IMPS/2 problems after kernel 2.4.1 update
Hi there, I'm having a problem with my Microsoft Intellimouse (an intellimouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel that uses the ps/2 interface) since going from a 2.2.x kernel to 2.4.1. The way i have setup (and how everything worked perfectly before this upgrade) was that gpm was set to read from /dev/psaux using the imps2 protocol. It then repeats this to /dev/gpmdata which i then have /dev/mouse linked to. My XF86Config-4 is setup so that it knows the mouse is at /dev/mouse, and uses the imPS/2 protocol. I also have a line for the Zaxis stuff to get the scroll wheel to act like buttons 4 and 5 in X so that the wheel works. Anyway, all this is well and good because it was this exact setup that worked before the new kernel. Anyway, since upgrading the kernel, gpm no longer works on /dev/psaux with the imps2 protocol (hence, X doesn't work either...). The mouse just goes all crazy moving all over the place, and pushing random buttons and what not. So i set gpm and X to use the regular ps/2 protocol, and everything was fine, however i get no third button or scroll wheel anymore, which sucks. Just in case this was just a gpm problem, i tried having X read directly from /dev/psaux using the IMPS/2 protocol, but unfortunately got the same bad result. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem here? It had to have been something i configured wrong in the kernel...however i don't know what, since it just made the IMPS/2 stuff not work, while the regular PS/2 still works...very strange. Any ideas, or tips? thanks, dave

What's wrong with just helping your friends to use Windows? Windows has gui config tools, good for handholding with beginners, and it has good application and games support. Realise that computers are still computers. It's the task, not the method by which the task is done. What is it about Linux that inspires such zealotry? Okay. Now I stop playing devil's advocate. Linux zealots exist because of the belief that Linux is much better than other operating systems (ie Windows). They exist because of the urge to release other people from the grip of Microsoft, just as they themselves have been released. They exist because of their wish for others to experience the enlightenment (not the wm), the feelings of freedom and the endless possibilities that an open system offers, that they themselves have experienced. Debian zealots are no different. They perceive that they have found a better Linux - a Linux higher still than other Linuces. A Linux that they wish other users to try, in the hope that they too will have a similar experience. What's wrong with that?

When the Wake-Up on LAN is enabled, a wake up event, like using the PCnet Magic Packet utility will awaken a system which has been powered down. Re: Weird platform and Debian (changed), any experiences?
A small revision, the frst was in HTML format... sorry for that Hi, I just set up a linux firewall at home, but I'm a little confused about its type of platform. It's a NexGen Nx586, I tried to install RedHat first (I had experience using that as a firewall on some 'normal' machine)but it just kicked out the installation-procedure after the first boot. Next I tried Mandrake and Suse, both without any luck. I checked the hardware HOWTO and didn't read anything about support to this platform, nor anything negative about it. I found some (very few!) resources, mainly questions as well, about the Nx586. The only thing that may be interesting to mention is that Linux recognizes the platform as a 386 machine. The situation now is as follows: I installed debian, very minimal installation, and set up ipchains/ipmasq/portfw for my internal network. Debian does run but there are mainly two errors which regularly occur. The first is just a complete lock up of the firewall, with a lot of nasty dumps. The second is a litle more weird. It doesn't lock up (traffic between the internal network and the internet is possible, in both directions) but I can't login in any way. I first discovered the problems trying to login using SSH from work (or whatever location), it disconnected me immediately without any further response. When I tried to login onto the firewall locally it directly came up with a message like: 'Error in /sbin/login', and a library-file is mentioned (will look it up if it appears again). A similar thing occurs when trying to shutdown the machine. If I press ctrl-alt-del at the same time it tries to 'init' but then gives an error also. (means I have to reboot it manually, and everything seems to work fine again, until the same thing happens) Any help would be appreciated, but mainly I'm interested if people have experiences with this combination of hardware/OS, and if anyone has some tips on making this setup a bit more stable, though I can understand people saying that I should buy a 486 for a few bucks ;) Thanks, Tijl

