):

#
/dev/hda1 /dosc vfat ;Win95+FAT32
/dev/hda2 noneswap ;Linux swap
partition
/dev/hda3 / ext2 ;Linux root
partition
/dev/hdb/cdrom iso9660;ATAPI (IDE)
CDROM

I mount my Win95 partition under the dir '/dosc'. You can choose
whatever name you want for this.

Since my CDROM is an ATAPI type, I access it as if it were a IDE hard
drive, i.e. /dev/hd?.

Did you also compile the modules for your custom kernel and install

The easiest way for me is to run dselect and do a search. Once on the
selection screen, type '/' and type in 'srgp'. That should take you to
the first package related to srgp. Use '\' to continue the search. The
combo of '/' and '\' will take you to every package with 'srgp' in its
name.

Does slab allow configuration of paths? For tcl8.0, init.tcl is in
/usr/lib/tcl8.0/init.tcl. Use 'dpkg -S init.tcl' to verify. I'm
assuming slab isn't provided as a deb package (couldn't find it in
dselect), so maybe slab needs to be recompiled with different
parameters, like looking for tcl stuff in usr/lib/tcl8.0/. If you
installed the debian version of tcl8.0, then I think the problem is with
slab.

If you have script on your system, you can make a "transcript" file of
all that goes to the screen during execution of any program. The default
file name is 'typescript' and you can name the file on the command line.

>From the man page for script:

Script makes a typescript of everything printed on your terminal.
It is useful for students who need a hardcopy record of an
interactive session as proof of an assignment, as the typescript
file can be printed out later with lpr(1).

I have also wished I had kept a record of what happens, particularly
when i upgraded from 1.3 to Hamm, when I got a bad Perl package due to
an ugly line and bad luck.

Hope this helps.

Any program that comes with Debian will come on the 2.0 cdrom already
built for libc6. The only problem is the stuff you've installed
yourself (i.e. whats in /usr/local). If you have the source just
recompile. For commercial, binary-only stuff you can install libc5 in
addition to libc6, so older progs can still be used. The libc5 package
in the 'oldlibs' section of the 2.0 distribution, has been modified so
it can coexist with libc6. So first upgrade your system, and then
install libc5 (from 'oldlibs').

I just wanted to add (vent about RedHat really), that RedHat does have
an easy way to upgrade. The RedHat network I maintain at school was just
upgraded to 5.1 from 5.0 and the guy had to download each package
individually and manually install them.

This makes me so much happier that I use Debian at home. God Bless

you don't really have a choice ... startx (and xinit) use .xinitrc, and

Well, I would try making a boot disk (the rescue disk should help you do
this) and booting it. Then do "dpkg -l" to list the stuff you've got
installed and pick some packages you want to get rid of. Then you can
"dpkg --purge " for each package you're uninstalling.

You can just delete the files by booting the rescue disk, mounting your
linux drive (probably on /mnt or /target) and then deleting them with
"rm", but this'll confuse dpkg if you delete the wrong stuff.

samba problems

1998-08-11 Thread Hamish Moffatt
I've been running sambades on a bo box which I upgraded to hamm this evening.
The box provides file & printing services to two Win95 boxes and an NT box,
hence the need for encryption.

On hamm, I created the smbpasswd file with mksmbpasswd and set passwords
for the users. Previously I had no "security =" set, which defaults to
share-level, I believe. The 95 boxes would remember their passwords
and reconnect shares without prompting (desirable), while the NT box
would need to be reminded once on login then would get everything else
ok (acceptable).

Now with samba in hamm, NT requires the password re-entered for every
share, and actually doesn't bother to prompt me when trying to use
the printer, and just says it can't print. So I changed
to "security = user", which makes NT happy as punch (never checks
my password with me now, because it is the same as my NT login password).

However, now 95 users have to supply their network password once,
which is undesirable. Once entered it seems happy enough, but I would
prefer that those users didn't have to enter a password.

