fuentes netscape
He desinstalado el navigator-smotif-476, netscape-base, etc. y vuelta a instalar y sigue igual.
Salu2! -- Oscar Renalias - [EMAIL PROTECTED] House music is a state of mind.

Hi, I recently had to upgrade many packages on my system to the unstable Woody distribution, which included upgrading to X 4.0, which -- not surprisingly -- broke scads of things, most of which are now fixed. The one continuing annoyance is that xbanner is no longer doing anything! I suspect this has to do with relocating the config files or possibly with the xdm configuration files themselves. I know there were changes in the organization of the config files (for X). I note that xbanner was not upgraded to a new upstream version going to Woody (both Potato and Woody use v1.31), although the Woody version is a later package release. I assume this means that xbanner is expected to continue working -- but it appears that it doesn't. At least not without modification or re-configuration. Has anyone else noticed this? And what exactly do I have to do to recover my xbanner setup? Any help would be appreciated -- I really liked my old login screen! And it's so much harder to intimidate Windows users this way. ;) -- Terry Hancock [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Someone suggests set http_proxy and ftp_proxy in /etc/environment, but that seems to be not working. In a word, I cannot find any hostname in a terminal, and apt-get won't work for me. how do you do dns on other machines? All I do was to manually download all the packages required by dependency and ran `dpkg -i foo.deb baz.deb' and all troubles came as a result. which packages? maybe it would of been better to download the ISOs or buy pre made cds from some company. I tried to upgrade perl5.6, xfree86-4, mozilla-0.8.1, and netscape-4.76, all gave me frustrating experience. any particular reason you need perl 5.6 and xfree86 4? perl 5.6 is not part of debian stable(for good reason if you've read the archives it is a source of problems from time to time in unstable). same for xfree86 4, it is not stable yet so it is not in the sable distribution(and last i tried to find 3rd party .debs for it i could not..). same for mozilla 0.8.1. so basically anything thats not part of the system you should not be suprised if there are problems. in general they may not be, but both xfree86 4 and perl 5.6 are major system components and if they are even slightly broken it can(as you've seen) cause major problems. I'm not so lucky with perl5.6, because of circular dependency between perl and debconf. I have to compile perl5.6.1 myself and install it to /usr/local. When I attempted to upgrade mozilla-M18_3 to mozilla-0.8.1 and failed, I made another attempt to install netscape-4.76 and found that failed as well. Now the system was left with some libraries in a mess. i use netscape 4.76 everyday, i install it via 'apt-get install communicator'. you must have the non-free listing in your sources.list provided you can use apt. or maybe you can get an ISO(i dont think they are official) of a non-free cd, and/or get a pre made cd of the non-us archive, if your network gateway isn't linux friendly. I really hate the circular dependency in Debian packages. That's really frustrating and time-consuming and can render the system in disorder. I hate to say it but the problems your having were caused by you wanting to use knowingly unstable program versions. you probably should of asked the list before attempting what you did as some people may of been able to warn you ahead of time what you were getting into. Has anybody run into the same problem? never. i only run the stable version of debian on the couple dozen machines i run linux on. never have ever touched the testing and/or unstable distributions(even on testing systems) the closest i have come is a couple of times i have built packages from unstable from source to install on potato(stable). and have not encountered any problems(provided the package compiled in the first place). the major benefit with debian i see is things are very stable, and yes if you stick with the stable distribution you get left behind when the latest and greatest stuff comes out. i prefer to wait till it goes through the testing phases and is declared stable before starting to use it. The main reason i ditched win32 in favor of linux/unix is because i was sick of software problems win32 gave me. using testing/unstable gives me those same problems even if they are less frequent or easier to solve, i don't wan't problems at all, so i stick to stable. Is there a good way to avoid this? don't use unstable packages: xfree86 4.x perl 5.6.x mozilla 0.8.x maybe it would be a good idea to somehow verify the packages being installed are from debian, and if they are not, or if they are not from the stable branch have apt or dpkg spit out a big warning(something along the lines of when you try to remove a vital system package and apt forces you to type something like Yes i know this is bad) so people know what they are getting into . nate debian user since debian 2.0 unix/linux user since 1994 -- ::: ICQ: 75132336 http://www.aphroland.org/ http://www.linuxpowered.net/ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have compiled a copy of the latest LILO for Potato. It is available on http://www.coker.com.au/lilo/ . There is no Packages file as I don't plan to update this enough to make it necessary to use apt for it. This package is for people who use Potato but who have newer SCSI controllers, a ReiserFS root file system, or any other setup for which the Potato version of LILO doesn't work. I have no plans for submitting this version for a Potato update. Also this package has the latest debconf code. X memory problem