Actually, given XFree86's new found resilience against font servers dying (this used to be a DoS in older XFree86 releases), you can do more: I have a font server serving all fonts as the first entry in the font path, and the Xserver as a backup serving the same fonts later in the font path. If the font server dies, the Xserver takes over the rendering. -- "One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. One disk to bring them all and in the darkness grind them. There is a program called patch for automatically applying diff files to an original file (often referred to as .orig). you may find the following works: patch -p0 filename.diff For people have distributed diffs designed for patch as .patch files rather than .diff files, so it is possible your .diff file specifically does not work with patch, or is very old. Anyway, you should be able to get there eventually, just fiddle the arguments a little. Oh, you have to have the original (unmodified) file that you apply the patch to, the .diff only contains the differences to the original. The drivers for earlier chips (such as Trio variants) have been ported from 3.3.6 yet. I checked your XFree86 log, and it's telling me that it's treating your card as a generic VGA card, hence the 64K of RAM and 320x240 pixel screen. I'm pretty certain this is because your chipset isn't supported in 4.0.2. However, you can still install and use 3.3.6 X servers (apt-get install xserver-svga), though I think this takes some fiddling. Thanks Leigh
No controlling TTY
This has been bugging me for a while. I had some time today, but still can't figure it out. When I use ssh or scp from a shell I have no problems at all, but when I use xemacs M-! shell command to move a file, it dies on me with: You have no controlling tty. Cannot read passphrase. lost connection It dies whether I am using xemacs in X or a virtual terminal. It used to work, it used to pop-up w/ x11-ssh-askpass and that would be that. Now it has stopped. I checked the archives here and the main theme seems to be making sure that X11Forwarding is on in the server, and that ForwardX11 is on in the client. These are on. Any help would be appreciated. reportbug and the BTS
(I wouldn't normally cross-post like this, but it's probably important for people running testing who are not developers. Followup to -devel, s'il vous plait. No cc to me necessary.) A recent change in the BTS has confused reportbug (and querybts) into thinking that there are no outstanding bug reports for any package. A new version, 1.14, is in incoming and will fix the problem. It should be installed in sid tomorrow and testing by Monday or Tuesday I think (it's a high urgency release). Basically, the CGI scripts moved from cgi.debian.org to bugs.debian.org without any sort of redirect from the server. wget http://incoming.debian.org/reportbug_1.14_all.deb will grab the new version from incoming. Verify the package if you're paranoid; the md5sum is 87e66d8830bbf9263ba9a6bad184a483 and length is 51974 bytes. The version in stable (0.54) is unaffected, as it did not use the CGI scripts for bug queries to generate its reports. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Or do I need to thrash some exotic dpkg command to flush my database, rebuild it, and start over from scratch? Note that some mirrors I've tried work like the de mirror and files listed as being at the site actually are, and other mirrors act like the us mirror where files listed as available in some listing file are not found when a GET is attempted. (HELP!) Thanks, Heitzso

I buy all my machines from ASL. http://www.aslab.com/ well, all but my laptop which was cheap. :) ASL's got very nice machines and great service (as in it's trivial to order... dunno what happens when they break since none of 'em have broken :)). If you want a highquality laptop, I'd look at ASL. (My ASL machines are 'gimli', 'narvi', 'bifur', 'bofur' and 'nori'. Next one will be bombur, I think, but I'm waiting for dual K7's to actually exist.) (And, no, I don't get anything from ASL, though I have a couple T-shirts and a coffee mug from them as well as the above machines, all running Debian. :)) -- CueCat decoder .signature by Larry Wall: #!/usr/bin/perl -n printf "Serial: %s Type: %s Code: %s\n", map { tr/a-zA-Z0-9+-/ -_/; $_ = unpack 'u', chr(32 + length()*3/4) . $_; s/\0+$//; $_ ^= "C" x length; } /\.([^.]+)/g;

RPC call returned error 111
This looks like the problem that I had. This issue came up on debian-user a few days ago. Check the archives for Feb. 10 -- 12. The solution is to install net-tools_1.58-2_i386.deb. Debian startup scripts...
Hello Tony, Please excuse the intrusion, but I came across your name while skimming through a Debian listserv.. I am in the process of setting a up a Debian 2.2 (Potato) on a PIA box. I was able to successfully ping the outside world via my firewall, and was also able to use a text browser (lynx) to navigate the web. However, I can't seem to be able to browse using Netscape. So as a remedy, I manually inserted some pertinent info in /etc/init.d/network. I also setup /etc/modules to include an alias for my NIC driver(dmfe.o). The idea is to have the kernel load the correct module for the NIC. After restarting 'inetd' and recognizing that I still couldn't see the outside world using Netscape, I decided to reboot. Unfortunately, the kernel can't find any of the modules listed in /etc/modules. Hence, the system won't complete the start up sequence.. Additonally, the machine doesn't have a floppy drive. Is there anyway that I can boot into single user mode and fix the problem? Are there some hot-keys that I can employ? I have an old Debian 2.0 CD that I could use as a boot kernel. I suspect that one of the start up scripts has bogus info in it. Thanks in advance... -- Alfred

stable(?) and unstable ssh package(s?) broken
setup: unstable debian on athlon run: apt-get install ssh yields 4 segementation faults during ssh-keygen runs, so server doesn't come up. I also tried pointing to stable sources and getting current stable ssh w apt-get install ssh and got the same segmentation crash errors so I cannot actually say that the problem is in ssh -- it may be in an unstable library used by ssh, or, actually, used by ssh-keygen. I've done repeated: apt-get update apt-get upgrade and apt-get remove ssh apt-get install ssh sequences trying to get past this. I've also tried removing and reinstalling openssl package in case it was responsible for the problem. (HELP!) Thanks, Heitzso [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: upgrade to a lib in testing
To quote "Robin Rowe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, # Hi. I don't seem to have it right. I get an error on 'apt-get install # libsdl1.1-dev': # # Reading Package Lists... # Building Dependency Tree... # E: Couldn't find package libsdl1.1-dev Don't read the other reply ... Use deb-src, trust me. Here's what you do; 1) Temporary add a deb-src entry pointing to testing. You've done this already. 2) As root, do 'apt-get -b source libsdl1.1'. That'll build libsdl1.1 .debs. 3) As root, do 'dpkg -i <.debs>', where <.debs> are the names of the .deb files generated by 'apt-get -b source'.. If you just add a 'deb' line pointing to testing, and then 'apt-get install something' from it, you're going to run into big problems, trust me.