Any suggestions for a solution?

thanks,
hamish

Dselect & script

1998-08-11 Thread Liam Healy
Try the "mountable" option in dselect (see package dpkg-mountable).
It keeps a transcript (in /var somewhere? check the docs). Also
don't be confused: each of the options (CD-ROM, mounted, mountable,
nfs, etc.) is like a separate program and only bears vague relation to
the location of the Debian packages and how they're to be accessed.
The mountable option can do mounted file systems, CD-ROMs, etc., and
in my opinion, it's a whole lot better because it does not go through
EVERY package every time you load something. Also, it loaded from
non-free and contrib directories off my hard disk, where the "mounted"
option would not.

why do you need ifconfig at all? For apache virtual domains you just need
virtual hosts and then all of the virtual domains can be cnames. Are your
virtual domains cnames or do they all have their own IP address? Apache
1.1.x needed ip-based virtual hosts, but 1.2.x and above don't. I use
qmail so I don't know what sendmail needs, sorry.

you are using "for i" but don't have $i in your script. So is this just
repeatedly telling ifconfig the same thing over and over? Why? What is
this supposed to do in BSDi? Or is this a typo? Just curious.

so "for i" is supposed to be $interface or $domain?

When are $interface and $domain getting set and to what? There's
obviously more to the script, I'd need to see that too. That's my best
guess so far.

If you don't mind I might want to take a look at your addvserver script.
I'm just starting to open up this service (virtual apache hosts) to
departments at work and it's currently a PITA.

this allows anyone logged in to the machine to do a ps -ef |grep adduser
(or ps auxwww) to see the user name and password. If you don't allow any
users to log in then this probably isn't too bad, but... I believe that
the adduser included with linux has an option for a broken password, which
will create the account with a disabled password. You can then set up a
simple expect script to set passwords in batches (if that's what you are
using this for). Beyond that I don't know of an easy way.

1998-08-11 Thread Hamish Moffatt
I just removed some of the old buzz/rex packages, base, timezone, bdflush.
I did it in dselect, and apt quite happily obliged.

After that, I had neither timezone NOR timezones installed (don't know why),
and removing base removed /usr/local (a symlink luckily, I've been bitten
before), most of /dev, etc. Not nice at all. Surely there is something
we can do to prevent this? I'm not unannoyed.

Also /dev/MAKEDEV has a group `tty', but running "/dev/MAKEDEV tty"
will only create /dev/tty, and not the rest (tty1..tty8). /dev/MAKEDEV
will not make /dev/console, and finally MAKEDEV is inconsistent;
asking for hd will create only hdaN and hdbN (not hdcN or hddN), while
creating sd will create all the way up to sdp.

HELP with Sound Card

1998-08-11 Thread XRDLAB
I am currently running Debian bo and wanted to compile sound support.

My sound card is Aztech Galaxy (claims to be compatible
with SoundBlaster 16, non pnp). The card works fine under dos with the
following settings:

SB 16io=0x220, irq=10, dma=1
MPU-401 io=0x330, irq=2

In the kernel (2.0.30) compile options I selected

   SoundBlaster support yes
   MPU-401 support yes
   /dev/dsp and /dev/audio yes
   MIDI interface support yes
   FM synthesizer support yes

under the Sound options (with the same adresses as under dos).

Evrything compiles neatly and I can even boot the system with the new
kernel. But sound module cannot be loaded. During boot up I get a
message

   /lib/modules/2.0.30/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol DMAbuf_init
   /lib/modules/2.0.30/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol audio_init

I could not get the answer for the above problem. Can somebody help me
on this matter?

Thanks,

xdm starts local server

1998-08-11 Thread Hamish Moffatt

no-run-xconsole
obey-nologin
allow-user-resources
allow-user-modmap
allow-user-xsession
allow-failsafe
start-xdm
no-xdm-start-server

However, xdm still starts a local server. Also, if I "startx" as a user,
it doesn't run the window manager (I have no ~/.xsession or ~/.xinitrc),
although it does if I login through xdm.

Suggestions?

And what about setting the password for those users in /etc/smbpasswd
to be blank? Does that work?

I have just checked smb.conf's man page and it looks like you have to
add:

null passwords=yes

to the global section of your smb.conf, as this parameter defaults to
"no".

IMAP via PPP

1998-08-11 Thread Michael Stenner
OK, I have a rather specific goal in mind when setting up my mail. My mail
arrives at work. I read and send mail from both work and home.