Hello, I've got some weird problem, I don't seem to find a solution for. I'll try to situate it and explain the things I've done to try and find out what the problem might have been. A couple weeks ago, I changed from SuSE (which I liked btw) to Debian. I especially wanted to do this to familiarise myself better with the distribution I'm putting on a couple of server and the ease of maintenance. In retrospect, I did (unfortunately) many changes at the same time, which makes it hard for my to identify the exact cause of my problem. The changes to my system are: 1. Change from SuSE 7.0 to Debian 2.2r2 2. Change from 128 Mb to 512 Mb (2x 128 Mb pc100 and 1x 256 Mb pc133) The problem: When I am starting my X server with the nvidia module (not nv, there I have no problem), I get a green rectangle on my screen. It covers everything at that place except my mouse cursor. I log in (KDE 2.1.1) and start aviplay (0.53.5) with some movie. The window swallows the rectangle and when I stop the player, the rectangle is gone. To my experience, I have l lower FPS rate in Quake3 and I am no longer able to play avi (DiVX ;-) ) movies anymore using aviplay (I get enormous frame losses). This is possible though with the nv module (but no Quake3 of course). The rectangle seems to be the size of the last avi I played (no matter if it was in Winblows or in Linux). The things I have tried to solve/identify the problem: 1. I changed the gfx card (Diamond Viper 770) to a simular one (ASUS 3800). The first time I booted, I didn't get the green rectangle, the second time I booted with the new gfx card, I got it again. So I switched back to the original card (Diamond Viper 770, TNT2 Ultra). 2. I removed the new memory (1x 128 Mb pc100 and 1x 256 Mb pc133), reducing it back to the original 128 Mb. The rectangle never disappeared. I started switching the DIMMs, with no result. 3. I recompiled the kernel and the NVidia modules; no result. 4. I reinstalled Debian 2.2r2 from scratch. The first time I started my X, there it was again, ... 5. I downloaded the X 4.0.2 and the X 4.0.3 from ftp.xfree.org and used these two instead of the debian packages. no result, still the rectangle. The conclusions I can draw from this is: 1. It cannot be some obvious software problem. Even if I leave my pc down for a couple of days, I get the rectangle on booting. 2. It's not related to the GFX card: changing the gfx card didn't do anythgin. 3. It's apparently nothing with memory, I switched the DIMMs The only constant I see here, is the switch from SuSE to Debian (which I don't see as the problem of course(!!!)). However, I don't like to reinstall SuSE, just to eliminate the last factor in this equation. I've been posting on a couple of ng's (perhaps you've seen them), but no-one seems to have a clue what might be going on there. I for one don't seem to find anything either. I think it must have something to do with the nvidia driver. This is in two parts actually: either there is a bug in the software that only happens in a very limited number of cases (distribution/hardware), I and just happened to have this, OR the nvidia module uses hardware features the nv module doesn't use (hence no problem there). The weird thing is that the size of the windows seems to be saved somewhere in HW, since I get it after a long power down AND if I start an avi in Windoos, it has it's effects in Linux. I also get the rectangle in consele if I logout of X!!! I really hope that someone has any idea or even a suggestion what's going on here. I read the mailing lists (digest version), but I would like a cc to my address. some info: P III 550 Diamond Viper 770 Ultra 512 Mb RAM (2x 128 Mb pc100 and 1x 256 Mb pc133) XFree86 4.0.3 (not debian) SDL 1.2.0 avifile 0.53.5 KDE 2.1.1 (but I also have it in the XDM login screen or with startx, so this is not a problem). GUI Email program
Hi there, I am looking for suggestions of a GUI email program (sorry i just like them better) Anyway...I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Netscape doesn't seem to be cutting it very well for me. I tried evolution, but I always ran into problems trying to compile the tarballs, it would tell me this dependency wasn't met, and that this version wasn't up to date enough even though I pulled it off of Ximian's site. And if I apt-get'ed something, it wouldn't be the most recent and things were trown into other places than where the ./configure script was looking, so it would tell me I have wrong versions. So the jist of it. Can anyone tell me a good reliable, with nice features, GUI email program? Thanks Rob

Re: Tutorial for kernel compiling the Debian way, RFC
Hi, I must say, it is a very exhaustive document, but I think detailed enough for a newbie, BUT: everything you describe, is done as root. This is not needed, and certainly for newbies somewhat dangerous. I would do the following: As root: - install kernel source with apt - addgroup useraccount src (this gives you read and write permissions in /usr/src) - LET THE USER LOG IN AGAIN - OTHERWISE HE IS NOT ADDED TO THE GROUP (you can check this with the command 'groups'). Then as useraccount: - unpack to /usr/src - link linux to kernel-source-... - do everything you need to do to compile the kernel - compile it Then as root: - install the newly compiled kernel with dpkg -i kernel. This is also better when you want to use 'make xconfig'. I have heard that using X as root is not so wise, now you can be an ordinary user. Perhaps you have mentioned it somewhere, but it may be worthy noting that you can compile kernels on a fast machine for a slower machine (with the correct config files), copy the .deb file and install the package on the slower machine. Jumping in here with a longshot (especially considering I only got 3 hrs sleep last night - treat this advice accordingly) With the fact that it locks when doing C-M-F1 (and, I'm assuming, for any other F-key), I wonder if it's a problem with X switching to the framebuffer (if you're using a fb console...) I know mine takes about a 1/2 second to a second to resync to the console (Both running @ 1024x768, FB is vesa, X is 4.0.2 ati) While you're in the locked condition, is the terminal active (even though you can't see anything)? Try logging in blind and touching a file... C-M-F1 usernameenter passwordenter touch XYZZYenter ...then switching back to X (C-M-F7) and seeing if the file is there... If it is, it's obviously a conflict between X and whatever console you're using -- if it's a framebuffer, try using the normal one (vga=normal in lilo.conf) and see if that helps. If you're using the normal one...I dunno. If you DON'T start X (IE: you don't go through x/k/gdm) can you switch terminals? If not, I don't think it's GNOME...might start looking into the console-* packages to see if there's anything amiss. -b3 On Mon, Apr 23, 2001 at 09:01:34AM +0100, Etienne Grossmann wrote: According to 'xev', my 'alt' is 'Alt_L', which I would say is ok. Re: where to find ttmkfdir?
Here's what I do when I want new True Type fonts : 1. Download TrueType font 2. Convert all font file names to lowercase (important) 3. Copy .ttf file in dans /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType 4. Generate fonts.dir : mkttfdir -e (Debian package utils/fttools) 5. Re-start font server : /etc/init.d/xfs restart Works fine... Dominique

Someone suggests set http_proxy and ftp_proxy in /etc/environment, but that seems to be not working. In a word, I cannot find any hostname in a terminal, and apt-get won't work for me. All I do was to manually download all the packages required by dependency and ran `dpkg -i foo.deb baz.deb' and all troubles came as a result. I tried to upgrade perl5.6, xfree86-4, mozilla-0.8.1, and netscape-4.76, all gave me frustrating experience. Luckily, I worked around the problem of updating xfree86-4 by reinstall the Debian/GNU system without packages that might conflict with xfree86-4. Yes, that's quite expensive. I really hate the circular dependency in Debian packages. That's really frustrating and time-consuming and can render the system in disorder. Now, imagine what would happen if there weren't such dependencies. You could just try to upgrade random packages, as you did, and the system would tell you it had all worked but would then break later ... not good. I'm sure there are distributions with incomplete dependencies if that's really what you want. Oh, by the way, if two packages depend on each other, you can always just install them both on the same dpkg command line: 'dpkg -i perl.deb debconf.deb', or whatever. You mention this yourself above, so I'm not quite sure why you couldn't use this to get around the perl/debconf problems. The recent upgrades I've performed have all worked fine there. Has anybody run into the same problem? Is there a good way to avoid this? If you can't get working network access, buy a CD and upgrade from that. There are plenty of people selling them quite cheaply (see http://www.debian.org/distrib/vendors). -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Learning grub - was: RE: rant grub \rant
Do a search for grub under the Linux section on developerWorks. It's a tutorial that you'll have to register for. Just a update. I went to www.ibm.com and did a top level search for grub. The top entries were all pointers to the tutorial. None required me to register. Interesting that they did take me to www.cn.ibm.com. Why it was tucked under the Chinese is interesting but not important. Armed with the tutorial I got grub going. The version of grub that came from apt-get install grub was 0.5.93. The tutorial used 0.5.96.1. This version had a command that wasn't in 0.5.93, to wit: setup which writes the MBR of the selected disk. So did apt-get remove grub; downloaded the 0.5.96.1 tarball and was off and running. Everything worked as advertised - I think. I have to do a few more boots from the floppy and play some games. The first two boots created a kernel panic. Perhaps I only *thought* I had typed in everything correctly. The third try got me to GUI login, but something was funny because there were a whole bunch of mapping problems spewed out. Between the third and fourth try I added menu.lst to the floppy. That was nice. What was nicer was that I got what appeared to be a clean boot. Still need to do some more due diligence with respect to (1) what a kernel uses from /boot during boot, (2) lilo in general and (3) grub in general. For example. There are all these files in a /boot section. Which are needed by lilo and which are needed by the kernel, etc? On the surface, it seems that grub is more flexible than lilo in terms of disparate distros on different partitions. -rick
APM doesn't work
Hello, Since the newer kernels, APM support stopped working (the system freezes). However, I noticed that it does work when the kernel isn't booted yet, in the grub menu. Is there any way I can tell the kernel to stay away from the APM support? So I'd lose all cool things like ejecting PCMCIA cards before going into sleep mode, but at least it'd work again... -- Arnout Engelen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Did you know... that the gzipped DeCSS algorithm is rumoured to be the first known illegal prime number?

I suspect restarting syslogd without restarting klogd AFTER syslogd finishes reloading causes this, but I haven't tested. ipchains can't be at fault, it logs to the kernel ringbuffer. Updating PAM also causes this kind of crap. I don't know why, though. -- One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. One disk to bring them all and in the darkness grind them. Re: AVI player?
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/avifile-player.html This player can play some avi files. What makes this player different is that it using win32 dlls to decode the streams, making it in theory able to play any format that windows can including DivX;). However the only down side is that since it uses wine to read the dlls it need a higher end processor, a 450MHz works fine for most DivX;). james On Mon, 23 Apr 2001 10:16:41 Andrzej Swedrzynski wrote: Hello!