I know that I can (with pine, for example) manipulate and read mail from
home via IMAP. Unfortunately, this is slow and ends up re-downloading
mail messages or folder repeatedly.

I can also have mail downloaded to home and stored there.
Unfortunately, this "disconnects" the two work environments: if I read
and delete 300 mail messages (as debian-user easily provides) on one
system, I have to specifically (and personally) do the same to the other
system.

I would like a hybrid situation. I would like to mirror my work folders
(collections, to use pine's word) at home and have my home machine
"sycronize" the two systems on demand. That is, if I delete or move a
message on one system, have it preform the corresponding action on the
other.

Any ideas? Please cc to me personally (I subscribe to this list, but
I"m about 2000 messages behind... short vacations.. whew).

slow blinking light on ZIP when disk inserted

augh. I think my zip died. It gets found, but when I put a disk in, after
the series of fast blinks of the orange light, it begings a slow blink (about
1.5s cycle), which never stops. this happens whether plugged in or not.
however, it doesn't click, and i've tried this on a handful of disks, which

I always use for i .. -- bad habit. i should have been domain.

The passwords are all of the type login: webmasterfoo, password
fooretsambew. They are temporary passwords for internal use before we
give them to the customers. They then change them to whatever they
want. So it is not a security issue.

All domains have their own IPs and are configed in DNS. I honestly do
not know enough about this to discuss pro/con. I am fairly sure that
things we are doing are wrong. However it has been passed down thru the
sysadms who have worked here and would required re-doing many many
servers to change.

I am looking into this to find a "best" way. I believe that apache's
virtual domains is merely a piece of the pie.

I use this workaround:

Usually I have unstable commented out in sources.list. If I want to install
a single package from slink re-add it to sourcec.list, run "apt-get update

It's not perfect, since new packages from slink are listed as orphaned, but
I can live with it.

Its not so much that one is better than another, rather they do things
differently. xdm is run during system boot so that users never see a
command line, they get a graphical (X) login screen. startx is not run
during bootup, so you are taken to the console command line at the end
of the boot process. startx is usually explicity run by the user at
anytime they want to run X. They can then exit X and still be able to
run X at a later time by running startx again.

You're correct about dates and FTP. I used ftp to get the files to my local

Compiler Issues

1998-08-11 Thread Daniel Mashao
I know we are going thru' compiler changes etc. I am trying to install any
C++ compiler whether egcs or gcc. I installed all relevant files as far as
I know and as far as the dpkg did not complain about missing packages. But
when I compile a .cc file it gives the following output:

com5 % gcc ff.cc
In file included from ff.cc:1:
/usr/include/g++/iostream.h:91: parse error before `__extension__'
/usr/include/g++/iostream.h:208: parse error before `__extension__'

Anybody knows what is wrong.

sendmail is trying to do a dns lookup, and since it fails the mail sits in
the queue, until the queue is run (normally every 10 minutes by default on
my debian box) and it *can* complete the dns lookup.

you have a couple options. the best one, imho, would be to define a
smarthost and configure sendmail to work without dns. you can do this by
adding these two lines to your /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file and then running
/usr/sbin/sendmailconfig.

define(`SMART_HOST',`esmtp:upstream.mail.server.com')dnl
FEATURE(`nodns')dnl

instead of using the smarthost option you can also do it with mailertable
with a line like this in your sendmail.mc:

FEATURE(`mailertable',`hash -o /etc/mail/mailertable')dnl

and then making the first line of your mailertable file (don't forget to
run makemap!):

. esmtp:upstream.mail.server.com.

either will work fine.

i hope this helps,

adam.

If it's ps/2 type mouse You should probably use /dev/psaux (you might need to
compile support for this in kernel). /dev/mouse in normal circumstances is a
symlink to correct /dev entry (in my case /dev/mouse points to /dev/ttyS0)
issue:
cd /dev
rm mouse
ln -s psauxx mosue
 And try to boot X

 Good luck!

Mouse Fatality in X-Windows

1998-08-11 Thread Midgley John
Hi all

I'm just getting started with Linux, and I've had several goes at
installing the Debian 2.0 distribution. I'm getting tanatalisingly close
to a working X-Windows installation - much video card clicking and
flashing - but it objects to a line in the XF86Config file which says
'/dev/mouse'.

I have a Compaq Deskpro with a mini-din-type mouse socket; W95 reports
it as a PS/2 Port Mouse. So my question is - what should the line read?
Not ttySanything? I've read the README.mouse document, but that seems
more interested in protocols than devices; it keeps saying something
like '/dev/xxx, where xxx is the name of the device'. But what *is* the
name?

As an aside, if I retrieve the whole Debian thing as a .raw file, to an
NT machine, how can I write it to a CD? (I have a CD Writer, obviously!)

Many thanks

John Midgley

sendmail help please

1998-08-11 Thread Robert J. Alexander
I have the follwoing setup on my IBM Thinkpad running Debian slink:

when I am in the office I have sendmail configured to route all mail to
my permanently connected 9.87.2.151 machine.

when I am disconnected (with only my 127.0.0.1) I would only need to be
able to send mail to my local users (for instance the anacron package
requires this).

Now when i issue a "mail bob" command, where bob is my local user,
whether I am connected or not I do not get any mail in my local mailbox.

Thank you for any help .. here are some data which might help.

I am not running bind on my machine. Have an /etc/nsswitch which points

I do not know M$ Powerpoint but Wordperfect's Presentations has an export
facility that can create .eps files.

If you can export Powerpoint's figures to .tif, .gif, .pcx format or
something like that you can convert it using Imagemagick, xpaint or XV to
.eps or .ps -files.

I struggled with that so much. I finally succeeded with emacs19. Notice
what it does to your .emacs file. You should remove it as you experiment
with installing emacs20.

Sorry this is not so much of a help but I just wanted you to know that you

The information in the file /etc/fstab (or something) has mounting
information about the disk drives/partitions. Normally one would mount
different partitions as standard directories in the standard file system.
For example, / (the root directory) might be on hda6 (last partition on
the 1st drive, perhaps d: in dos parlance). hdb1 might be mounted as /usr,
hdb2 might be /var or whatever. hda1 might hold windows95 and be mounted
as /win95 or something. How you actually organise all this (especially as
you seem to have lots of harddrives) is beyond me, although others may
give you considerations. It's OK (although not ideal) to have the entire
thing on one partition, it's probably easier this way at least at first.
You'll want lots of room for /usr though, that's where all the program
files go.

My system has two harddrives, and the arrangement looks something like:

device size filesystem mount point contents
hda1 (400Mb)'vfat'/win95win95, oddly enough
hda5 (~32Mb) linux swapN/A swap space/virtual memory
hda6 (~370Mb) ext2/ /, /home/ajt (my user directory)
and everything that's not
elsewhere
hdb1 (100Mb)ext2 this ones's going to be / when I clean out hda
hdb2 (32Mb) linux swap N/A swap space
hdb3 (100Mb)ext2/varstuff that gets changed by
programs often
hdb4 (>1000Mb) ext2/usrprograms/applications etc.

This probably isn't ideal, either.

Unix accesses devices as files, that's what the /dev/fd0 was in my mount
example. here are the normal device files for the devices you wanted

/dev/fd0

> where would the cdrom be, and where would the actual os be stored, like what
> are the most common directories...

cdrom depends on the make of your cdrom, mine's /dev/sbpcd1 (sound
blaster). I created a directory /cdrom and mount it there.

I've already covered some of the directories in my mounting example, but
here are the other usual ones:

/bin (system binaries, things like ls etc)
/home (All the user directories are subdirectories of /home)
/root (except for the superuser who resides here)
/etc ( configuration files)
/usr (lots of stuff, including /usr/sbin (administration programs)
/usr/bin (application programs)
/usr/doc (documentation)
/var (stuff that changes often, like news spools/ mail etc. )

It's a bit daunting, but it has a certain warped logic and arcane elegance
to it.

Thanks Harold, that makes sense, I will try it at work. Why do I need
the eth0:X part? Why does linux use a :? notation? I have not seen
that on either Suns or BSDi (my other two unices).

I use:

do

route add -host ${ALIAS} dev eth0:${i}
